1955 Ford Zephyr. Master cylinder conversion Part 2. (2324)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello and welcome to Mart's Garage. My friend Geoff has two 1955 Zephyrs. This covers a job we did on the blue one. He thought there might be a problem with the brakes so we investigated. It needed new seals on one wheel. We fixed that, but couldn't bleed the brakes. These Zephyrs are notorious for brake bleeding problems. We decided to do a home brew conversion to more modern (late 1950s!) master cylinders. Follow along as we design and build a couple of adaptors and get it all back up and running. This is the second and final video, check out part 1 if you haven't seen it. I hope you enjoy the video. For the sake of all of our sanity I have left out the first 6 hours of unsuccessful bleeding footage. Thanks for joining me once again in Mart's Garage.
Mart.

    I live in Thailand and have recently sold the second car which was a Mercedes W123 saloon; a lovely car. By chance I came across a very different car for sale! It's a 1983 Daihatsu Charade which is quite rare and well-made. All original!

    Hi Martin. Thanks for browsing the back catalogue. I like those Marina coupes. I worked at Longbridge. I was an apprentice. My gaffer had a Marina 1.8 TC and I got a bollocking for getting it airborne over the bridge near the north works gate. Whoops.

    I rebuilt the braking system on my Mk1 Zephyr. I could not get the air out of the brakes no matter what I tried. The master cylinder reservoir will not take an Esibleed so that approach would not work. In the end I got the local garage to trailer it to their workshop. They could not get the air out either. The garage owner told me to get a new master cylinder even though I had found no fault in the existing master cylinder when testing it on the bench. I bought a new (reconditioned) master cylinder which he fitted and he got the system bled. I surmise that he had to rig up a system to get the air out. Ten years later ,yesterday I have just overhauled the rear slave cylinders. I have a compressed air powered suction brake bleeder and this morning I'll see if that works. I wish I had fitted long brake bleed nipples instead of standard length to the slave cylinders.

    The new cylinders bled really easily. I had good success using the eezi bleed the wrong way round and pushing fluid up from the bleed nipple at the wheel cylinders. This was on my 100E after lots of failed attempts by other means. We modified the neck on the reservoir on the zephyr so the eezi bleed would fit. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    @@MartsGarage Thank you for that information. This morning I checked that the pressure operated suction bleeder sucks ok but I have lost the bottle to keep the reservoir topped up. I found that the hex of the brake nipples is covered by the new rubber covers at the rear of the cylinders so difficult to access with a spanner. I've ordered some long brake nipples and I'll wait for my GF to be home and help by monitoring the level in the reservoir.

    I bought a new bottle (and pressure operated suction bleeder). But the mounting for the bottle will not fit into the Zephyr's reservoir. I waited until my GF was here and she operated the brake pedal. The Ford manual says that you just have to keep depressing the brake pedal until no more bubbles come out. But I did it the old fashioned way, closing the bleed nipple for each upward movement of the brake pedal. I had a problem keeping the bleed tube in place on the nipple. I should have waited for some long bleed nipples I had ordered. With ¼" more length, the dust cover and the bleed pipe would not have been fighting each other all the time. Anyway the brakes are bled now but don't seem as strong as I had expected. I'll book a French CT test (=French MOT). That includes a rolling test of the brakes, including the handbrake which is great for showing whether the brakes have been improved or otherwise.

    The finished job looks good Mart. Those Mk1 Zephyrs must have been Dagenham's first attempt at full hydraulic clutch and brakes and they couldn't have made the pipe work more awkward. You asked what is going on in my garage, not such an interesting selection as yours. I'm in to the post war "export or die" motoring, Standard Vanguard Phase 1A and a Ford Pilot V8, for the rest of world the Pilot was Ford's UK first big car after WW2, 21 stud flathead, 3 speed column shift and torque tube. I think it is similar to a 1938 sedan (Mart will know). I admit the Vanguard is a stalled restoration I don't know how to fix the drip rail and after several attempts to get professional help not come to anything since the Covid lock-down. The Pilot has had a lot of small jobs that are gradually making it a better car to drive. Most recent is the clutch judder in reverse, the last work was to replace the gearbox mounts and tighten the engine tie rods that run forward from the sump (oil pan) mounting bolts and hook over the front cross member. This has reduced the judder but not fixed completely, Anyone got any suggestions?

  • @MartsGarage

    @MartsGarage

    Hello Pat. Thanks for the interesting update. There is no cure all for the clutch judder. Often just adapting your driving style is the only option available. I get it myself and just live with it. Shame about the vanguard. Sometimes just "going out and doing a bit" will get the ball rolling again. Best to just concentrate on one small do-able job and as time goes by things will start to gather momentum. Good luck with it and thanks for watching and putting "pen to paper". Mart.

    Hello Mark. Geoff gave it a sympathetic tidy up. Anything that was serviceable was just cleaned and tidied. He did bodywork to the lower half and sprayed it himself. It looks good underneath, he did put a lot of effort in. It would be good if all the car nuts lived in the same road!
