1964 Columbia Avenue riot in Philadelphia Then and Now
Photo comparison of the 1964 Columbia Avenue riot locations, in 1964 and 2022.
There is some confusion over the location of the Liberty Theater. Phillyhistory.org has a photo with a street sign in the foreground indicating a location at 1600 N Carlisle St. Other information shows it at 1425 Columbia Avenue. The "now" location in the video is at the Phillyhistory 1600 Carlisle St. location. Sorry for any confusion if it is incorrect. In either case, the Liberty Theater is long gone.

Never heard about the Columbia Ave. Riot of Philadelphia of 1964. Thank you for posting this video! I love history alot. You get to learn new things about the history of the United States and its states.
Some things never change.
Nice video, Craig! I was hoping that one of the archived photos would have shown my relatives who were officers at the time. Sadly, they were not.
Thank you for the video.
Remember it well. A friend's husband had just purchased a shoe store earlier that year from his boss. It was destroyed during the riot. He was able to repair and come back.
It is wrong to stereotype a person simply because of their race or ethnicity. But sometimes stereotypes are caused by the actions of a great many people within a group, and they indeed might possess an element of truth.

You’re right, police officers really do just love beating people. Especially their wives!

So true
In 1952 I attended religious classes after school at the synagogue at Broad and Columbia. After class I would wait for my father on the corner of 15th and Columbia to pick me up on his way home. The neighborhood was Black then, but there was no sense of discomfort, never mind danger, even in the winter when it was dark by 5 o’clock.
I walk those streets from the day I was born with my father. In the drums are still ringing in my head bless up.
Very cool...going back to the past👍🇧🇷
No video footage of this event exist only pics

Hard to believe in today’s world where everybody has a smartphone in their pocket to capture video. Back then the local news channels would have to dispatch a crew with 16mm film cameras. Most of the still photos were taken by Inquirer and Bulletin newspaper photographers.

In Venezuela just the opposite. Lots of crime in CUBA none. Same in wonderful NORTH KOREA. NO VIOLENT CRIME
From Russian Subscriber in Asia USA needs to be a AUTHORITARIAN STATE with a NATIONAL POLICE FORCE. TOO MUCH FREEDOM ALWAYS IN HISTORY BRINGS CRIME ANARCHY. YOU NEED ANTI AFFIRMATIVE ACTION LAWS LOCK UP YOUR LEFTISTS N RADICALS AS WE DO. THEN YOUR VERY SAFE MUCH BLESSINGS TO ALL YULIYA GOD 1ST ALWAYS ⛪✝️
