    My mom had a 1964 Corvair on which the 2 peed auto transmission failed....she took it back to the dealer for repair and surprised hell out of me (and Dad too) by deciding to trade it in on a 1965 red Monza convertible (4 speed manual with the 140 hp engine) which was on the showroom floor. I got to use it a lot....what a fun car....and a great Mom too........Thanks for showing this restoration.....brought back many memories............

    Nice job. I restored my 65 17 years ago i used the front suspension from a fiero gt and grafted it my corvair it worked awsome.

    I forgot to mention... this was supposed to be a one year project. Almost 6 years later it was completed. I did everything but the paint and installing the top.

    Fuck me, man, I live in South Australia & I dug up an original Fisher bodied (Detroit Built) '67 GTO Pontiac- full ram air IV optioned 700+ bro after a crazy cam & oval port NASCAR heads($6000ea), Detroit locker rear, 411:1 ($4000)! Heavily strengthened trail shaft from SS Chevelle. Full comp trick turbo 400 & 9"rather than 11", 2600rpm stall converter. This 1777Kg animal, with open exhaust (HM stainless oval port extractors)& M50x15 Indy profile M/T's down to 8-10lbs after a decent tyre warming burn in 1st, quick back track & stage in to run a passenger wheel standing holshot blast that didn't even reach third gear till I was almost across the line! 11.2 @ 139.7 mph. I've never had such a heavy but fuck'n incredibly fast acceleration out of a car you would never in a million years think would wheel stand & pull 11 sec. It tried to pull the front up again changing into 2nd! I was clued in by a few in the know that Pontiac are renound for their bullet proof bottom ends. And it's true! Built like a 4 bolt, cross drilled Kenworth main caps & 1/2" hss big end bolts, all new Vandervelle blue, UHT full throttle bearing kit after melting numbers 1,2,3&4 big ends from having my front end up on a gutter & fuckwit me run my new wild cam in under full load & through all three gears! Pegged the Speedo back to 0! Pulling 7800rpm! For a solid 3 minutes! Both tyres gone, after I shut her down changed the run in tyres, then almost cried when I started her up. It sounded like a top fueler with a fucking heart breaking knock that I had to nurse home over 2500 but under 3000! Coz I swear out was just about to let go. But that mother fucker of a bottom end got me 16 miles into the relatively safe haven of my garage. Where I could really sit & ponder what to do next. Obvious! Pull her out & check everything like how I bent the front node, between the front main bearing cap & the pulley almost 10°!!! Lucky it's made of crazy high carbon steel coz otherwise I could've thrown it in the shithouse! Lichfield engineering are the magicians who got it perfect o mundo. After another 3 months in the shed waiting for bits & pieces from the states, she came back together with a vengeance! I swear it was up a couple of horsepower, like about 50! I didn't get to blast it down the 1/4 after that coz the gasket kit I fitted was brilliant, don't get me wrong, but I could've shot myself for making the biggest blunder of my previously untarnished mechanical work (self taught) watching & asking questions. Well, I put the wrong intake gaskets in & subsequently blocked off the heat risers!!! 780-800hp engines don't last long of they can't disperse heat, quickly, & lots of it! Not even giving the car a chance to show me the huge error I'd made, I thought I'd take my girlfriend for a high speed "run in" drive to Pt. Pirie. Yeah ssso, got as far as red hill. Car's boiling it's arse out. Pulled over tried to shut her down, no deal! Bonnet up! Extractors bright orange! Heads starting to get a red hue to them! I yelled to my girl get out & run! She was in shock. I dragged her out, . Jumped back under the bonnet, confused, pulled off all the plug leads, coil lead battery leads! It was fuck'n dieseling on it's own!!!! I thought my pride & joy was about to explode & blow itself into a million pieces. But always having had that coolness under intense pressure made me get back in to this time bomb, standing on the brake pedal, full had brake engaged, I put her into reverse, 1st, rev, drive, rev, drive, then finally it stopped revving higher & higher & it shut down after I'd completely choked the two double pumpers with towels, & eventually it was quiet!!! LESSON 1, always check that you've NOT blocked off any heat risers on a crazy powerful engine. I was lucky it was what it was, coz anything just a tiny bit weaker would've kept on revving till it detonated & left you with nothing but sad sad, totally avoidable final memories of what might have been! Be careful fella's such a simple mistake could've cost me the last 13 years of hard work, blood sweat & a ton of money & a machine that's ssso rare & sought after, they fetch over $100,000 US! I sold it to the president of the Chev & Pontiac car club. A worthy recipient of my baby. It was the only model GTO he & his father didn't have! He has them all now, 64,65,66, my 67,68,69Judge,70 & a 71! You're a lucky man Neville. You got me on the right day at the right time. I'd love to see her again. More so, drive her again. Insane car!!! Jet black, thin gold pin stripes along the sexy body line. I wish I never sold her.

    Pleased to see you do such a nice restoration on a car that ultimately won't be as valuable as the time, money and effort put into the restoration. But from a long time Corvair fan I hope that someday I'll see it a car show.

    LOVED THE CORVAIR HAD THREE. PUT A 1965 140 IN A 1961. CAMED, TWIN 180 TURBOS. BEEFED UP AXELS AND U-JOINT. WELDED SPIDERS. IT WOULD RUN IN THE 13.20S. ONE NIGHT MIAMI/HOLLYWOOD DRAG WAY. OFF THE LINE POPED OUT REAR GLASS. ASK BOB LEE MY MENTOR. THUNDER SHIFTER. SHIFTER THANKS BOB.

    beautiful job! one question though....there are lots of Corvairs out there that are in much better condition to start a restoration with. did this one in particular have some kind of sentimental value or was it the challenge that drove you to this vehicle?

    Chevrolet is better than Ford, just because they build cars in another perspective. Ford has some unique models, but chevy has lots of unique ones.

    I will say the the steering wheel Turned out to be too small for the wide tires and manual steering. A larger diameter wheel is needed

    This thing which is made up of rusty garbage has beautifully painted surface but has no durability as a metal structure. Do not sale it as a car.

    You are an idiot. I went through this car remmoving all the rusted metal and replacing it with new. TIG welding some and Mig welding most. It is solid as a rock. The convertible test of opening the doors and jacking it up...No flexing at ALL. Passes the test! It is as ridigid as my 68 coupe!
