1930s Mantle Clock Westminster Chimes
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I thought I'd share our clock's chiming at 12o'clock with you and give you a view of the chiming mechanism at the back. It chimes on each quarter hour and we were told that it may have an 1930s English movement but we aren't sure. The face and the glass may not be original but the cabinet is in perfect condition. Comments and any useful information about our clock are most welcome!

That 1930's clock is probably worth a fortune today, especially since it actually works. It truly sounds beautiful.

I have a mantle clock from 1912. It is a heirloom from my grandma that had passed away several years ago. I had it repaired recently and love hearing the chimes again. My grandma had several grandfather clocks as well and I'd hear them chime all the time in her house

I remember visiting my grandparents and hearing this growing up. I didn’t think much of it then, but it’s really so pretty
I miss you, Grammy and Pappy 💕
These chimes sound so beautiful that I had tears for some time. Yeah, I literally cried because it’s too beautiful for me to handle.
Oh wow, I love this! It takes me right back to being at my grandmothers house :)

Beautiful little gem of a wind-up!! It's got a personality all its own. Never more than 15 minutes from reminding you it's here, and every hour what great mechanical condition it's in!!
Oh, I remember my grandmother had one of these, and I loved to hear it chime at the top of the hour. No wonder I enjoy visiting London and hearing Big Ben.

I have my grandfather clock in my living room my dad build for my mom birthday. The clock is 36 years old it works.
i remember someone opening the back and letting me watch, was a long time ago...... Brought back some Memories thank you for sharing :)
I just bought a very old 'Napoleon Hat' mantel clock with Westminster chimes. [ The same melody in this video] The clock cost me £40.00 on a Facebook selling page. Have had to persevere as old clocks don't like being moved. In short, after 4 days it's in time and strikes on the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and the hour. The sound takes me back to my childhood and Grandmother's house back in the late 50s. I don't turn the chimes off - to hear them at 4am for some reason is bliss. Am glad I was able to get it going as a local clock repair Co. will service such clocks - their prices START at £690.00 + tax @ 20%.
@jazzman1626

Wow! That’s vastly over priced. If the clock was worth thousands of pounds maybe, but £690 + VAT takes it up to £828 for a 40 quid clock?
Isn’t it funny how age changes your views! I remember my grandma having a similar clock and in my early years thought it was ugly and for “old” people, and that damn tick tocking! I’d love to own that clock now! Such a beautiful thing, and that damn tick tocking........….......a wonderful peaceful warm sound that eases away all my stress and worries.
When I was just a young boy my grandparents had a clock like this on there mantle that had the same chime. We lost them some years ago now and the clock stopped working long ago. But is still in the family (tho sadly not with me). Hearing this again after all these years.............. I just don't have the words. I miss my grandparents so. And the sounds of that clock!

Great, very stout chimes. Good tuning, I love it.
That’s a smiths enfield movement. Great little clock!
My dads is from the 1930s looks identical to this, it now sits on my mantle peace, when he was alive he had it refurbished when it chimes I think if him as he loved his clocks, I love watching the insides work and the hammers chiming away its a work of art
great tick and chimes thnkyou
I have five mantel clocks, one grandfather clock and six regulator clocks. At the top of the hour it sounds like a cathedral because they are all westminster chime.
Wow you kept it in really good condition for it to be over 85 years old
I just bought one similar to this yesterday at an antique store. Mine has the exact same movement and hands. It even sounds similar to this one.

Very Good Clock.
What a beautiful clock. I'd love to own one.
beautiful!
We have one of these it belonged to my great grandmother
That sound is so pure and rich!! What a treasure! I have a mechanical Strasbourg Manor wall clock, and while it keeps good time and looks nice, I don’t care for the sound of its gong. It’s just a metallic clang.
I have always love the westminster chimes melody as a kid, on. I even like the bong at the end of the chime on the hour because it actually sounds welcoming vs certain ones sound really haunted to some people as if I were in a Halloween themed setting. Where as this one would sound very happy to see me. But generally for me, no clock chime melody or ring is ever bothersome to me.
They knew how to make clocks back then.
Very nice
very nice clock
Love the clocks face
My brother gave me on of these and as I left his house he shouted at “ahr lass it’s broken you can fix it” well I never did, too much money and sat waiting for a slack month for me to find money, a clock repairer and time. 18 months later my beautifully generous, highly energetic, competively sporty brother was taken from me at 56 years of age in just less than 20 minutes alone on a kitchen floor. No time to say I love you. So his clock is sat here ticking and chiming but I never asked him what the three different holes are for. Can you advise. Ps to all readers when you kiss someone goodbye do it as though it’s the last time, hold them breath in their smell and feel their hair in your face. You might never get chance again
@trustyoldiron5416

I'm sorry to hear that. But Hopefully I can help a bit. The "3 holes" you're referring to are in the face of the clock I assume. These holes are where the winding key is inserted for the 3 different springs: the left one is usually the Westminster chime (like this video) the center is usually the timepiece's spring and the right one is usually the hour chime (also like this video) I'm not a clock repair expert but I've repaired a couple over the years. If you've got any other questions feel free to ask!

I don’t quite recall where our old Westminster Clock came from, if indeed I ever knew. It was best not to enquire when things just turned up at 80 Moffat Street. Its case was a rich brownish red wood, quite elegant and it took pride of place on the mantle top of the highly ‘Zebo’ black lead polished fireplace, surrounded by a pair of equally polished brass vases made out of shell cases salvaged from some bomb site or other. The clock went...sometimes, and sometimes it didn’t. My patient dad, who wasn’t really my dad, found a simple formula to make it work, namely he put two pennies under the back right hand foot and I watched him, tongue sticking out just so to aid him, do this job time and time again with monotonous regularity and infinite patience. Finally, so placed, the pendulum would fall imperceptibly forward and begin to gently rock with a rhythmic almost hypnotic tick.. tock.. tick.. tock. Slowly the ultra thin blue black iridescent hand would sweep round the white mother of pearl face and on the half hour would chime most sweetly and melodiously; ding dong ding dong, doubling up on the hour, followed by dong dong according to the hour. Dad would then sit back in his fireside chair, pick up his nightly paper, cast a disproving look at mam, and adopt a mission accomplished look of satisfaction. Whilst his beloved clock moved, all was well with his world. I hear it still for it periodically echoed through the house, throughout my childhood. But let’s not get too complacent here, not just any old penny would do, those pennies had to be exactly right. I can still see them. Two frozen in time images of a bald headed and heavily bearded George the 5th were the only coins thin enough to do the trick. Those pennies were almost black, the surfaces worn smooth by a million hands and so therefore, that much leaner than their newer brasher younger counterparts. The clock and those two coins were made for each other. The next day when the gas went out, mam took the coins and shared them equally between the two meters. Dad would go berserk. Now bearing in mind neither of my parents had a watch till they became dirt cheap in the 1950’s, so in order to know the hour, one of us kids would be despatched up to their bedroom to bring down the old alarm clock with the brass bell on the top and with the harsh intrusively loud and much quicker tick tock! Inevitably, as the day ended, dad tamped down and secured the fire safely behind the all embracing fire guard, turned the heavy black key in the equally black lock and drew the bolts top and bottom on the back door, turned out the lights and wearily climbed those ultra steep stairs and made for bed. When he’d undressed down to his underwear, sat down on the edge of the bed and took off his shoes, did he go to pick up and wind the alarm clock for his morning call, only to realise it was downstairs! As a sign of respect to him, as soon as the meters were emptied, mam would put those two coins back on the shelf for his attention that night. I recall once, he bought home from his work some super strong industrial glue which had to be melted on the fire and he joined the coins together for what he was sure would be forever. I think Shakespeare must have known our mam for the next time the gas went out.....needs must when the devil drives.....

Amazing!!! thank you!!!
I have a clock with an identical movement. Yours is made by the German firm Petersen, as is mine. Another company, Fontenoy produced a very similar movement, virtually identical in fact. For a clock from the 1930s it is a good quality clock. (And its a little out of beat btw)
A friend of mine had a clock like this and I remember it going off all the time when we were in her living room

that’s a bit pricey for this clock. it’s a common german made ww2 era clock, labeled foreign as during and after the war the imported clocks from germany were labeled foreign. you could find a better deal, they are worth about $60, you can find some from $5 - $40 but if you really want to go ahead.
