Great video mate. Iv got a D4 30 A . They were much like the 7 U model but before the D 4 C model. It was made in Mexico in 1954 and less than a hundred were bought to Australia. Surprising how many little changes were made during a production run of a series. Ours dropped a tooth on the bullwheel in the final drives about 40 years ago and it split the whole backend in half and it took us nearly five years before we eventually found another that had the same pattern bellhousing. They look the same but they are just a little bit wider and won't match up with any of the previous serial numbered versions. Iv just spent the last two days welding and turning down all of the precombustion chambers on her, one had a pin hole in it and was blowing back thru the radiator. She had been sitting for nearly 15 years without running and all I did was put some fuel in the pony motor, it fired after turning over about two times and let the main motor spin for about a minute, cracked the throttle open and she fired straight away. She also has a genuine Cat blade, Cat tree arm and Cat three shank rippers. Spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on her from when I was seven years old up until she was parked up all those years ago. One time back in the mid seventies, my dad started the pilot motor, it fired up and the crankshaft snapped right where the flywheel bolts on. He reckons it ricocheted around the floor pedals then shot up over the tracks and off into the scrub. I also own a 17A D7. Without a doubt the nicest sounding motor Cats have ever made. 14 litre, 4 cylinder with a whopping great turbo charger feeding it air that you can hear whistle from two miles away. She also dropped a tooth on her bullwheel in her final drives and is now waiting for me to put her back together with another bullwheel and intermediate pinion which also got chewed. Was lucky to have found the broken tooth after changing the oils in the finals, stuck my finger up in the drain hole to see if there were any metal filings left over and that's when I felt something that moved. She hadn't been making any clicks or clunks or whining noises at all and had probably been like it for years before I bought it. It's motor was rebuilt in 1973 and it was parked in an old hayshed soon after and has less than 200 hours on it. It also has a cat blade but a three shank ripper set up made by Stanton. Very heavy duty and very heavy. All up weight she goes around 27 tonnes. She's a big, big heavy hunk of women.

In 1965 my parents owned a home adjacent to the right-of-way for the new Interstate Highway 94. Hours of entertainment for us small boys when they constructed this stretch of freeway. Saw lots of Cat "crawler tractors" pulling towed scrapers!! The smoke and noise from them then is nothing like it today! ALL the equipment barked loudly and left huge clouds of black smoke then!

The very first Dozer I ever had a serious try on, was one of these. ( back in 1964.) Been a very long time since I saw one of these double ended ploughs...my late grandfather used to tow one behind his steel wheeled Fordson tractor.

Hi, Folks. Sorry but I don't think it is a 1941 model. The larger round outer track frame bearings came in with the 5T series D4 in 1945 and the air cleaner was moved from under the hood to being mounted on the back of the firewall in front of the operator like that one is with the later 6U - 7U series D4s in about 1947 - '48. Nice video of a great crawler though. Thanks for uploading it. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

That really doesn't make any sense to me. The main clutch (engine) has to be connected to the transmission. Are you saying to engage the main clutch and then use steering clutches? I don't know anything about Cats but aren't both tracks being engaged regardless when you have the engine clutch engaged and transmission in gear. The track clutches disengage each track individually when you want to turn. At least, i think that is how it would work. Or else you are saying have both tracks disengaged when you start the tow and engage during. Although what is the difference? Any other equipment with a manual transmission and manual clutch (no tracks) you would do it the other way so....???

I was watching the operator and he is wearing out the steering clutches fast. I don't think he has been operating very long. It is the same with a car clutch, all the way in or all the way out. He was riding the steering clutches and over steering to boot. I would not let him run my dozer until he learned how to run one properly.

@@robertboyd3863 I honestly don't remember making these comments since it was over a year ago and to revise my post to be fair and watching the video again, I was a little hard on the operator but I still stick by not riding the main clutch and steering clutches. I have replaced them before on that vintage of dozer and it is not an easy job to replace them so I am picky about how the machine is operated. I have 40 years experience off and on with this equipment. You don't know me so you don't know what I know....

As far as I could see he was simply releasing a steering clutch to let it straighten up , something you do all the time . I had an old AC HD9 with the 4-71 engine, a much better machine than the old Cats, and so much easier to work on .

Deas Plant.

@ADITADDICTS

@KStewart-th4sk
3 жыл бұрын
@robertboyd3863

No idea why, if a wheel tractor you wouldn't have steering clutches to use, I never used the steering clutch to start one

@@richardallison8745 As a kid in the 40's I first got to play with my Uncles Cat 10. in the 90's I had and used a D4 slightly older style than this one, also a couple D2's yes have changed steering clutches final drives etc, nothing worse to work on than a Cat. As far as I could see he was simply releasing a steering clutch to let it straighten up , something you do all the time . I had an old AC HD9 with the 4-71 engine, a much better machine than the old Cats, and so much easier to work on . My pony motor didn't have an elect start and it had a loader on it, that was a real joy to start LOL
