1950 Chrysler Traveler Revived! Like An SUV, But Way Cooler

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On today's episode, we look at something special: an idea that might have been way ahead of its time. The 1950 Chrysler Traveler was designed to be all things to all people. It's a comfortable family cruiser that can be converted into a spacious hauler for camping trips, carrying business wares, sleeping at rest stops, and anything in between - all while hauling your canoe around on the roof rack. And the beautifully appointed interior makes a great place to relax and travel the world in.

    Now that's when cars were made of steel. That especially that one. Look at it. Born and raised in Shelton Washington. And nothing but surface rust. That's what I'm talking about!😅

    Chrysler Corporation cars were nearly rust proof until 1952. Korean War restrictions prevented Briggs, who made their body panels, from getting the good steel, then in 53, they bought Briggs and started making the panels themselves. They never regained their rust resistance, and in 57 were made of dehydrated compressed rust.

    I know Dodge and Plymouth had their versions of this! My dad had a '50 DeSoto (AWESOME CAR!) and, with the trunk (very nice sized) and the rear seat removed (yes, CARS were ACTUALLY FUNCTIONAL S.U.V.s, "modern folks!") this GREAT RIDE could haul DAMNED NEAR ANYTHING, at the time!

    A cousin had a fluid drive MOPAR in the 60s. If I remember right, you shifted from neutral up for first and then down manually for second. The transmission then shifted its self in to high when you let off the gas pedal. This could be a different version or my memory from 60 years ago could be faulty!

  • @DeadDodgeGarage

    @DeadDodgeGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Very close - it should apparently shift itself twice, once in “low” range and once in “high” range. And yep, it shifts itself when you let off the throttle. You’re supposed to wait for the “click” which is reportedly more of a clunk.

    What a cool Time Machine. Relatives have Chryslers and other cars of this era. They are attractive cars in may ways, and I am surprised by how much NOS and Reman parts are available after looking. Hunting down a proper replacement gauge, figuring out the transmission, getting the radio working may be a challenge That Chrysler is worth it.

    I had a 1949 Dodge Coronet with Gyromatic transmission. Much like this. It had a torque converter and clutch. The clutch was used to put it into gear or shift. You didn't use it at a traffic sign or signal. The.first and second gears were very low for a steep hill. Normally you put into the third and fourth gear to drive. When you get up some speed you let off the gas and it shifts to fourth gear. When you stop it automatically shifts back to third or first if you are in low range. There are solenoids that govern the shifting. There should be an opening in the hump in front of the front seat. I believe you also have a torque converter in front of the clutch. You need a technical book on the transmission to figure out just how it works.

  • @DeadDodgeGarage

    @DeadDodgeGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes we’ve been looking at the book. Well aware of letting off of throttle - the 1-2 shift is supposed to happen around 8 MPH, and 3-4 around 20? Neither happens… This one does not have a torque converter. There are enough different versions of these “fluid drive” transmissions to make one’s head spin. I have done basic voltage tests at the resistor, breaker and control circuits on the carb, and they appear to be correct. We will be diving into the control system in a future video.

My fluid drive is in op also so i drive it like a manula starting out in low gear and building speed and using the clutch to switch into high gear and then when it is rolling and the motor is winding i left off the gas and it shifts to 4th and will cruise at about 50 55 all day. Definitely will be watching for more videos on this car!!!

    @DeadDodgeGarage well proper function would alow me to start out in high gear and drive like an automatic without it stalling at stops, mine I have to use the clutch to keep it running. Mine is converted to 12v and in doing so the electronic components of the transmission are all disconnected. As for yours u may check the fluid in the torque converter there is an access hole in the center tunnel and u rotate the engine until the fill port lines up and then fill with iso 32 hydraulic fluid. Thank u for the reply and if u have an email I'd love to send u pics. I have redone my interior in black alligator 😀.
