Excerpts from “The Cinema of Manuel Conde” by Nicanor G. Tiongson-
“Probably a remake of or based on an earlier ‘Doon Po Sa Amin’ (1946), ‘Pilipino Kostum - No Touch!’, which was shown from November 1 to 10, 1955, at the Dalisay, revolved around the Filipino traditions surrounding courtship and marriage. Upon the advice of his heart (an apple-shaped creature with eyes, mouth, hands, and feet), Arturo searches for the girl with whom he should settle down. His heart rejects girl after girl he dates until he falls for Adeling, a barrio lass whom he must court by rendering physical and menial services to Adeling’s father and two lazy brothers…’Pilipino Kostum - No Touch!’ is notable for its critical, and sometimes satirical, stance towards traditional courtship customs which it exposes as plainly exploitative, as well as age-old values which are shown to be superficial and double-standard, if not ourightly hypocritical…In the ‘pamamanhikan’ scene, the clash between the ‘conservatives’ and the ‘moderns’ is visualized in a dance ‘debate,’ with one side performing the cariñosa, pandango sa ilaw, tinikling and maglalatik and the other dishing out the charleston, boogie-woogie and chacha.”
