This was a good year for blues stalwarts. Howlin' Wolf is probably my favorite blues artist, depending on how you classify Bobby Bland. Rear Window is my top three Hitchcock movies and I would say that he is my favorite director.

Another great episode Randy. Rear Window and On the Waterfront sit at the top of my 1954 movie list. I also like the little seen film Suddenly starring Frank Sinatra and Sterling Hayden. I believe Pledging My Love by Johnny Ace came out in 1954, that would be my favorite song. Earth Angel by The Penguins would be my runner-up. Enjoy your vacation. See you when you're back.

I do love Rear Window and this was a stacked year. On The Waterfront is a classic with a great performance by Marlon Brando but I don't have a copy. I do have a Johnny Ace compilation and that is a nice pick. I do have the movie Suddenly on DVD but I don't remember much about it. I may not have seen it and will have to add it to the list. 1954 had a host of great songs by blues and jump blues artists, doo wop artists and Elvis released his first singles. I'll catch your alphabet series with Glen on the road.

Good Evening Randy - This was another good year for me with regard to films. I have two of my top Hitchcock films. At No 1: “Rear Window”, with James Stewart and Grace Kelly, & at No 2: “Dial M For Murder”, with Ray Milland and Grace Kelly. At No 3: It’s Humphrey Bogart and Jose Ferrer in “The Caine Mutiny”, Dir: Edward Dmytryk. I have always enjoyed these three films and have watched them repeatedly. My other notable films are: Marlon Brando and Karl Malden in “On The Waterfront”. Not a film I watch a lot, but still a classic film of its time. I am also a fan of many film adaptations from the novels by Jules Verne. “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea”, being one of them. I have always like James Mason playing Captain Nemo. I also give mention to Fritz Lang’s thriller, “Human Desire”, with Glen Ford and Gloria Grahame, and the science fiction film “Them!”, with Edmund Gwenn. “The Bridges at Toko-Ri”, with William Holden and Grace Kelly is a good war film from this year. I do also enjoy many films starring Alastair Sim. In addition to “An Inspector Calls”, the 1946 thriller “Green For Danger” is a real treat, also stars Trevor Howard. I was on the edge of my seat waiting on your next musical (!), I though you might have gone for “White Christmas”, alas not... lol, the suspense continues... I have heard of the Ronald Howard “Sherlock Holmes” TV Series and noticed that all 39 episodes are on KZread. I will check them out. I am a huge fan of the film series done in the 30’s & 40’s with Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce. Looking forward to 1955. Have a great week and enjoy your vacation.

You have some great picks. I tried not to have two films from the same director or "Dial M For Murder" would have made the list. " The Caine Mutiny" is a great pick and I admire the film "On The Waterfront," but it is not one that I go back to, plus I don't have a copy. "Human Desire" is a good noir and I think that Glen Ford was very underappreciated for the roles he played. I have the Criterion of "Green For Danger" which is a wonderful film. "I think that "Them" is the best of the giant insect thrillers and I do have a soft spot for 50's science fiction movies. I think "A Star Is Born" might be the last of my musical picks but I have always admired James Mason's performance and he gets extra kudos for being in "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" as well. The Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies are the best but I did also enjoy the Ronald Howard TV series. I always enjoy reading your comments and suggestions.

Fantastic choices. I need to get more Dinah Washington in the collection. "On The Waterfront" has some great acting performances, especially Marlon Brando but it is a movie I don't have on DVD. I think that Big Joe Turner was so important for the coming rock and roll "Seven Samurai" is indeed a classic.

Hi Randy. Once again, I’m enjoying listening to your choices. I guessed your favourite movie as we both commented on it recently…..I have the Ronald Howard Sherlock Holmes set too. I haven’t watched them all yet but find them very entertaining. When I found the set I wondered why I’d never seen it on tv when younger but it seems that it was made specifically for American tv. Enjoy your vacation

A Star Is Born has one my favorite performances in James Mason's portrayal. It's nice that you have the Sherlock Holmes set too. I know that we agree that Basil Rathbone is the quintessential Sherlock but Ronald Howard does and admirable job. I don't remember seeing it on American television but it could be because it only lasted one season which hurt its syndication ability.

I have that Chet Baker album, I’ll have to get that out, now that you’ve reminded me.. your blues and r&b choices are great, but the dorky pop side of me ultimately wins: “Secret Love”, by Doris Day, “Rose Marie” by Slim Whitman, (I’m serious! lol), “Young At Heart”, Frank Sinatra, “Stranger Than Paradise” by Tony Bennett, and “Sh-boom”, the Chords version… my favorite films of that year are, “On The Waterfront”, “Rear Window”. Fellini’s “La Strada”, “Sabrina”, and “It Should Happen To You”, with Jack Lemmon and the great Judy Holliday.. Enjoy your vacation!

You are the second person who said they have that Sherlock Holmes set. I'm a little surprised. Seven Samurai is worth revisiting but it is a long movie. I hope your trip is going well.

I've got one album by Mose Allison, a compilation on Prestige that I thrifted for very cheap several years back, I've had that in mind to spin again lately. Do not think I have ever heard any Joe Turner. 12 episodes per season these days, sometimes it is even less lol. You may have to bend the rules about debut TV seasons only if you make it into later decades, seems to me there were certain shows that started out fair or not even that great but got better as seasons went along. Cheers!

Joe Turner was from Kansas City and songs he made famous on the R&B charts like "Shake Rattle & Roll" and "Flip Flop & Fly" became rock hits for other artists which is why he is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Since many shows had long runs, I will still only consider the debut to make it simpler. I will consider the best of those shows and not their "jump the shark" foibles or slow starts. Have a good weekend.

1954 was another good music year. The LP was really starting to hit its stride. At the rate things are going, the 1960s might be a letdown. I've never seen any of the A Star Is Born movies. Oops. For years I had considered Rear Window to be my favorite Hitchcock movie. I don't know if it still is, but I do prefer it to Vertigo. It's hard to pick favorites. So much of the enjoyment that I get from watching a movie comes from picking the "right" movie to watch at the "right" time. (There are many movies that never have a right time.) I knew a guy who served as captain at the Anaheim Disneyland's Submarine Voyage one summer in the late 1970s. He complained that the subs were not adequately ventilated and that the gasses that were passed throughout the day would accumulate in his "navigation deck." It'll be fun to start seeing more TV shows that are familiar to me as we get closer to the '60s. Like many early TV shows, I know the Falcon from its radio series. Ronald Howard's Sherlock series used to air on the third-tier PBS station in the Los Angeles television market. The show was as grainy as a 1930s British movie, but I liked it. Looking forward to 1955. Happy 4th of July & Happy Vacationing!

There were a lot of different types of music in the 50's and Elvis released his first single in 1954 although I didn't pick it. Rear Window is in the top three Hitchcock movies for me which means I love it as Hitchcock might be my favorite director. I think James Mason lifts the 1954 A Star Is Born over the others and Judy Garland does have some nice numbers to sing. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get to ride the Nautilus at Disneyland and be exposed to those gasses. The ride went under a waterfall at the beginning and that always intrigued me as a child. I don't remember ever seeing the Sherlock Holmes series on television but the DVD set does have episodes that vary as far as quality with some being a little grainy. I just ran across The Adventures of the Falcon TV series as I knew the movies with George Sanders and his brother Tom Conway as The Falcon. Thanks for watching and commenting.
