Oldsmobile was king back in the 50s and it’s obvious when you take a good look at one up close they’re simply gorgeous and got plenty of power under the hood.

This is a very scrumptious automobile. I've always thought that the styling of the '54 and '55 Oldsmobiles was unique and their use of color was very eye catching. Air conditioning was very rare in '55, especially on convertibles and that very large Frigidaire compressor was used on the earliest units. Frank is a very knowledgeable owner and and I enjoy hearing his comments. Great job as always Lou and keep up the good work!

A fantastic car. My dad bought a new 1955 Super 88 in two tone orange and I later bought a 1956 98 the same color as yours. They were great high quality cars. We never had any reliability problems. JB

Truly amazing, just try to find ANY other ‘55 car that has power steering, power seat, power windows and A/C. These were all miracle optiona back then, just introduced a few years earlier. It even has the automatic headlight dimmer and power antenna. (At least I noticed a switch under the dash) A fully loaded car, imagine the attention this must have gotten back then.

The 4 seat Thunderbird and the Lincolns had air conditioning units built in to the dash starting in 58. The full sized Ford and Mercurys didn't offer the integrated A/C units until 1965. Interestingly enough the Ford Falcon was the first compact built in the US to have integrated air in 66. The Rambler American, Plymouth Valiants, Dodge Darts and Chevy IOS were still being mounted under the dash. Not sure about Corvair.

I had one as a kid. Yes a 98 Starfire. It was 1965. Bought it from the original owner for $100.00. Although the paint was dead the car was rust & dent free. Not even any door dings. Besides not maintaining the paint I suspect we were behind on the oil changes as my 19 year old driving style quickly broke a skirt off one of the pistons. A rebuilt short block and a fresh coat of blue paint gave this kid a special car to drive till I was drafted in 1966. I didn't go home right after I got out of the army so mom had my rust free, dent free, Starfire, with a rebuild short block, and new paint, hauled off to the dump. I still have the title somewhere. Wish I could post a picture.

He has just awesome stuff and everyone of them you have shown us of his are just out of this world. I love his stories and his trunk treats in each car. I have asked you before Lou I would to have you interview and show us that 1970 Plymouth Wagon Woodie he has back there in the back. I have been interested in seeing and hoping he and you will show us. I love those Plymouth wagons and especially with the wood and that dark burgundy color it has just sets it off. Looks Like a Plymouth Fury Sport Suburban and I had one only a 1974. Thanks Lou for sharing this car is a true treasure and so is the owner!

Hi, Lou! It was a bit of a surprise for me to see this one in Frank's collection. I know he concentrates mostly on Mopars and I didn't think he even had any GM vehicles. But spectacular is definitely the word for this Oldsmobile, and Lansing really did it right in 1955, especially with the Starfire 98 in those "flying colors"! Indeed, this was Oldsmobile's best year of the decade in terms of sales, and they weren't even making station wagons at the time (from 1951 to 1956), which I've always wondered why. Yes, sir, Frank sure has come a long way from failing that driver's test! I'm so grateful he was able to let us in on this one, an outstanding car from an outstanding year!

1955 was the first year Olds to have A/C outlets in the dash. The 1954s had a blower unit in the trunk and outlets in the headliner vented from the rear, which wouldn't be possible in a convertible. Also the 98 was a larger car than the 88 and Super 88. Ten inches longer, and the parking brake warning light and courtesy lights you pointed out were standard on a 98.

Thanks Jonathan that was information I was looking for. I'm assuming the term Starfire was used by Oldsmobile for convertibles as holiday was used for pillarless hardtops, celebrity for pillared sedans and fiesta for wagons.

Starfire was used on 98 convertibles in 1954-1956, but not on 88s. It came from the Starfire show car from the GM Motorama in 1953, named for the Lockheed F-94 Starfire jet. Then in 1957 the entire 98 line was called Starfire 98 and the name was dropped for 1958. It came back a few more times for special models like the 1962-66 Starfire two-door hardtop.

The air conditioning system in the 1954 Oldsmobile was an entirely different system. It had the refrigeration unit in the trunk and air vents in the headliner. Olds was probably the first car to move the A/C to the front and put the vents in the dash for the 1955 model year. For sure Cadillac still had the rear A/C up until they switched to front for the 1957 model year. 1955 Buick also had a rear A/C unit. GM often used Oldsmobile as their guinea pig on new technology. In 1955 A/C on an Oldsmobile was still a rarity, even moreso on a convertible.

Have to admit the 55 GM model year was fill with beautiful cars. Chevrolet had the " shoe box" and Buick, Olds, and Pontiac made their cars knock out. My dad bought a Buick Special, and it will always be a " special" car me. Two tone paint, the CHROME and the lines.

My dad and his brother had a '55 Olds 88 Super Convertible with three on the tree when they were in high school and college. I vaguely remember riding in it when I was very young, but my grandfather made them sell it since they didn't have storage for it or money to do anything with it and it was beginning to go downhill. To this day they wish they'd kept it, since dad ended up having a different car restored that was in much worse shape and not nearly as valuable.

Hi NamVet68SigBn523 , Happy to read you enjoy this one :-) Regarding your suggestion on "dropping the top" sometimes when I video the top is down the whole time, sometimes the top down, and sometimes I lower the top on video to show what it looks like up and down. Bottom line, is it's all based on how the Care Taker instructs me about there car. I like the top to go up and down on camera :-) Thank you for viewing and commenting, Lou
