It had the best and simplest steering system on tracks, the steering wheel just moved the front bogie left or right which bent the tracks so the vehicle turned left or right. No need for any differential or sluice braking. Brilliant idea and very fast.

The last time I saw a universal carrier a.k.a. bren carrier was of all places the Australian war memorial and museum in Canberra Australia even though small I was quite impressed. widely used particularly in Northwest Europe 1944/5

My Uncle was in Carriers and coincidentally the 15th Lowland Division. He maintained his Carrier did not have a tow Bar. There were fitted later in the War and some Carrier never got theirs.

I've wondered why the U.S. Army didn't adopt the bren carriers. I thought it was because they had jeeps. And armored tracked version that could probably carry more than a jeep, but never saw a explanation as to why the U.S. never used them as far as I know.

Probabaly just a matter of logistical concerns and because they already had the M3 half track

The ones used for towing always had them from the beginning, for pulling AT guns

It still amazes me that they put the V8 engine in the middle of the “Truck Bed.”

Thanks. I was wondering. It looks from your perspective views that a half squad of armored infantry could manage to cram into a Carrier with most of its gear. Pintle mounted Bren would naturally reduce crew to three-four maximum. Steering by flexing the tracks is an idea Walter Christie pursued to distraction. In the Carrier, it works. The USA produced a larger vehicle, the T16 Carrier, with two full horst suspension bogies. The Australian Carrier variants, particularly the 2pdr and 3" mortar variants*, showed that necessity in the mother of innovation. *These were slightly more practical than their British counterparts by some standards. The Australian 2pdr version had 360 degree traverse and the 3" mortar version could fire from the vehicle instead of needing to dismount the mortar before firing. The wisdom of using a Carrier like an armored assault vehicle is perhaps questionable. But needs must when the Devil calls, and all that.

My Father was an anti-tank gun commander this was his type of vehicle used to tow the gun I think I see a red lion unit badge have you any knowledge of its history? Dad was in The Argyles and took the gun all the way to the Rhine crossings

This was the color they put on them when they were hunting Tiger tanks. They would replace the bren gun with a boyes anti tank rifle and give it a new paint job to confuse the Germans into a lethally complacent torpor.
