Looks like Fred Clark's 4th inning solo HR that tied the game 1-1.

I'd recommend that you read the first newspaper clipping instead of this comment because it's a lot more fun, but if you'd rather have simpler, more boring contemporary language, here goes. Game 1 of the World Series, the Tigers led 1-0 when Pirates player-manager Fred Clarke hit a home run for "four furlongs" (2640 feet, obviously an exaggeration) to "tie the tallies" at 1-1. The Pirates added 2 runs in the 5th and one in the 6th for a final score of 4-1. Charles "Babe" Adams shut out the Tigers ("held the Ganders safe") after allowing a run in the first, scored by Ty Cobb. According to the Meriam-Webster website, the second definition of "gander" as a noun (first being male goose) is "simpleton", so the writer is dissing the visiting team here. Cobb was robbed of a possible two run triple in the 7th inning by Tommy Leach. The clip is Clarke's home run. The second newspaper clipping describes Cobb stealing a base. Some who may be familiar with baseball lore may be wondering if this is describing the incident where Cobb yelled to Wagner "I'm coming down on the next pitch, Krauthead", then Wagner tagged Cobb out stealing, loosening a few teeth. On the play here, though, Cobb is safe, and, in fact, there's no real evidence that the "Krauthead" incident ever actually happened, in fact, Wagner seems to be one of the few guys Cobb actually liked.

Having grown up a Michigander, I believe the writer was going for brevity over insult.
