    What a beautiful piece of automotive history. I am very surprised at the rear ‘safety’ light. I’m betting that was more of an adornment than for safety, but if not, the car in that respect, was ahead of it’s time. The gauges in the dash remind me of 1930’ & 1940’s radio dials with chrome & brass accents. Thanks Lou & Joe for a great Monday treat!

    My German Grandma had a 49 Dodge. She always bragged that it would take a boxcar to roll it over! Always make me feel good, cause she was always 3 sheets to the wind, when she would pickup up! The look on my my moms face was to let us known to be quiet and you could see she was scared riding in the front seat. I wouldn't trade those days for nothing, but I did feel sorry for my mom riding in the front seat! Us kids felt like it was going on a scary amusement ride! I remember she carry a brick, cause the parking brake didn't work! Miss you Grandma! Thanks for giving me some memories I will never forget!

    The year was 1969. I was 17. My father had recently confiscated my 1957 Pontiac Star Chief. I saw this 1949 Dodge Coronet parked on a hill in someone's yard in Skyway, Washington. The sign read $30. It was the four door version of this car but a bit banged up. Everything on that old SOB worked except the E brake lever needed a stick to prop it up so it would hold. Lou, I bought that car and it was a bedroom on wheels. I never slept in it of course. Heh, heh. Thanks for the memories Lou!

    Brought back so many memories! Just like the first car my dad and I restored back in 1976, except ours was a bronze color. It was a one owner and only had 53,000 miles. Had seat covers on it from day one, but the pot metal, including that big trunk ornament, the rear taillights and the hood ornament were pitted and a bear to rechrome. When we were done, the Dodge dealer in Woodland, CA, Electric Motor Company, came and bought it to display on their showroom floor.

    Dear Lou and Joe, I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and was born in 1951. Your car is the answer to a question I raised for myself months ago. Let me explain. Between 1960 and 1962, I had a classmate in elementary school, whose father had a car exactly like yours, including the seawater green color. Despite being only 8 y.o., I already could identify cars, and knew it was a Mopar. As schoolyear in Brazil is split in two periods, february/june and august/november, in 1963 I moved to another school and district, losing contact. We used to walk home (1/2 mile only) together after classes. As the boy lived half-way, I would see the Mopar parked in his house, with the rear and left side visible under the sunlight. Recently, I remembered the car and started a research to find out more. As I was not sure about the brand, I looked first after Plymouth, which was not the case, since its club coupe has vertical side pillars. Then, Dodges showed the similarity I was looking for. But I continued and went to Desoto Club coupé, which looked larger, and its rear middle brake lights are double, not single. Now I see your car and my doubt is over - another 1949 Dodge Coronet Club Coupé Island Green! Question answered! Still speaking about cars, our lady Principal of the elementary school drove a bulbous and enormous 1949/50 Nash Airflyte 2-door sedan, light brown color with green rayban windows. I used to compare it with the German flying Graf Zeppelin! Sometimes I stepped beside the car and looked inside, but, boy, it was difficult for a small kid of 8, even at the tip of my toes!

    I haven't been out to the Chrysler nationals in several years. I'm due for a trip, maybe in 2021. My family had my grandfather's hand-me-down 1950 4-dr Dodge Meadowbrook(I think) Sedan - a big black car - from '58-'60. These videos are memory helper. Fluid drive was really for taxicabs and similar, where you could start and stop on relatively flat surfaces and come to speed slowly without holding down the clutch. We had it on a '53 Coronet as well, which we had from '60 - '64. I've seen a picture where the Trumans are setting out in one of these on a cross country road trip on their way, again I think, out of the White House. I remember watching my parents drive these things, and contrasting with our main cars, which had auto trans and power steering. These were bears to parallel park on city streets, and maneuver. Poor Harry - imagine having to navigate one of these, and putting up with Bess to boot. Nimble, they were not - the cars or the Trumans. But I always not-so- secretly harbor a fantasy of driving and owning one, just for the challenge and their relative simplicity. (Note: further research indicates that the Trumans drove off from the White House in a Chrysler, not a Dodge, and owned a string of Chrysler products until his 1972 death. But he really did drive off from the White House - former presidents in those days had no Secret Service protection.)

    @@loucostabile These cars were during K.T.Keller's reign as chairman of Chrysler. He wore a hat and wanted the roofline to accommodate them. Even in 1950, these were dated compared to Hudson, Studebaker, and Willys. But for some reason, these cars have always looked "friendly" maybe because they resemble the cartoon cars of my childhood. Shortly after this car was built Chrysler would introduce the "Hemi" and the "Forward Look" by Virgil Exner. When I was 15 years old (1971) a maroon `50 Wayfarer roadster would drive by our bus stop for school. It didn't look fast, it just looked ...cool for some reason.

    Hi, Lou! 1949 ushered in the first postwar designs at Chrysler, and while Ford and GM were issuing rounder and sleeker designs, Chrysler's then CEO K.T. Keller insisted on high boxy designs because he wanted passengers to be able to enter, sit down and exit while wearing a hat. Joe's Dodge may not have looked exotic in its time, but I have no doubt it stands out today, especially in that Island Green shade. BTW, I've always wondered why this body style is called a "club" coupe.

    A good one Lou. The badge on the body says fluid drive which would mean it has some sort of automatic transmission yet there is a clutch pedal. Anyone know what that is?

  • @marciowagner7808

    @marciowagner7808

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, Robert Gerber. Fluid-Drive means two different equipments with the same name, which causes a lot of confusion. First, in 1939, both Chrysler and Imperials models were launched with the Fluid-Drive coupling between engine and transmission, which eliminated the solid flywheel for an oil coupling, eliminating the need for pressing clutch pedal under normal use. It was necessary only to change forward and reverse speeds. Therefore, the stress of driving was much reduced, mostly in adverse conditions, such as up a hill - no need to pull and release hand brake, no need to use clutch to start, as any automatic car of today. In 1940, it was added to Desoto and Dodge models, but Plymouths never received it, as low-price entry cars. This is the badge you saw in this very car. Second, in the late 1940's, Chrysler launched a semi-automatic Fluid-Drive 4 speed transmission. One again, Plymouth was kept out. It had two forward posiitions: 1&2 and 3&4 speeds. To start the car from zero, you pressed clutch and shifted one of the two options. It was automatic only in the fixed position, 1-2-1 or 3-4-3. Due to the mess to identify which is which, Chrysler used the "Gyromatic" denomination in the Dodge Cars, being the first ones the 1949 models, which is not the case of this one.

    @@loucostabile Hey Lou , per wikipedia Fluid Drive is the trademarked name that Chrysler Corporation assigned to a transmission driveline combination which replaced the flywheel with a hydraulic coupling and performed the same function as a modern torque converter, only without torque multiplication. A conventional clutch and three- or four-speed manual transmission was installed behind the fluid coupling:
