And they were custom made magnesium flares to get just the right level of light for Deakins and Mendes. I believe they made them themselves.

If Im totally honest. I kinda liked the music (this theme in particular) more than the movie itself. I rememeber being in agreement with my father in calling the movie something worth (for everyone) to watch at least once but not necessarily akin to a grand epic. (Which granted ... Is generally harder to accomplish as time moves further with every passing year)

Majestic and immersive piece. Feels so unreal but ruthless with the great war backstory. Masterpiece, the soundtracks and the movie itself. It's been so many days and I've watched the movie over again for 3 times, just so amazing, and the aftertaste definitely lingers me on. Especially that night scene when camera gradually moves out the broken window to Scofield walking down the lane, when flares rising and this soundtrack builds up..... cant really finds a word describing that feeling. Astoundingly majestic.

The dissonant/minor conclusion at 4:26 and following seems like the character realizes what it really is that he has been mesmerized by. The beauty and majesty of total destruction. The spirit of WWI triumphing over its many victims.

Me ... I think both were pretty good. No need to unreaonably punch down on some other artistic piece that was objectively just as lovely. Also ... If I would have to argue why. Well (1) Newman has already been long in the business. (2) The Joker soundtrack contains a larger variety of tunes while 1917 includes less variation. PS: Less variation does NOT take away from the fact that pieces like this one were really really good.

This was one of the saddest and breath-taking scene in that movie - imho - this track reminds me Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (one-movement work for string orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams.) - so similar and so perfect, so ... Devastating! In one letter, Private Albert Ford wrote to his wife, Edith, on a scrap piece of paper before going 'over the top'. "My darling if this should ever reach you it will be a sure sign that I am gone under and what will become of you and the chicks I do not know but there is one above that will see to you and not let you starve," he wrote: "You have been the best of wives and I loved you deeply, how much you will never know. "Dear heart, do think sometimes of me in the future when your grief has worn a bit, and the older children, I know won't forget me, and speak sometimes of me to the younger ones…" "Dearest, if the chance should come your way for you are young and good looking and should a good man give you an offer it would please me to think you would take it, not to grieve too much for me… "I should not have left you thus bringing suffering and poverty on a loving wife and children for which in time I hope you will forgive me. "So dear heart I will bid you all farewell hoping to meet you in the time to come if there is a hereafter. Know that my last thoughts were of you in the dugout or on the fire step my thoughts went out to you, the only one I ever loved, the one that made a man of me." Albert was killed in action on 26 October 1917. His last letter was treasured by Edith until her death. She never remarried and as she lay dying in February 1956 she said she could see Albert in the corner of her bedroom. War is horrible so lest not forgot about those brave Soldiers - God bless them

Thank you, but I prefer the natural ebb and flow of the original. If I want to extend it, I just play it again. But I'm sure we all thank you for your well done track. Amazing how the Joker soundtrack kept winning, when all that is is the woman's usual classical music dumped into a film. Newman did a great job of using a score to highlight key moments and enhance the drama of the film. That's what makes a great film score. 14 nominations and still no Oscar win. Wtf?

Who here saw this stunner of a film in a AMC Dolby Theater? Anyone other than me? I'm near the only one in Connecticut. And NY State has only five. Three of which are in NYC. 1917 is ahead of its time. The film was obviously made with the most advanced technology of sound and visual, which are fully utilized in a Dolby Cinema. I predict all theaters will one day be Dolby Cinemas or the equivalent.
