I remember V8 Pilots from when I was a little kid. The most impressive thing was to hear one start up, standing behind the car. The twin exhausts would go bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm bmm in glorious stereo. Years later I had a pilot of my own from 1996 to 2004. Lots of fun to drive and quite good performance with its 3.6 litre engine. Worst job on it was extracting the steering box to have it reconditioned. Verging on the impossible, as the steering box was bolted to a plate that was then rivetted to the chassis. So you had to access the nuts via a space about one inch wide.

Had two Pilots, both green, first was our wedding car back in 1961, I have the original number plates on my present Ford V8 - a 2003 Explorer, and at 240,000 km is one of the most reliable cars I owned in nearly 60 years of motoring.Wish I still had a Pilot though

The Labour government in 1946 debated the importation of American (Canadian) cars , and banned the importation for any reason. Ireland on the other hand was able to continue, and got all the latest Fords . The Pilot was a sort of fill-in until the ban was lifted. It never happened, but the Pilot is still a Lovely Car.

Ford UK promoted the V8 models using their own bodyshell designs from the 30s to the 50s. Taxation laws based on horsepower always dampened the sales in the UK. The Pilot range struggled after WW2 because of this taxation. The range was dropped when the Consul / Zephyr/ Zodiacs came out using easier to make unitary bodies with no separate frame.
