BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on KZread or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area. This upload features materials protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act. The ads were three minutes every 15 minutes. Like clockwork. Now the ads are every five minutes for five minutes.

I get so fascinated watching these old commercials. It always makes me wonder about what life was like back when these aired? How many households watched these commercials and connected with them? How did they come up with commercials like this to sell these products? Did they buy into it or were they critical of it like now?

0:21 - Dick Tufeld on the voiceover in the ad for the Sunbeam electric razor. He also does the voiceover in the Pollyanna spot at 20:14.* 4:24 - Bert Parks for Van Heusen men's sport shirts. 6:24 - Former Dodgers announcer Red Barber for Gulf gasoline. 7:24 - Ann Starr Roberts as Katy Winters for Secret deodorant, back in the days when it wasn't just for women. 14:45 - Art Fleming of Jeopardy! for Derma-Fresh lotion. 21:45 - Thurl Ravenscroft as Tony the Tiger for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. 22:14 - Peter Marshall from Hollywood Squares for Kellogg's Variety cereal assortment. 23:46 - Alan Napier for Fact toothpaste, in a Batman & Robin promo poster tie-in. *Correction on the 20:14 Pollyanna spot: Dick Wesson. Looks like I lacked Wessonality...

The "Pollyanna" spot is v/o'ed by Dick Wesson, the voice of many Disney films from 1954-79.

@@zaq55 Not sure, but I don't believe Tufeld ever did voiceover work for Disney. It's mostly pronunciation differences.

Looks more like nighttime commercials than daytime. I know Alfred Hitchcock never ran in daytime during its original network run.
