1963 Cadillacs Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In overall terms the 1963 Cadillac was essentially the same as the previous year. Exterior changes imparted a bolder and longer look. Hoods and deck lids were redesigned. The front fenders projected 4.625 inches further forward than in 1962 while the tailfins were trimmed down somewhat to provide a lower profile. Body side sculpturing was entirely eliminated. The slightly V-shaped radiator grille was taller and now incorporated outer extensions that swept below the flush-fender dual headlamps. Smaller circular front parking lamps were mounted in those extensions. A De Ville signature script was incorporated above the lower beltline molding near the rear of the body. A total of 143 options including bucket seats with wool, leather or nylon upholstery fabrics and wood veneer facings on dash, doors and seatbacks, set an all-time record for interior appointment choices. Standard equipment was the same as the previous year.
The engine was entirely changed, though the displacement and output remained the same, 390 cu in (6.4 l) and 325 hp (242 kW)

@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar LOL, I'd have to take your word on that one. I can confirm that a Honda Civic and a 90's 2500 4X4 Dodge Ram driven on California roads will destroy a spine in short order.

@jason9022, do I know you Jason? I didn't say anything about "liking" your comment, why are you suggesting that I don't like something? If we don't know each other, then its obvious you are a troll: a hatter: a jealous person with nothing but excess time on their hands.. If I do know you, speak up brother, tell me how it is based on what you know about me as a friend.

The 63 engine was indeed a new design; a different block than 49-62. It was the same block as the 429, which came along for 64. The 63 all-new 390 was still 325 hp. like before.

1963 was a significant year as that exterior design is what Cadillac's were going to look like for the next forty-five or so years.

@@paulpeterson4311 There are design elements present in ‘63 that are repeated over the next 45 or so years. But they were not “new” in ‘63. ‘61 & ‘62 were aberrant years for Cadillac. In ‘61 it was redesigned to look “smaller”. The lower tail fin was to help give it the appearance of being lower than it really was.

avioncamper That was typical of Test Vehicles. They didn't want identifying badging. Although everybody would still recognize them. LOL!! These were undoubtedly out doing high altitude testing for Cadillac. Because of changes to the 390 in '63 I suspect that they brought along the '62 for comparison purposes.

Who wrote this caption? What was "entirely changed" about the engine if the cubes and H.P. "remained the same" ? G.M. used to make test videos at Pikes Peak @ 14K feet. This was shot about 50 miles west of Pikes Peak. I have the feeling this video was made before or after an official G.M. test video for home use by this group of sextuplets and the guys in the Pontiac. Very interesting piece of Americana tho. ....Bob Cardillo

Bob Car. I agree, this engine is not "entirely new". The HP was boosted for '63 but '64 brought out the 429 which was still the 390 but bored out. '68 was the first real new design with the 472.

The look of various models is entirely a matter of personal opinion. I prefer the '63 over the '64. I've had 3 '63s so you can see my bias. The tail fin on the '64 looks like the designers took a block plane and shaved an inch off it. The turn signal in the front has been blended into the grill on the '64 but is too large imo. I also don't care for the horizontal "v" point on the grill or the body colored turn signal indicator on the top of the fender in the '64. But these are my biased opinions. You are most entitled to your own. That's how GM kept selling so many cars!! LOL!!
