1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ: The Project | Petrolicious

The 105 Series Alfa Romeos, the Giulias, are widely loved. They are also widely raced. Giulia coupes and sedans are a common choice for enthusiasts looking for a vintage car to modify and take to the track, and back in the 1960s Alfa Romeo had a similar idea. They built a few racing-oriented versions of the 105 Series through their Autodelta competition division, but in 1963 the Tubolare Zagato was the most radical development by far. It featured a tube frame chassis, all aluminum coachwork by Zagato, and it was homologated a year later.
This example went to California when it was new in ’64, where it lived a hard life as a race car before David Eichenbaum picked up the project decades later. With help from devoted Alfa restorer Conrad Stevenson, it has been returned to its former glory.

A compelling story about a lovely Alfa TZ1 - a car that I have admired since it appeared in the Alfa brochure in 1964 or 1965. This example with restoration by Conrad Stevenson is simply magnificent. Designed by Ercole Spade, the TZ1 and its successor the TZ2 are masterpieces from the golden era of car design and motorsport.

I’ve watched a few Petrolicious vids now and they all tug at my heartstrings. I love the stories of the people and their cars and remind why I love cars so much. Only a true petrolhead would get them and I fear we are a dying breed in the age of electrification and worthy but mainly boring modern cars.

took a birthday adventure in 2018 from Missouri to my friend Curtis' old barn looking across the Russian river. we took stock of my Ducati 851's AL tank with it's cursed & bruised exterior. it was a great time hanging out with Curtis & his giant amounts of talent eased gently by the affable demeanor. i took notice of the TZ but tried to act like it was secondary every time we entered the barn to further the evolution of my 851 tank's aesthetics. finally, the tank was completed & it was time to chill & take in the barn's artifacts, tools, bikes and the TZ. Curtis accommodated the camera's needs & we took advantage of the short time. the intricate beauty of this car is something we didn't get to see here in this vid, but i have the pics to demonstrate; the engine bay, the quality of the assembly & the hand built aura of all the components will make one gobsmacked. i had an extremely wonderful Kalifornia birthday amongst a Bologna gas tank & a San Germano legend.

In the 1980s there was a TZ1 kit car offered. One could buy a tack welded tubular chassis, a fiberglass body, weld up the chassis, source parts, and have a reasonable facsimile of a TZ1. I don't know how many were actually sold, much less built. I do know that I wanted one, they are beautiful cars. Were the kits available now I think that the current Mazda Miata would make the ideal donor car for running gear, suspension, engine, transmission, all those parts would be ideal in a modern TZ.

Historical note; 1964 12 Hrs of Sebring, night hours, Consalvo Senisi driving a TZ2 was rear ended by a Cobra while stopped in the pits. There ensued a huge gasoline fueled fire that engulfed both cars. Senisi was trapped in the Alfa and Jocko Maggiacomo of Poughkeepsie NY leapt into the fire, smashed the rear window out and pulled Senisi out of the fire. The fire was so hot that Senisi's helmet was beginning to melt. Jocko's hands were badly burned so that he couldn't take his turn driving (a Cobra I believe). Corrections/additions welcomed.

I don't wish to take anything away from the outstanding Petrolicious video (I admit I am very biased) but for all those that would like to see and hear this TZ "working it", I made this iPhone video covering the day I was with it at Pebble Beach in August. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWag0Lmsm82Xd84.html Please read the notes below the video for the backstory. The last 9 minutes or so of the video are of my ride in the TZ from the concourse field back to where my truck was parked on 29 Mile Drive. I hope you enjoy it, but please don't hate me!
