Nelson Stacy and Marvin Panch (relief driving for Fireball Roberts) battle for the win during the 1961 Darlington Southern 500. This was the first Southern 500 with a pit road wall. It was constructed following Bobby Johns crash in the 1960 Southern 500 that killed crew-chief Paul McDuffie, mechanic Charles Sweatlund, and Nascar inspector Joe Taylor.

Thanks for posting this. Been waiting a long time for this one & the 1959 Southern 500.
Is there anybody else out there who can hear Merle Haggard off in the distance singing: "Is the best of the free life behind us now Are the good times really over for good?"
It'd be awesome if they put this into a nascar video game you can race from the 50s into present day along with trackable statistics and maybe some out of car gameplay and choices to make would be hand down the best racing game ever made

Didn't work out much for Fireball Roberts cuz it was Nelson Stacy that was on fire.

Roberts made the mistake not to pit for fresh tires, if he wasn't to make that bad decision, Nelson would still be breathing smoke.

I used to work for a company based in Darlington. It is good to see an event where people were not intimidated to proudly display the Confederate flag.

The Southern "500" was once NASCAR's biggest event, but even back in 1961, it had been eclipsed in importance by the Daytona "500".
