    My mother Rallye raced her '64 Spyder w/ the 150 HP turbo engine and would tell anyone that she could " dust off" any Vette that tried her. She and her Corvair are the reason I own my '65 Monza. Great driving cars w/ a very "bad rap." The mid-mount V8 versions are absolute track monsters. Check one out if you can. Serious thrill ride.

    My family owned 2 of these in the '70s. One auto and one stick. I learned to drive in the auto. No power assist for steering or brakes.

    The Corvair wasn't killed by Nader, severely reduced sales but not dead. What finally killed it was the Ford Falcon, than primarily the Mustang and finally the Chevy II. Growing up, our family had a 64 Monza (110hp) convertible, later on I had a 66 Corsa (140hp) convertible. My Mom worked at a tire store and was given a free set of Michelin radials. It was funny seeing mechanics shake their heads when my five foot and a bit mom tried to tell them the tires weren't flat. ;-D

    Beautiful Car! I have a 63' Corvair 900 (same car) with a powerglide trans. What was sooo dangerous back then is the standard of safety now. Most ALL cars today are designed the same as the corvair. The car was far ahead of times.

    My first driver was my moms 1960 Corvair 700 I don't recall if it also had the Monza designation but it had the sportier interior. My first car was a 65 Corsa 140 followed throughout the succeeding years with a 62 Corvair van and ending with a 66 140 Corsa. Awesome cars all. If I had large garage I'd love to add this one to the family. Nice car!

    Nice Corvair! The early model cars had 4 trim levels: 500, 700, Monza 900, and the Spyder. The Spyder was replaced with the Corsa model in the late model and it was available with a 4 carb 140HP engine or the 180HP Turbo. Nothing else sounds quite like a Corvair. Happy motoring!

    This car is soooooooo much like my 63'. I looked for Monza hubcaps forever, and when i would Ebay them they would NEVER look like the picture when i got them. Got tired of paying for return delivery fees. Painted my Monza Flat Black wih flat Black rims to match. Put the whitewalls on them and I'm Cool! Anyhoo, i like this car, because it has more of a "weekend driver" feel than a "look at me at the Corvair car show' feel. (A working Man's Corvair)

    SYK - I believe there was the 95hp/2 carb, 110hp Monza/2 carbs, Monza Spyder (turbo) 150hp/ 1 side draft carb. Second gen (1965) Had 110hp Monza/2 carbs, 140hp Corsa/4 carbs and Corsa Spyder (turbo) 180hp/ 1 side draft carb. The Corvair was the 2nd production turbocharged car (missed it by a month).

  • @gregbryant6639

    I never said that it would outrun a Porsche. I simply said Chevy turbo charged a flat 6 long before Porsche ever did. If we are comparing a 1962 turbo corvair spyder to a 1962 Porsche of the equivalent model then yes the Corvair would be faster in a straight line. However, if we are comparing a 1962 corvair spyder to a 1977 911 turbo the obviously the Porsche would be faster. But, at that point we are comparing apples to oranges and there is no way to put the two on the same playing field as one is 15 years ahead of the other. Again, I simply stated Chevy turbo charged a flat 6 before Porsche (which they did).

  • @johnkendall6962

    @johnkendall6962

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@gregbryant6639 I just get tired of the Porsche /Corvair comparison They were different cars built for different markets.1 a two door sports car with a flat 4 ,at the time, the other a 6 passenger economy car.In any case the little boost from the turbo didn't change the performance much mainly because the technology of the time didn't allow higher boost.

  • @gregbryant6639

    @gregbryant6639

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@johnkendall6962 Chevy considered the Corvair a sports car it was a competitor to the mustang before the Camaro came along so in a way it was a sports car. It is not a 6 passenger car in 2 door trim, it is a 4 passenger car. And a little bit of boost made a huge difference. N/A the flat 6 was 92hp with boost it was 140hp. I would say a 50% increase in horsepower is pretty significant. Again all I said is that Chevy turbo charged the flat 6 long before Porsche did.

    As far as a Pony car goes with the Corvair, I say Nope! The Plymouth Barracuda was the first true Pony car. The Ford Mustang beat the Barracuda out by a short margin. The Corvair was merely a sporty compact produced by Chevy.....neither a sports car or a Pony car.
