My Maternal Grandfather's Overland Whippet often came up in my mother and father's conversations when I was growing up. That car was loved! For the longest time, my car parts and pieces box had one of those lovely old screw-on hubcaps in it. The hubcap has gone AWOL, sadly. I hope the project goes well!

Right on Jonathan. That's a sign that you're supposed to work on that car. It fired off right away and it wants to be back on the road running again. That must be one strong little engine in it. Sitting for 38+years than doing that. OH YEAH it's a winner.

A friend of mine has a 1930 Overland Whippet (as they were called in the UK) 4-door saloon/sedan. He says that the later engines have thrust bearings in them and are pretty much unbreakable and the earlier ones don't and can suffer end float like this. Sod's law being what it is, apparently 1929 was the change-over year so this one might or might not have thrust bearings. If it doesn't it might need some machining to take them, if it does then apparently they are easily available and not expensive in the UK, so they'll probably be dead easy in the US, being their country of origin. The nearly 90 year old engine in his car has never been apart as far as it's possible to tell and runs just fine though it isn't what you could call refined. The down-side, from his pint of view, is that his missus likes the car more than she likes him, so he never gets to drive it unless it needs tlc. Having said that, it is her family car so it is appropriate, and nice that another generation of the family that bought it new is still enjoying it, and using it all-year round just as it was designed to be...

The pot metal in the carb gets really brittle with time. S4D parts are pretty hard to find. The last one I did ,i had to make an aluminum top on the float bowl. The carb itself was really brittle until an older guy showed me how to cook the carb in an oven, normalizing the pot metal .That car really does want to get moving again, it even closed the hood by itself to hurry you up.

The way that thing started up, and the wings came down I figured the wheels would jump on the spindles, and it would take off like Herby or Christine! Great video Jonathan!

That whippet is so grateful for the touch of a respectful mechanic it jumped for joy!

Congratulations gentlemen, l do believe that glass you spoke of Jonathon is in fact at least 3/4 full, l still think this would be a great car for your good lady wife to take to car shows, painted to match the Elcar , what a winning combination that would be. There's a blue 1930 Whippet for sale on Hemmings for $16,900. It's in pretty nice shape. This is a great little car, it wants to drive again. I think you'll have fun with it. Linda and I send our best.

My first thoughts about this car were to toss a mid '80s 302 in it along with the rear end and a mustang 2 front end on it and make a rat rod out of it, however hearing it start on the first turn of the key and see the hood shut on it's own means that she wants to run once more on her own the way that she was made. I am not a purist by any way shape or form however, it needed to be saved and rebuilt, thank you for at least bringing it to our attention so that someone hopefully can help you save her

You are on the mark. I thought "ratrod" to start, but that car is crying to be put back together. That little engine still has work to do. Scarcity dicates value in these old cars, this one isn't rare. The value will be riding around in it.

Just my two cents of course but, It is quite refreshing to see a young adult paying attention and learning how to use his hands and head as well.I think the luck with Noah is like when you take the young ones fishing they always seem to catch more fish.Not trying to sound like a used car salesman but, What have we got to do to get Noah into that car. My Dads first car driven to school in 1938. Lots of stories told through the years I pictured it like this one but at the time it was only 9 years old. He and his friends paid a few bucks for it, took it home and got it running as a project. They all had fun with it , took turns driving it.

I love getting home from work, grabbing a beer, and have a first start video waiting for me to be watched. Jonathan as always much appreciated for saving these old beauties and showing us all how to do the same. These are real cars, and will out last and out work anything made today and the proof is in this vid. Let one of today's cars sit that long and see if they respond like this...Hood shutting and saying...I am ready to do some WORK man. :D

Got the Chenard Walckler running nicely after its long long sleep. Brass or bronze carb is beautiful on it.

That's crazy. It runs so well you gotta do the crank. And it didn't look like much smoke at all.

It wanted to live! That's good old Iron for you Jonathan! Well worth the trip to pick her up. I think it would make an awesome old school Clampet Mobile. Find old cookware, gunny sacks, small wood barrels. All the types of things the Beverly Hillbillies had on their old truck, sans the rocking chair, unless you put it in the trunk. Cheers my Friend! I started a 15000 mile, 1961 Buick Electra (Not a 225) 401ci after it sat for 15 years, but I hand cranked the engine a couple of times, changed the Points, Plugs, Cap, Rotor, Wires, and Air Filter. I wasn't worried about anything living in the Exhaust, as half was missing, and the 401 would evict anything else. Once the Cooling system was flushed, Oil, and Filter Changed, Complete NEW Brakes, Wheel Bearings, Races, and Seals, it was time for a test drive. I didn't go far, as I was only running it on a one gallon gas can. It was like driving a Clunking Sofa... Only faster. Everything worked, except the Rochester 4V... It HALF worked... Even after sending it to a Carb Specialist. I couldn't buy an Aftermarket Carb for it in the late 70's... Anywhere. I had a hard time getting the Driveshaft Center Bearing. Once I did... It wasn't like driving a Clunking Sofa anymore. It was cool.

That car wants you to put it on the road again. Once you get that thrust bearing fixed it time for some tires and brake work. I really like what you can do with cars!

As I drive on I-79 here in PA., looking at about 10,000 different type Jeeps, including hundreds of Willys :) Jeep Fest was this weekend at the Jeep birthplace, Butler, PA :)

As someone mentioned in the other video comments, You should give that car to Noah, or let him work it off. And please don't let it become a rat shit rod. It's way too complete for that fate. I really enjoy your videos and perspective on life.

Did some checking and AC Delco part number U112 should get you new points, C345 a cap, and C429 a new rotor (1945 CJ2 with ICW series dist.). Standard Motor Products UC-14 or UC-14T is the coil listed for a 1930 Whippet and a 1929 Whippet Model 96A or 98A uses Champion 518 plugs. The old listing number for the plugs is Champion #W-18. Hope this helps....

Absolutely incredible that it just fires up! Almost like it's just back from a run to the shops and it's still hot!

The Whippet is saying "Fix Me Drive me". I do know Willys had insert bearings in 1933. '29 I don't know. The Willys - Knight registry has a ton of helpful information on all pre WW2 vehicles. They helped me with my '42 sedan.

Awesome video. I liked how you actually did work on it before attempting to start it, there are so many videos showing people putting a battery in some old junker and having it start right up after 40 or more years when we all know that is not going to happen without a whole lot of preparatory work like you did. Great old car.

I love it a man after my on heart the way I was brought up and had prayed off time after time,a real feel good experience, keep it up!

It started up, shut the hood by itself, and said "Let's go! It's been a long time since I've been out for a drive" About that thrust bearing,....wasn't there a line from a song that goes "Pour me another one, just like the other one"? I'm thinkin that the smoke out the tailpipe is lessening a bit already. It was nice to see something go smoothly for you. It's like when you always find something at the last place you look for it. You've learned how to right up front do that one more thing it takes to get it runnin.
