193 miles in 39 hours without sleep - West Highland Way Double by MTB Solo & Unsupported
Спорт
Riding the West Highland Way Double by MTB - 193 miles and 6,718m elevation in one ride! Milngavie to Fort William and back to Milngavie again by mountain bike in 39 and a half hours. There were some fantastic trails in there but also a lot of hard climbs and some brutal weather near Fort William. Without a doubt the biggest adventure I've taken on! I decided to do it solo and unsupported too as a challenge for myself to see if I could cope - it definitely made things harder but I don't regret it!

That was some effort well done making this video will inspire fellow mountain bikers to challenge themselves and give this a go .. take care and all the best
Hey Gav. Your sister told me about your plans a wee while back and they sounded mental back then! So good to see you get out there and put together this total epic. Some mad riding on those high pressure tyres. You were making it look way easier that I know it would be. Total respect 🙌

Hello! Yes I think she was worried I'd end up in hospital 😂 Absolutely, the bike was so different to usual - especially with the bag on the bars, the balance point was so much further back! The devil's staircase in reverse was the most interesting with the seat up full!
Im sat watching this contemplating doing it over 2 or 3 days and just feeling bad about myelf seeing you do both ways in one sitting .This has to be one of the besy vids on YT about riding the WHW . Massive Kudos and a great vid .. I did get worried when you started sluring ;)

Cheers, glad you enjoyed it! It's a great route with some really good descents on it too - you'll have a blast on it! The mental fatigue definitely started hitting coming into Glencoe on the return 😂
What an awesome effort, well done sir.
Massive kudos !!! Very watchable video too! Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Epic take my hat off too you, well done on completion of that spectacular ride. 👏👍👍🏴🏴

Flipping epic!! 🙌 loved this vid 👍🤟
That was awesome to watch and well done Gav what an achievement!! Superb.
Great riding and series of videos!
Great video, not going to lie I was sore just watching it so you must have been in bits at the end. Well documented and informative too.

Cheers! Definitely, my legs were pretty burnt out but I didn't have any blisters/aches/pains which I was expecting to have. The main thing was the mental fatigue towards the end - I was shaking/shivering all over after finishing despite it being 20 degrees. I went into Tesco like that to get dinner and got asked if I was alright by the staff 😂
What an achievement, loved the video! Well done fella!
Well done young man, an amazing achievement indeed that’s both brilliant & bonkers!
Fantastic adventure. Well done.
Great video and an amazing achievement.
Well done.That’s a great achievement.
That was an incredible effort. There are so many techy and steep sections on this route. I've done a couple of 100 miler sportives on the road that felt tough- but this is on an entirely different level.
I did this one way in a day and was brutal. Well done man!
Thats mad! Well Done man !!
Some effort mate very well done. On a Mega as well!!
Unbelievably good effort! Well done, sir! 😁
Great vid Gav, you're a beast!

Cheers Andrew! Loving the big days at the moment - keen to get another big trip lined up soon!
Cany believe this was done on a nukeproof mega of all bikes. Not a lightweight xc whip or even hardtail but full blown enduro. I doth my hat to you sir that is some effort. Fun on the descents I can imagine, the climbs not so much 😂
Very impressive and interesting to watch. I'm super surprised that you had such long runs without running into hoards of people
Huge respect.
You're off your head - kudos on the gate opening montage
You are a legend.
Beast! Some effort! 👊🏻💪🏻
Gav, Amazing achievement and informative video. You’ve definitely wet my appetite to do the WHW some day. But hats off on the up and back in a oner !!! Hardcore ...💪👍👏

Cheers Ian! It's getting a lot more popular these days for mountain biking which is great to see. The hike a bike sections can be a bit long at times but worth it for the great views and singletrack descents! It's a brilliant route!

Fantastic that mate well done ,but totally mad 😂,
I doff my cap to your herculean journey. I've did that over 2 days on a HT and it was brutal, you made it look so easy. Let's get you signed up to do the ScotDuro22 lol
Raising the bar for whw mtb challenge 💪👌👏👏
Brilliant effort mate, well done. I would have skipped Conic on the way back as ye has done 2 miles off course lol ATB Martin

Cheers! It definitely would have made life a lot easier! There's a couple points there are roads running next to the WHW path but stuck to the path all the way - felt like I'd be cheating myself otherwise!
Great video. Nice Channel mate .. subd
Cracking edit. You made that look easy. They gates are horrible 😂

They are indeed! They were especially draining on the return - momentum killed every hundred metres!!
Pretty hardcore! That ride would be very difficult to manage my type 1 diabetes lol
subbed :D that was impressive
hat off!
Well done but a question on kit what tyres did you run, width etc and any inserts
@gavallan2020
2 жыл бұрын
Sure, so on the back I had a minion semi slick 2.3 with an insert and a Michelin wild enduro 2.4 on the front also with inserts. The back was very fast rolling but the front definitely wasn't optimal with the wild enduro, would be much better off with something more XC but I couldn't justify buying a full XC tyre setup for the one ride!

@@gavallan2020 thanks very much. Planning it in summer and wanted too have ideas on what kit to run. Seems inserts are a must

@@kieranmann1073 all the best for it, its a great route! I'd recommend the semi slick for the back tyre then something fast rolling like a crossmark for the front. I also upped my pressures a lot to reduce the rolling resistance - I was around 45psi. About triple my usual pressures but it stopped punctures and it was speedy!
Who cares.
Hello Great video! I’m looking to do this one way next year for a mental health charity however I’m a fairly novice rider… Do you have an email/Twitter account I could send a couple of questions to?

Cheers! I do but not keen on sharing my email via the public comments - if you comment them here I'd be more than happy to answer though?

You know as I was typing I wondered if that would be the case given it’s a public forum What bike would you recommend for this? I’m looking to do this in May and although I’m fairly fit, it’s a fitness I’ll need to work on Did you train for this or do you have any recommendations on building towards this fitness wise?

@craigstobie7328 So you would need a mountain bike, either a hardtail or full suspension. Both will be fine but a full suspension will be more comfortable given it's a long time in the saddle. In terms of training, I didn't have a specific programme I followed as such - I've always mountain biked a lot so I'm on the bike the majority of weekends through the year. The key thing for a ride like this is working on getting the base endurance in place - so long, slower paced rides are good for this. In the run up to doing this I started doing longer rides (~10 hours) a few weekends in a row then had two weeks off altogether to recover before going for it. Hopefully that's a help! Oh and also, Mark Beaumont has a great GCN book called Endurance which is worth a read - it'll help a lot with the prep/training.
