1950s Abandoned Country House Restaurant * Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House *

In this video im exploring the Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House restaurant that was first established in 1954, by the name Bonna's Cafe.
As the restaurant's success grew, several additions were constructed throughout the 1970s and in 1977, the name was changed from Bonna's Cafe to Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House.
The Restaurant was well known in Cleveland for its world class polka music and performances.
Frank Sterle designed this place to resemble his childhood home.
After Frank Sterle's death in 1986, the restaurant was taken over by Mike Longo
& Margot Glinski.
Despite the change in ownership, the restaurant continued to serve traditional Slovenian dishes and had weekly polka performance and dancing.
This building has been abandoned since 2017.
This building is in pretty good shape despite the vandalism and slight structural damage.
The restaurant looks like is currently undergoing renovations and I'm sure this place will be used again in the near future.
while exploring, I found a broken water pipe flooding the basement causing lots of damage. Hopefully they fix it soon.
Watch the end of the video for a surprise!!!!

It was a beautiful, hopping place back in the day. Frank Sterle was an immigrant from Slovenia who created his dream to have a Slovenian gostilna (tavern) in the heart of the old St. Clair Slovenian neighborhood. It started small and kept expanding. Great food. Wienerschnitzel (breaded veal), Slovenian sausage, strudel. No menus...your waitress would rattle off the menu from memory. Music by popular polka bands every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I played on that stage many a Saturday nite. When my buddy Chris Benda and I started our polka band in 1976 (I was 23; Chris was 16), Frank gave us our break by booking us at the Country House. The place was always jammed. and the dance floor full. I can still hear Frank's voice in my mind, and the sounds of the happy dancers.

That place is a maze, especially the upper floor w/the weird half-level stairs going up and down. It may seem like it was getting renovated, but I doubt it, not with the level of damage around it, especially with that foundation water damage. I tgink the uppet level was just better preserved. It's really said to see framed pictures that were cherished memories or historical stature just be left behind or tossed on the ground. Stuff like that always really encapsulates the time before and all it's been reduced to.

Such a neat yet sad place. It's sad to see all these places that were once the "life" of Cleveland just silent & now dead. It gives a feeling of loneliness & a longing to see better prosperous times to come back to not only Cleveland but for Youngstown where I'm at as well. Btw, I don't think that place is being renovated bcuz if it was that water being shut off would be the 1st thing the new owners would have done imo. But I could be wrong.

Also, you should be wearing a respirator. They look like they were actually doing Asbestos abatement. Those Tiles are actually asbestos tiles. Which is why they are being removed, and replaced with new insulation.

Your timeline is off. It was Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House as early as 1975 when my father and I first visited there. The 1977 date was - I believe - a "grand re-opening" when it was expanded from the original small establishment. "Bonna's Cafe" was the original name, BEFORE Frank Sterle bought it and reopened it as the Country House back in 1954.

Oh wow I can see why they want to renovate that place, there’s so much space on the upper floors!! It looks like a whole town up there ftw there were probably like 10 apartments being rented out up there back in the day, it’s bigger than the first floor restaurant!! Really cool, I’m sure they were nice apts back then because of the space and amount of sunlight.

It's so sad seeing things that were around years ago that had people in them and the way of life back then, I feel this sense of longing for the 150s to 1980s and even before the 1950s I feel such a connection. I'd love to have been born in those time periods and been young 🌱 I wonder when we die if we get to come back and choose rather to be born into a new person or if we can choose to go to any time periods we wish too and live in the moments that we want too?

I'm so happy that you gave me this one last look around...this is a huge loss to the Slovenian and Croatian immigrants who live in that area. Its loss will be felt for many years to come as it held a huge part in many people's hearts for past memories.
