This is sure a treasure. I remember this season even though I was only 8 when the WS was played. I play the baseball strat-o-matic game still bought back in 1971 when I picked up all the 1960s contender teams offered by the game. I still have the 1961 Yankees and Reds teams so am very familar with both. As mentioned below, Mantle had a leg infection and Maris hit only .105 in the WS after both had great seasons. It was Bobby Richardson, Moose Skowron, Hector Lopez, and Johnny Blanchard who really stepped up big. The Yankees had a big home run hitting team, but what also made them so good was the pitching of Whitey Ford, Ralph Terry, Bill Stafford, and their reliver Luis Arroyo. St. Louis hero Yogi Berra could still play well. The Reds had Frank Robinson and their own big hitters. Cards fan

I was 12 years-old, and a fan of both Jim O'Toole, and Mickey Mantle. Also a big fan of Mel Allen and Joe Garagiola.

The pitcher here is Jim O'Toole, who was a lefthander. Maloney was a right-handed thrower and he never appeared in game 4 of that WS.

Really? Why would you comment on who was throwing in the bullpen?

Ironically, it was Mel Allen’s fault that Mantle was injured. Allen had recommended a quack doctor who treated celebrities, including President Kennedy, with vitamin shots. The one to mantle was mid-administered, became seriously infected. Thus Mantle’s absence for most of series.

It wasn't Mel Allen's fault. It was Mickey Mantle's fault. He was a big boy and should've known better than to take a medical referral from a baseball announcer. But he was a corn fed hick who was more concerned with abusing his liver than his own physical wellbeing.

Yes, plus Johnny Blanchard would PH. The Reds, ironically, went with three catchers in this World Series: Jerry Zimmerman, Johnny Edwards, and Darrell Johnson, who Cincinnati got late in the season. I am writing a book as we speak that includes the 1961 World Series.
