That view of the Golden Gate Inlet with the ferry going by is amazing. It looks so empty without the Golden Gate Bridge.

I Can Only Imagine the amazing crispy beautiful aroma of the air back then, and the newness of everything. and then the Elegance of people. and you could probably hear the birds much more clearer than you can today. how amazing it would be just to have a 24-hour visit in San Francisco to back then.❣😌

I assume you are joking. The air back then was absolutely foul, and this film shows that. Take a look at all the smokestacks belching black smoke, both on the ships and on the buildings that you see as the camera pans the San Francisco skyline (go to the 2:05 mark and play from there). Air quality didn't get good until we enacted laws requiring smokestack scrubbers, and put catalytic converters on cars. Also, while there were fewer people and therefore fewer cars, the machines that were in use back then were incredibly noisy. These days we have electric cars which are almost silent, but back then cars backfired (a LOT), and didn't have very effective mufflers. Public transportation was noisy (I used to commute on the "El" in Chicago in the 1950s and couldn't hear the person sitting next to me).

I was born in Sf and went to several places that are no longer around!

That's got to be the most well preserved 1930 footage I've ever watched!

Thanks! I've transferred a lot of B&W 16mm amateur movie footage from 1928 to the late 1930s. Most of it is in as good shape as the day it was shot, except for the dirt. Cleaning the film only gets rid of a little of the dirt, but digital technology gets rid of the rest, and also lets me stabilize it, sharpen it, and do other restoration.

This footage allowed a glimpse of 'yesteryear' in my hometown. I was not born yet so I enjoyed it even more better. Thank you very much! Good filming.

wow, the waterfall at sutro , i do not rember that ever being there , i was born in 1963 and lived there untill 2000, maybe it was there still when i was little and i just don not remember, thank you so much for posting this

Wow! I never knew that there once was a waterfall cascading down from Sutro Heights back in the 30's. The only one that I ever knew of was the one that was right behind the Sutro Museum when they had that skytram in the '50's and '60's. It's definitely very impressive looking. I wonder how it worked?

It was the Great Depression lol there were more homeless than ever and the unemployment rate was 25% lol everything is in cycles, it’s been worse and its been better

1930 was the start of the depths of the depression. The homeless were everywhere, even if this ancient film doesn't show them. For those who think they want to go back to that time, be careful what you wish for. ---a SF native.

I do digital restoration for a living, so I was able to remove dirt, stabilize, and make other improvements. The original transfer that I did over a decade ago, and which I originally posted, was almost unwatchable. Also, to make the jerky pans smoother, I used software to add additional synthesized frames between each frame of the 15 frame-per-second film. This gives it the feel of video which does indeed make it seem unreal. You are quite perceptive to have noticed that; most people do not.

Amazing footage of SF without either the Golden Gate or Oakland Bay bridges. It's hard to believe how quickly the city rebuilt from the 1906 earthquake, only 24 years before these images? 🤔

+Jackie Phillips Actually it is from a 78 rpm collection, never published on CD or LP AFIK. I'd have to look up whether it was Goodman. Sure sounds like him, but I'd have to go back and check.

+John Meyer Great! Would love to know. He and Glen Miller had similar sounds, but Benny Goodman had more of a jazzy, be-bop sound. I don't recognize the song, though.

I wouldn't mind going back then but only for 24 hours just to experience what it was like. hopefully I would have my cell phone in my pocket, 📱 I wonder if it would work? probably not but at least I could share some pictures and junk, but probably not also.😮 but if I could remember everything then I would probably try to warn people I would meet but then they might think that I'm nuts. 🌿🙄 so I think I would just enjoy the 24 hours as it comes but I wonder what they would think about my tight jeans? 😲😉

The music is "With You Anywhere You Are" played by Irving Fazola's Dixielanders. It was recorded on October 19, 1945, much later than you would think, given the style and orchestration. Jack Palmer wrote "With You Anywhere You Are," probably in 1945. He also wrote or co-wrote Everybody Loves My Baby; Hi Ho Trailus Boot Whip; I've Found a New Baby; I'll Take the South and Old Joe's Hittin' the Jug. I designed and built my own "frame accurate" transfer system by removing the shutter from a Japanese Eiki 16mm projector, capturing the result, and then removing the "pulldown" frames. I subsequently ran the capture through my restoration software which removes dirt, stabilizes the frames, and sharpens the results. I surfed at Ocean Beach in 1964 and some of the pier was still there.

Other than the internet it seems they had just about everything we have today. Makes you realize how little we’ve advanced in 100years outside social media and internet. The biggest change in human civilization was from 1830-1930. Nothing even comes close to the advancements in the 19th century. 20th century was meh. 21st century is looking grim.
