In Jersey we had a TON of these Stick GM buses. ALL used for NYC runs but some were even used intra-state. Just about every New Jersey bus line had Stick GM's.

There was a company in the late 60's called suburban transit I used to ride from Trenton N.J. to the Port Authority in Manhattan. All the busses on that run were New Look four speed manuals. Company colors were orange and black.

This is the sound leaving the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City on the NJ bound buses back in the day… When that bus would leave that glass partitioned loading platform and exit the buildings down the ramp! And you see the view of the bustling city below from the third floor level…To me that was bus heaven!

This must be a "Suburban" model without a back door. These were mainly operated on highways, so a manual transmission makes sense. Try finding a manual equipped "Transit" model with a back door. That's a unicorn.

Some fifty-plus years ago around here, before the local public transit agencies were created, Greyhound used to provide service between San Jose and San Francisco along the peninsula that used mainly manual shift New Look buses. I remember the drivers would do the double-clutching routine, and there was no rear door; only one door at the front.

Counterpoint. Seattle/King County metro here in the Seattle area kept a fleet of 1954 busses going until the early 1980's because they had hydramatic auto transmissions that had 4 speeds and worked reasonably well. What was wrong with the operators of this bus that they saw fit to buy a manual transmission. I wouldn't want to drive a city bus this way and I don't think it can be done today
