1964 GM Bison: The Turbine Titan That Time Forgot
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Join us as we take a look back at the General Motors Bison Concept Truck, a turbine-powered machine that was ahead of its time. This innovative truck featured a four-wheel steering system, a hybrid electrical system, and a vision for standardized freight containers. Though it never progressed beyond the initial concept stage, the Bison Concept Truck remains an important part of automotive history.

I remember as a 10 year old actually sitting behind the wheel of that "Jetson's" cab. It was like a spaceship !! The whole '64 World's Fair was like that. Miss stuff like that.

There are individuals who intentionally stop short in front of commercial vehicles to make an insurance claim. Avoiding this cab-forward design saved the lives of many operators. There would be a question of the vehicle's driving characteristics when unloaded, as well

That is a very cool concept, shame it didn't go into production
Interestingly, this looks more legit 'futuristic' than the Tesla Semi currently in development. Thanks for sharing this! 29th Like.
I am 68 and don't remember this! Wow!
The sun glare on all that glass would have sucked not to mention the summer heat if the AC quit working if it had made it into production . Then there is the whole stepping over the side of the cab to enter the cab canopy which would have dripped anything on the bottom of your shoes on the side of the step over for the cab entrance .

Yeah It looks like the relative position of the cockpit and turbines was inspired by a helicopter, but realistically for a land vehicle switching their placement would be more safe (and would end up looking much more like a conventional semi)

Awesome looks! Good payload. But I wonder about the turbine noise. Another great find!
@brianb-p6586

Noise can be a problem with gas turbine engines, but it's a small problem compared to cost, fuel consumption, response lag, and emissions.
I love the Syd Mead '60s car designs. The biggest problem with them is that the people never looked as cool as the cars, no matter what they were wearing.
Still better looking than a Tesla cyber truck.

I think, back in those days, Chrysler was more associated with turbine technology. My father sold CDP back then, and he brought us kids models of Chrysler / Plymouth turbine-engine cars. Very cool stuff. I had not ever seen this Bison Concept before now, either.
I would so drive that
This concept has to be the most unusual vehicle I've ever encountered. I want one. Horrible approach angle, but would make an interesting rock climber, w/ the four-wheel steer.

... I want to see 1960s truck drivers react to this concept
The turbine could burn just about any fuel. Few moving parts, And would last a lifetime. Not a big profit maker. I fully understand why the vehicle was never produced. Greed rules.
It is disappointing that a video about the Bison does not contain any video of the Bison in motion.

This actually looks pretty cool, someone needs to come up with an updated design for this.
Wouldn't want to get on wreck with that thing.
Advanced features? No cup holders? Probably why it failed.
Makes the Cybertruck look even stupider.
Just to imagine all the Lawsuits that could've happened. Thesedays manufacturers have to set safety standards really high. It wouldn't of passed the crash tests.
Seeing it made me think of Sid Mead's designs. It also made me think of Ron Cobb's designs as well.
The past would be disappointed with our present.
Imagine that front driver’s side tire blows out!! Pink mist.
1964 with all the vehicles out there that was a hot wheels car invention amazing design classic car shows had a lot of ideas off this was amazing for a truck . Futuristic as hell but the diesel got better in years to come .
I was at the 64-65 New York world's fair GM pavilion many times. I never saw this "truck".???
Better than Cybertruck!
Lets pull out all the stops on this! Hmmm, lets put a few back in.
Not the Jetsons. It looked like something from *"Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons!*
That’s is one cool looking truck as for gas turbines I’ll always maintain it was ashamed when you remember that GM, Chrysler and Ford all have turbine programs back then that they abandoned gas turbines it would have made a lot more sense than the EV and hybrid potential moving fireballs that are being forced on us today.

Turbine engines are tried every few years. For the past couple of decades, they have been tried in series turbine-electric hybrid systems which address some of the problems... and they're still not viable in any road vehicle. GM, Chrysler, and Ford all made the right call decades ago. In case you missed them, check out the buses with Capstone microturbines, the Wrightspeed heavy truck system from several years ago (not their current website, from which all trace of turbines has been deleted), and the relatively current Cosworth CatGen.

LOL, Turbines use lots of fuel. High explosive fuel. On my every day way to work i pass several burnmarks on the german roads. None of them is from a EV.
@brianb-p6586
11 күн бұрын
@jurgens9867 turbine engines use lots of fuel (a major reason that they are not used in trucks) but it's far from "high explosive"; apparently you don't know what that term means. Turbine fuel is kerosene-based, like diesel fuel, and is less volatile than gasoline... and even gasoline is not a high explosive.

Captain Scarlet!
Looks super cool and completely unpractical. I don't think the average truck driver would trade being able to roll down a window for looking like a Jetson.
And now the newer designs are used on airports to pull airplanes. :)
Wonder what a water buffalo would have looked like😂
Why can't we have interior styling like that? It looks modern. Ok the steering looks like it would be a disaster, and you could have a HUD.. other than that it looks fantastic. It looks like an awesome idea for a truck.
Its designed so straightforward it appears backwards.
That white one would not of looked out of place if it had featured in V the mini series from the 1980's. 😄
Let's hope it never had to brake or accelerate
Cool rig but not sure it would work out well on a sunny day. After seeing this I see where they got the styling for the late 80's tv show Highwayman. Jetto's rig is rather close design, but the main rig that Sam drove is different because it was a helicopter attached to the lower chassis although the chassis is still similar in keeping a low slung chassis.

They built a cab under tractor a company called Strick had them saw them out west. BTW Jacko.s rig was on EBay not long ago asking 90K for it
The cab under design is actually alive and well on heavy lift cranes, airport tractors, and futuristic APCs, as seen in Aliens, yes I know what it was based on😊.
This a different video : the GM Bison semi truck concept . Very interesting , but the style never got off the ground because businesses weren’t interested in showing off at the time . But I bet they wish they did now ! We are still driving bricks .
Driver … themselves? Himself!
They should have used this instead of the ‘moon buggy’ when they faking the moon landing.
So the cab had 0 articulation? The trailer seems to mount directly to the engine pod with no room for motion. So I'm guessing the 4 wheel steering was to make up for that.
Didn’t GMC use the Bison name on tractor/trucks in the ‘70’s?
Did you even write this script, or did you tell a computer to write it for you, just like you did for the narration? I think I know the answer already.
i still think they should use turbines for long haul tractors helicopter turbines
Looks as if a head-on collision at any speed would utterly destroy it and kill the driver/passenger instantly.
0:40 i think the turbines are being blocked...
Exactly - it reads 100% Gerry Anderson rather than Hanna Barbera.
