As a child, we had a 56 Desoto Fireflight. The car was ahead of its time. The Hemi engine and the electric transmission control was wonderful. I got to drive it as a teenager on dirt roads. Ours did not have power steering or power brakes or air conditioning. Without power steering, your arms got a workout.

Not sure if this is true but the local auto museum displays all their cars in drive. I asked one of the owners why they did that and they explained to me that it keeps the torque converter from draining back so the transmissions don't leak. The cars are for sale so they want to keep leaks to a minimum. Maybe this helps.

I have a 1955 DeSoto Firedome that’s been in my family since 1973 in Nebraska. It’s mechanically sound and drives great, but just out of curiosity, what are some common problems associated with the 291 Hemi? In the future I’d like to get it rebuilt, but I’d like to know more about the engine. Great channel!

I'm not really aware of any problematic issues for these early hemis, when maintained. They're expensive to rebuild mostly because of the cost of parts, but even that can swing wildly based on the condition of the engine prior to rebuild. A '55 we had rebuilt that was in quite good shape otherwise was less than 2K (iirc), while a '56 we did that was siezed, required a sleeve in one cylinder, needed many new parts, and had a crack in a water jacket was over 5K

Finding camshafts is the biggest challenge. For the 291 the main bearings are unique. Next is getting roller lifters to fit. A lot of 318 stuff can be adapted to work. I feel the 291 is one of the best kept secrets and wish they had put them in the 55 belvedere. Its a very stout engine and has much greater potential than the red ram.

Mine is a 2 door, in the family since '60 or'61 (ky). I have spent some money on brakes and front suspension, but not the engine (except normal mnt.). Drive it a little about once a week- gets very poor gas mileage. I have most of a spare engine, I used to think about rebuilding to put in a vintage p.u. I guess that wont happen now. Don't cry, someone may appreciate ownership someday

I'm almost ready to start my 56 Firedome 330. Is there any concern to running it on just the exhaust manifolds and no pipe? Thanks

The torque converter isn’t supposed to drain when not running

It’s well known by collectors everywhere and explained by respected transmission specialists that a car in long term storage will leak down its torque converter and overflow the transmission pan.

What transmission is that? I'm only seeing a second gear servo housing. No low/reverse servo housing. Is this a newer transmission that uses a clutch pack for low/reverse instead of a band?

Can someone please make a video of the crazy scissor operation of the rear windows on the four door hardtops. A video is no where to be found on the entire internet and that Rube Goldberg of a window mechanism needs to be documented.

I might have one…. We did a four-door hardtop back in 2013 or so
