1950 PONTIAC CHIEFTAN CATALINA HARDTOP COUPE, SILVER STREAK BEAUTY

THE FEATURE THAT STANDS OUT YET AGAIN ON PONTIACS ARE THE SILVER STREAKS LOCATED ON THE HOOD AND TRUNKLID, A STANDARD TRIM PIECE SINCE '39 AND ALWAYS IDENTIFIED PONTIACS. ALSO NOTEWORTHY IS THE AMBER INDIAN HEAD HOOD ORNAMENT THAT WAS LIT WHEN THE CAR WAS RUNNING. THIS PONTIAC HARDTOP IS ANOTHER CAR WHERE TECHNOLOGY HADN'T ARRIVED YET FOR MAKING A ONE PIECE CURVED REAR WINDOW / BACKLIGHT. SO IT'S A 3-PIECER. THIS SIERRA RED OVER SAN PEDRO IVORY PONTIAC HAD A SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE OF $2,069 AND WAS POWERED WITH AN L-HEAD 8 CYLINDER, 268 CID THAT PRODUCED 108 HORSES. A SIX CYLINDER WAS ALSO AVAILABLE WHICH WAS 239 CID AT 90 HP. WHEN TAPING THIS CAR I COULDN'T OPEN THE DOOR AND HAD TO CAREFULLY SLIP MY CAMERA THROUGH THE OPENING OF THE DRIVER'S WINDOW TO SHOW OFF THE PLUSH INTERIOR. I'M GLAD I DIDN'T DROP THE CAMERA INSIDE! I REALLY APPRECIATE THE GRILLE DESIGN, SOMBRERO WHEEL COVERS, THE CENTER DASH GRILLE, AND THE "STARS" ON THE TRUNKLID THAT EVENTUALLY SHOWED UP ON PONTIACS FOR A FEW YEARS. THANKS FOR VIEWING THIS SPLENDID PONTIAC CHIEFTAN HARDTOP COUPE.

This is what these vintage car dealerships do. They cram their inventory so close together that it's impossible to cleanly get around the whole car especially the back. But anyway, thanks for watching.

Actually Ford and Chevy created their own hardtop versions about the same time, 49 - 50. These hardtops were not an option but an upgraded model that you could order or buy right from the dealer. 1950 also saw the Dodge Wayfarere Sportabout roadster of which they only sold 2,903 hardtop units. Thanks for bringing this subject up. It was an interesting topic and I appreciate you viewing this 50 Pontiac.

Very nice bright work and paint job (I couldn't detect any over spray) and of course the interior would be flawless. In 1950 a straight 8 was still a sign of strong reliable transportation (eg. Buick, Packard, etc) and of course Pontiac did have that image Pontiac made Hydramatic an option in 1948 and by that time it was well proven by prewar Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs and of course the many applications that it was used in during the War.

@brians09challenger This is a great car! I love it. And, I'm glad you enjoyed this video and yes, these Pontiacs could have used a V-8. I like that lighted hood ornament and those snazzy silver streaks.

Those 62 & 64 Galaxies were absolutely the best Ford offered those years. Beautiful cars. Caddy, Linc, and Imp all had their own versions of what a hardtop should look like. See, the hardtop was a great looking new feature when intoduced in the early fifties so all the car makers had to jump on that ship. Eventually, like all fads, they had diminished quite a bit later on. Thanks for your comments.

Is this car currently for sale? And where is it located? My dad is looking to get a Chieftain and this one caught his eye.

@yerfdog123 Isn't this beautiful? It might still be for sale. Check out fastlane classic cars on the internet and if it's still there for sale, you'll see it. Fastlane is located in St.Charles, MO, west of St.Louis. Good luck.

Are there a lot of similarities between the 50 pontiac and 50 chevy coupe? I ask because its seems easier to find parts for the chevy and i'm told they are very close to the same. Any truth to this? I just aquired a 1950 Pontiac and need to find parts for the doors..... thanks!

Yes, there are many similarities between the Chevy and Pontiac in this era because they were no. 1 and no. 2 in the GM lineup. The corporation saves money with similar components like the body shell, chassis, and others. For finding parts, try going online to hemmings motor news under Chevy / Pontiac parts and also contact a Chevy Club member if those clubs are listed. Also look under Pontiac parts for that year. I wish you much good luck with your search and with your Chevy. Many thanks for viewing this video.

The doors, roof, rear fenders, and deck lid are much the same, but the front clip, hood, and the frame are different.

Wow. Thanks for the information. Maybe their scarcity was why I only surmised this conclusion. I was raised primarily in the '60's and even then, hardtops weren't seen in base cars. We had a '62 and '64 Ford Galaxie(the '64 with a 390) which were both hardtops. They were both 4 dr. family cars, but so pretty and sleek with the hardtop design. On the other hand I don't know of any premium cars(Caddy, Lincoln, Imperial) that even offered a HT in the '60's. If they did, I've never seen one.

A hardtop(no pillar) back in the early '50s was an option and definitely a styling statement. Almost like defying gravity! It was a status symbol in a car and I'm not sure if it was an option at all on basic cars like Ford, Chevy's or Dodges until later.
