1962 Chevrolet Z11 at Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals - Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #198
#musclecar #v8tv
The early 1960s saw American automakers building some very special and very limited editions of production models that appeared to be stock, but were hiding some tricks to make them race-ready. This 1962 Chevrolet Impala Z11 is just such a car. A factory-built lightweight racer, this car features a high-performance 409 engine and aluminum body panels to reduce weight. The restoration was debuted by Jim Mattison at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago.

Incredible find....& impeccable restoration. Such nostalgia is priceless! Many kudos to Mr. Mattison, the gatekeeper of Pontiac Historical Society's archives.
Thats so purdy. I remember when those came out when I was a kid. At the time my favorite chevy was the 57 BelAir. I knew the 57 would be a classic even before it was a classic.
She's real fine that 409!!
Great car and video. Shame we couldn't hear it make beautiful music!
Not everyday you see an oddball Chevy. Very cool car.
That's one beautiful car nice find good job
Beautiful, also.
I know that car, I knew the man that drove it. RIP mr Harrell
Nice car and Thumbs Up !
Everyone had a black S/S 409, but a Z11"sure" with an aluminum front end "sure again" and they all survived. lol. Mine was a theft, missing what else, engine trans and buckets. Put in a 283, 3spd.O/D and a matching full seat. BTW, Sears had replacement matching hubcaps @ $6.00 a piece. The original price for one out the dealers door was $3,100.00.
I like the old competition between the big 3 to make drag cars for the street my hope is with Dodge coming out with the demon it will trigger the others to follow.

Chevrolet and Hennessey teamed up to create the "Exorcist." It's a supposedly going to be a 1000hp ZL1 Camaro specifically designed to beat the Demon. Ford has had the Shelby Super Snake for a while but we will have to wait and see if they create anything else.
Very good 😊 to ibella relase car
WHAT REAR END GEAR RAITO DID IT HAVE FROM THE FACTORY AND WAS IT A POSI TRAC? WHAT WERE THE TIMES AND SPEED IT TURNED IN THE QUARTER MILE? THANKS
I'm confused. Unless I missed it in the story I thought the Z11 was a stroked 409 displacing 427 Cubic Inches. These guys described this as being a 409 and it says so on the side. Again, I was pretty sure that the Z11 was a 427 engine not 409 and was rated at 430HP. Did I miss something?

Yeah I thought the same thing, that the Z11 Impalas all came with the 427, and not the 409. The 427 and 409 we're completely different big blocks. The 409 was based on the 348 while the 427 was just like every other big block Chevy engine (396,402,454)

1962 was a test and the engine was an upgrade from the the RPO 587 but had the aluminum front end fenders. 1963 were 427 ci and had aluminum front fenders, bumpers and cowl induction. Most were built as with the bottom body white blue top and blue interior. Delete radio, heater & insulation and sealers. 150 cars were built and 100 were crushed when John F. Gordon disbanded the racing program.

@@jeremythompson9895 Nope! The Z11 427's were stroked 409's with some other modifications. The "Mystery" motor used in NASCAR in '63 was the new generation big block 427. Two different engines, both 427 cubes.

@@fredmartin1626 I think your numbers are a little high for '63 models. I believe it was closer to 50 built. I worked at the Chevy assembly plant in St. Louis from '61 to '66 as a shipping clerk. One night in '63 a rail car was pushed in next to our building with 10 - Z11's on their way to York Pennsylvania. They came in all different colors but all were solid. Red, black, aqua, silver etc. The 427 in the '63 was a stroked 409 "W" block with some other modifications. I find the story about 100 being crushed hard to believe. There is a group on Facebook dedicated to Z11's and their detailed information on the history of it is amazing!
One story I always found interesting about the 409 was that the last year it was produced in the impala (1966 I believe) it was actually 427 cubic inches but Chevy decided not to market it as a 427, but rather leave that moniker to the new BBC 427 .

Steve, I have never heard this before. The 409 was available for the first half of 65. Then, around the second half of the model year the 396 was available in a 325 HP version. And, a 425 HP version. The 409 was dropped at this time. One strange thing is the almost exact 396 engine was rated 375 HP in the chevelle. I believe this was for insurance purposes. But, if you have any information or references about the 409's actually being a 427 I would be very interested to see it. I subscribed to Super Chevy, Chevy High Performance, and Hot Rod for many years and never seen anything about 427's being substituted for the 409's. Plus, watched many of those car shows for years and never heard of this. But, I'm always open to learning/hearing about new things.
Terrible audio. Back ground noise and that silly music drowned out the owner.
Booo!!! Take it outside and let us hear it run!!! Waste of time looking at it.
Z11 engine was one of the worst engines that GM ever produced.
