    After using the Dual 1019 for several hours, it developed a slight noise while turning the platter. I pulled it back apart and lubricated the motor and idler wheel. It's running nice and quiet now even after a few weeks of heavy use.

    I've never seen a 78 played on one of the Duals before. Man, it sure slams that tonearm around!

    It sure does, pretty comical. You should see it play a 16 RPM record. It's like watching paint dry.

    Unusual plinth, never seen one before. Have Dual 1019, 1229 & 1224. Like the 1019 most, smallish but heavy duty beast.

    I think they were sold with a few different bases. I love the 1019. I also have three Dual 1237's from the late 70's.

    I was bidding on one of these on ebay and lost. It went for way over $200, which surprised me. Anyway, I like how you have the turntable elevated above the amp with the air space in between for ventilation. I've seen so many videos where they put the table right on top with no space so the amp probably gets hot enough to fry and egg.

    Wow, I didn't realize that they were going for that much. I feel very fortunate for getting mine for free. I love my Dual 1019. I play it every day. I have 3 Dual 1237s that have better specs that I don't use that much.

    mguess - Hello I have a 1019 and I was wanting to get the needles you got and was wanting to be a able to switch them out quickly. Can you tell me the exact model I need or does any new ortofon needle fit on the 1019 head-shell? Sorry Im a novice.

    Hi Yaggy One. The Dual 1019 headshell will accept most of the modern cartridges including the Ortofon 2M Red the I used. I also bought a 3D printed replacement headshell and a Ortofon 2M 78 cartridge to play my old 78 rpm shellac records.

    That is indeed the original cover as we had one in our 1019 bought in 1967. very excellent you can play records after cleaning and put the cover down with no need to worry about dust alighting on the turntable as it plays. From 1965-1970 this was just about the best hifi turntable that was widely available, there are even 33 and 45rpm changer spindles available - it's a DOES EVERYTHING turntble! The dust cover is the perfect size to hold a few albums when turned upside down and placed next to the turntable. Dual Turntables + Shure Cartridges = Marriages made in Heaven. One thing you might consider doing is to paint the tonearm headshell top, it's pretty ratty! :-)

    I have a 1229q, and it has started making the same sound that yours does here. Could you share a bit about how you fixed the problem? Did you use sewing machine oil, a syringe, and rubber rejuvinator? Does the motor need to be unassembled to oil it?

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    3 жыл бұрын

    You do need to disassemble the motor to properly lubricate it. I use two different types of oil interchangeably. The one that you saw me using in the video was 0-20 Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil in a needle bottle. (cheap). I also use 3in1 oil. I used rubber rejuvenation on the idler wheel and oiled the bearing . 12voltvids has an excellent restoration video on the Dual 1229. Here is a link. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZ1_xKmRg5rPmrA.html Good luck with your turntable.

    @@mguess I appreciate your video and this reply. I've never operated on a turntable, and I have a bit more confidence now. I hear a whirring in your video, which I think is from the turntable. Was it the motor bearing that was causing this noise?

  • @mguess

    @@inthezone4123 not sure what the sound was. The motor didn't start making noise until a few weeks after I made the video.

    When playing a 78 record, a special stylus is needed. Shure made a 78 that would fit into their cartridge. It was much bigger that the regular Hi-Fi needles. A 78 played with a regular needle sounds very bad. Mostly static.

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    I agree. When playing 78's I use an Ortofon 2M 78 cartridge. The stylus is designed for the 78 groove size

    @@redbishop71 I have the owners manual and the service manual for the Dual 1019 in PDF format. I can email them to you if you give me your email address. The old Dual turntables are purely mechanical. The only thing electrical is the motor and cartridge wiring. Generally automatic changer issues of all kinds are corrected by cleaning and re-lubricating the mechanism.

    The owners manual and service manual for the Dual 1019 are available for free download on the vintageshifi web site. You should be able to find it with a Google search. Let me know if you have trouble finding them and I'll email them to you. You should be able to find someone in the SoCal area that works on vintage audio stuff.

    Hey this is a shot in the dark, but I have a Dual 1019 that I inherited from my late grandfather that needs servicing. It likely needs a new motor, per a repair tech. The motor only engages a small percentage of the time, but we did have it playing a record for a brief period. It probably needs lubrication too. My local repair shops in the Sacramento, CA area rough quoted me $500 and a wait time of 6 months which I thought was kind of insane. I realize that shipping these things is pretty risky. I was wondering - and here's the shot in the dark - I have a local repair tech who'd be willing to repair it himself but doesn't know where to source the new motor. Do you think you might be able to either sell me a new motor so I can have him fix it, or advise me where to find one? I really want to get this turntable playing again. My grandfather passed earlier this year, and this turntable served as the workhorse in the living room for our very musical family from the 60s through the 90s. It would mean the world to me and my dad if I can get it working again. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

    Word to the wise: once you've cleaned and renewed the idler tire. do not touch the edge with your fingers. Any finger oil can create a slick spot.

    Thanks for the tip. I usually try not to touch the rubber renew do to its toxicity. I did eventually replace the idler wheel with a new unit because I was having trouble adjusting the speed. Working perfectly now.
