1959 Chevrolet Apache Truck with 353 Detroit Diesel Engine and two transmissions.
Here's a look at the truck I had for almost 35 years before giving it back to my brother.
1959 Chev 1 ton 9 foot long box, step side.
Pulled the gas engine out in the spring of 1991 and replaced it with an aluminum block 353 Detroit Diesel engine. Discovered right away it was too slow & added another transmission to speed it up a bit.
Looking forward to firing it up and taking it for a spin & make a video of it's glorious sound soon.

    @@russvoight1167 Twin stick trucks have both trannys facing forward. It is to give the driver more gears to keep the engine in the power range for heavy loads. But I have seen several pickup and tonners that have had the diesel conversion done, and most of them have followed this method to get the truck capable of highway speeds. Most of them do not shift the back tranny because they have bigger higher powered diesels. Although the ability to gear down for heavy loads or close quarters would be great.

    @@lovesloudcars I don't know of an auxiliary with 2 overdrives but they probably made one. I have no idea why I never thought of running one of those backwards. I know where there is a Spicer 6041 in an old junk truck, now that has a good set of ratios just like it is. 2.14, 1.24, 1.00, .86. So if you turned it around backwards, just a rough guess, you'd have about a 50% overdrive, about a 20% over drive, direct, and a 20% underdrive. Now that's a whole new world lol. Anyway I can't wait to see you driving that truck, love the Detroit, I have a 4-53 pulling a sawmill. It will out pull a 3-71 any day. I have a 6-71 in a truck too.

    That's a dream truck right there! You've basically got yourself a scaled down semi. And the back to back transmission thing is genius! That may be an option for making my old Ford go faster. I love having the low gearing. I stick it in first and could probably pull a down house, but I feel like the 352 is gonna explode if I push it past 60mph. It's annoying going so slow when everyone else is flying past you at 80+.

  • @lovesloudcars

    @lovesloudcars

    3 жыл бұрын

    Man you're preaching to the choir there my friend. I think the transmission worked great, but there's likely better options if you don't have a 2$ truck sitting out back like I did. I bet your Ford is an awesome rig already hey? Have you heard of a Ranger gear splitter? I've never seen one but they go between the bell housing and transmission. 20% overdrive or something like that, about 7 inches thick. So would not be super tough to fit into a truck. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the truck I drive most, which is an 82 international about 3or 5 ton. Same thing, way too slow. I'd like to find a small auxiliary transmission to hang behind just like I did here. Did you get to watch part 2 driving it yet? In the late ‘40s, my Dad built a mid size garden tractor and used a dual tranny setup similar to this to get the gearing he wanted to plow with a small air cooled engine. I believe he ran them in series with both facing forward for a mega gear reduction. I remember driving it as a six year old and it would barely creep along in double low with the engine at power. Double high was just that: like a single high gear. He had some pretty aggressive tires and nothing would stop it when it was plowing. You may not be going fast but you couldn’t stall it. Thanks for taking me back there. I have always wondered what happened to it.

    That’s just a gorgeous machine dude! I had a 1975 Chevy c10 step side as my first truck, it was on a 4” lift but it had been beaten up so badly the suspension needed to be replaced and I mean everything under it needed to be replaced. My uncle’s girlfriend at the time blew the engine in it so it sat in my uncles yard for 2 years after that, he took me too it one day and he had another truck sitting next to it with a fresh 305 in it. He said to me “if you can put the engine in that truck into the 75 you can have it!” So in a matter of 2 days I had the other engine in the 75, it never ran right though and wouldn’t pass the smog test in Arizona so I couldn’t drive it to school, i had to leave it with my uncle whom I can’t get a hold of today so idk if he still has it to this day or if he’s since sold it. I had awesome plans for it though, the Diesel engine swap kind lol. One day I’ll get another 75 Chevy step side short bed and do what I’ve been planning with it, just a matter of time and money!

    Interesting hack on the double transmissions. My buddy bought a bunch of 3-53's that came off military Gamma Goats. They all had bellhousings that would bolt up to the GM SM-465 transmission. The OE transmission was SM-465 except it had a top with levers for remote shifting instead of a shift handle. He played with various injectors till it smoked. His went into 3/4t Chevy pickups and one with an automatic went into a Dodge because he liked that the firewall was way back and flat. He had a CNC shop make him up several kits to install a THM-400 with mechanical control of the former vacuum controlled modulator. All these he changed the rear end gearing to top out at 65 with the pedal on the floor.

Have you ever heard/seen U.D NISSAN 2-stroke diesel engines 3, 4 and 5-cyl, Japanese from the early 1970's? (They were transplanted into more than few trucks here in Aus) or an English Gardner 5-cyl 2-stroke.The UD 3 and 4-cyl (surprise, surprise, looked a heck-of-a-lot like GM's). The Gardner 5-cyl had an incredible sound. The crankshaft 'layout' meant that they fired 1,2,3,4,5 consecutively. Ya really should KZread 'em. That's if you're not familiar with the Gardner. Thanks for the video.... great to see another DD powering a pick-up. The 3 & 4-53's were available in late 50s Studebaker trucks... I drove one for a fellow I met at a Studebaker "Show & Shine" meet in Montana back in the mid-90s... he had a 5x3 in his 3/4T Stude, and had never let anyone drive it until I did, as I nearly 27 of twin stick experience (at that time) in class 8 trucks, including my own with V12 power... and he wanted to hear and record what it sounded like going through all the gears.... was a privilege and an honor that he trusted me with it.... was lots of fun to drive! If I understand you correctly.... the original cast iron cased 4 speed was a direct "bolt on" to the 53's bell housing, with no need for an adapter plate of any kind? I take it that it has a No. 3 bell housing? What was this engine originally out of?..... a small P&D type of delivery truck? I know that back in the 60s & 70s there were several companies that built "bakery" type delivery trucks (ie: Hostess Cup Cakes had hundreds of them in their fleets, as well as numerous grocery distributors to stores) that were (mostly) 3-53N powered... some of the larger units had the 4-53N. • @lovesloudcars

    Yes it did bolt on directly to the engine. I bought the motor from a wrecker in Calgary about spring of 91? The guy told me it was out of a Gamma Goat ( which I've never investigated, but a predecessor of the Hummer?) It came with the clutch & bell housing, and when I pulled the old straight 6 out the old 4 speed was the same everything, so we just bolted it up. Figured GM was smarter back then with using the same sizes. Don't know what size it was. Would love to find an old truck with one in it already, especially if it had a good auxiliary. Thanks Charles for the compliment. Hope you enjoyed part 2 driving it as well. The transmission thing is not crazy , just instead of making you go slower as a normal one does facing forward, the opposite happens. Stay tuned. I try to share all kinds of family friendly stuff that is hopefully interesting and entertaining. Posted another blowing up a beaver dam a couple weeks ago. Hoping to get some more footage of the old black truck after winter showing some more shifting & exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse. Stay safe & have a great Sunday with your family. That's what my plan is. sing, read, share and try and keep it different than other days. God Bless.

    I find it hilarious that people say that you can't twin stick a '59 apache, as if the concept of twin sticks is a fake idea. Meanwhile, nearly every commercial truck of the era was running twin sticks. That's a super creative way to twin stick this old sweetheart though! I love it

And I've got another 353 Detroit engine that's been rebuilt since about 1982 waiting in a shed for such a purpose. I hope you also enjoyed part 2 driving it? Among the dozens of machines & vehicles I've got, I've got probably 10 Detroit engines kicking around including 3 more 353's. I love Detroits, they are a real tough motor. Diesel fuel turned to noise, but the were simple enough and seemed to never quit. Will be going over to my brother's place & fire it up & take it for a spin soon I hope. Been wanting to do exactly this conversion for number of years but never got to it. Enjoying the ' up yours ' as well but yeah some don't have the savvy. Practically one only needs 3rd an 4th on second box as other gear ratios would get way too long. Best wishes from another old timer in South Africa.
