    This is a real find. Love these old trucks. Gonna give you a little tip I learned from the old timers... NEVER wrap your thumb around the crank handle. If it backfires, it will break your thumb or wrist. I learned the hard way.

    I find it incredible that it would even attempt to start.. it would be a truck worth restoring, even to a spec that looks like its been well used but still running.

    Well heck good effort. If you had a 2018 truck and tried this in 2118 i don't believe you would have anything left to work with left to the elements. One thing for sure, they don't build things to last like that, like they used to!

    If that old Mack kicks back with that gentleman cranking it that way he will eventually have a broken arm for his trouble. It happens when you wrap your thumb around the crank handle. It used to happen so often with Model T owners it became known as the Ford Fracture.

    Took a helluva man to drive truck in them days, hand cranks and arm-strong steering at no extra charge - or pay either. The AC Mack (which this one is) were nick-named Bull Dogs by the English soldiers in WWI and the name stuck. Thats why the Mack icon is an English Bull dog. Please do post more on the old horse. Best regards!

    Nice truck, looks great in its original clothes. She'll run, no doubt, seeing it fire up that easily. Don't forget, its not "built like a Mack", it is a Mack. I'll try to post my 1919 starting up which is nearly identical.

    Real antique, this one. When I was a boy, my father had a little Austin which sometimes had to be started with the crank handle. I never tried that myself. Nor do I look forward to it. I read somewhere that the self-starter was invented by Leland, who made the Caddilac, because one of his friends died while crank starting his car. The handle jumped back and hit him on the head.

  • @TheSupervincent

    @TheSupervincent

    9 жыл бұрын

    +Trytobefair historybuff there is a special technique for that for preventing that sort of things. the handle is really famous for braking your arm if it kicks back. to prevent that you may not keep turning like this guy does. you may not put your thumb over the handle, hold it like you're hanging off a cliff or something. then, pull it really hard upwards and release it.

  • @DAquingil

    @DAquingil

    @@TheSupervincent You’re right on target. I’ve got a Model T Ford that I crank start all the time, but I only use my left arm, and never wrap my thumb around it. First, retard the spark lever, then you hook four fingers over the handle at 7:00 and pull straight up, letting go at 12:00. If she doesn’t start, then do it again. Never follow the crank around in circles. One of the guys down here got whacked by his crank, and had to have tendons in his arm surgically reattached.

    I would love to have this Mack. All dents straightened out, very beautiful red paint with little bondo. I would definitely want pneumatic tires with a power steering box with air ride. The chain drive would be just fine. With a fully functional dump bed for meets. Probably some type truck tires. Low enough to carry nation wide on a low boy. Love this truck but to save it it needs a very good paint job.

    NEVER push the crank down! If the engine kicks back, you might get a broken thumb or arm! Instead, pull UP on the crank (preferably with your LEFT hand) and don't wrap your thumb around the crank handle, keep it on the same side of the handle as your fingers. Using your left hand and keeping your thumb with your fingers, you won't be injured if a kick back occurs.

    Im only familiar with old Regular, F12, F20, F30, Case... tractors, etc.. and many of the Model Ts As etc. EVERY ONE that I have ever seen has an anti kick back taper to the crank engagement /pins. This is.... if it kicks back, the hand crank automatically disengages.

  • @hyzercreek

    They started calling these Bulldogs because the headlights look like eyes and the side panels look like the droopy cheeks of a bulldog, and when the bumper is on in the front (not like this one) it looks like the lower jaw with overbite like a bulldog, which is why they calls Mack's bulldogs around this time. To this day, they put a bulldog on the hood.

Clearly you arm chair critics have never tried to start an old vehicle as found that has been sitting for decades. Just getting to the point this video was shot is a thrill and I am sure took hours.
