1949 Lionel 2400 series passenger car rebuild 2400,2401,2402

Ойындар

The trucks really needed a lot of work on this one. Plus the wires leading to the trucks were all dry rotted!

Nice collection of 2400 series cars Jeremy. They're actually is pretty nice condition when compared to most of the ones available for less than $200 on-line. They're a terrific set to pulled by traditional sized steam or diesel locomotives. And terrific project to show how to bring them back to life. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Thanks Brad, before running them I wasn't sure how much I would like them. But now that they are layout ready - I love them I think they look great!

Just picked up a few of these cars at our local train show for a restoration/customization project I’ve been wanting to do. Thank you for showing me the ropes on this one. It’s going to save me a lot of time

@@TooManyHobbiesJeremy I am going to repaint them to match the train in a children’s book my son likes. I was looking for tinplates but I couldn’t find any that weren’t already restored and marked up accordingly. I needed 7 and just happened to find them in a bargain table at a show. This will be my first attempt at a project like this.

Hey Jeremy! What an excellent video. I know it was a lot of time and work, your efforts really paid off. Who cares that they’re not in perfect condition. They’re part of history, and you saved them. They’ve been around for 74 years, you would expect them to have been well loved. The patina tells a story. You’re just giving them new love. Great job! Tom

Nice work Jeremy! These are some great passenger cars that I actually own myself. I was thinking about picking up a couple extra cars for my set. Great job! These cars originally came with the steam turbine #671. 👍😎

Thank you so much for the kudos ❤️ I'm liking these green passenger cars way more than I expected to. That Pennsylvania Turbine is one interesting loco - both the full size and Lionel versions. I might have to get a prewar variant one of these days.

Thank Jeremy, you make it so easy for us to understand. But I think if you used a Dremal Wire Wheel to clean the 70 years of built up dirt from the wheels it also would if made these Iconic O27 Passenger Cars roll better and keep the lights on steady.

Hi Jeremy! I just acquired three of these 2400 series streamliner cars from eBay, a 2432 Clifton vista dome, a 2434 Newark Coach, and a 3436 Summit tail end wrap around observation car. All powder blue sides & silver roof, supposedly 1954-'58 vintage. Mostly good condition, but of the six light bulbs in the three cars three are burnt out. Where can I find these bulbs? Also on the vista dome car the coupler knuckle on rear non-roller truck is broken. In this version the magnetic de-coupler is a flat plate just behind axle nearest the coupler, not right at the coupler like my other 1957 freight set with #2018 2-6-4 steamer. Can this be fixed or just have to replace the truck? I think the shells may have been repainted in the past. All the lettering is panted over. You can see the heat stamped letters & numbers, but only if you look at it in bright light. On some of the cars some of the "Lionel Lines" logo near the roof is completely obliterated, like someone sanded the sides before painting over & never bothered paint the letters with a toothpick or something. Also the common wire for the lights doesn't go down to the non-roller truck, just ends at the rear bulb & grounds through the inner sheet metal frame. They were still using circlips to attach the trucks at that point. The couplers were different on the 2432-6 variants. The must have quit using coil de-coupler knuckles by the mid '50s. Prices are going up on these cars. My winning bid cost $81 including shipping & sales tax, $27 per car. Just now I'm seeing a single 2436 Clifton for $55 and the same set (though maybe in better condition) of 2432, 2434, and 2436 cars for a "buy it now" price of $195.

HI Terramar, that may be the longest comment I have gotten to date -bulbs - originally the cars had 2x 6 volt bulbs wired in series. If one burnt out neither would light. The wiring or sockets in yours might have been changed if you have 3 bulbs working out of 6. So you may need 14 or 18 volt bulbs (lower voltage if you run conventional control). These can be purchased from Amazon, Ebay Trainz.com, electronic suppliers, or at train shows. You will have to figure out what voltage bulb you need. -trucks - it may be easier to purchase a used truck from Ebay or Trainz.com. Their may be online postwar Lionel parts books line but I purchased the Greenberg's repair and operating manual for Lionel trains 1945-1969. It's a lifesaver. -wiring - yep-Greenberg's book shows the wiring going only to 1 truck if the car only has 1 roller. I'm guessing it was a cost saving measure. -paint - agreed it sure sounds like they were repainted. The good thing about that is if you like how they look, just leave it. If you want something different then strip the cars all the way down and repaint and add some decals. Lots of possibilities. -cost- congrats on getting a good price. The value of it is up to you. I could say wow that's cheap or wow that's expensive. If your happy with what you paid, that's all that matters.
