Here's the new Variable Waveform Generator from Sputnik Modular. It's a discrete Buchla style triangle core oscillator with individual waveshaping animations, sub oscillator, linear and exponential FM, hard sync and LFO mode.
In this video we take a look at 19 patches to break out of the basics with your oscillators, looking at more advanced patches that demonstrate a variety of synthesis/oscillator functions and look at adding dynamic animations to your sounds right at the core of the patch. While this video focuses on the Variable Waveform Generator specifically you can apply these patches to other oscillators and wave shapers, so give them a go and feel free to let us know in the comments what's working for you.

Some fantastic patches in this video! Really love the switchable drive on the Variable Waveform Generator, that one sounds really lovely.
Nice patches. Also many similarities to the PGH (Pittsburgh Modular) Primary Oscillator.

Haven't heard from sputnik for a while. It's good to know they are still active.
As an acid/detroit techno based musician, I've always been on the hunt for an oscillator that is capable of pushing SH-101 type sounds. Thanks for this amazingly helpful video. I found my missing piece as a result and I absolutely love it.

Modulating modulators is fun! I always run out of modulation sources like LFOs and CV mixers quickly.

Yeah more modulation (ochd and RND STEP the big things for me obviously) but more mixers! I feel like dotting small mixers around a system is a real power move for elevating patches.
Hard sync. Dammit Ben you cost me about $1100 today! I went to order the VWG, and ended up with that AND the Spectral Processor 🙄. Great tutorial!
Clever idea to “tune” the audio rate modulation signal to the voice’s octave or fifth. Similar principles as FM even if it’s not modulating frequency. HARD sync

Thanks for the video, some great ideas. But I don't think AM 'Synthesis' is a thing, just FM Synthesis and Amplitude Modulation. There's no synth like the DX7 building all its waveforms around AM.

Hello, it's definitely a thing although there's no obvious hardware synth design that builds upon in. Side note - The DX7 said it was FM synthesis but it was phase modulation for reference. We don't need to get into arguing semantics and wording ... main thing is enjoy your patching, synthesis and and music making. However my thoughts on it ... It's a bit like saying Karplus Strong isn't a synthesis method because there's no Karplus Strong based synth to historically base on it. Or that Waveguides aren't a synthesis method. They are, just lesser known and lesser used that subtractive or FM (or non FM but PM or PD Phase Distortion which the Casio CZ series did, different to Phase Modulation). Au contraire my friend it's definitely a thing. It's probably never been the core method of a synth because the timbral variety is not as great as other forms of synthesis.

Please consider going back to your old format! Divkid demos are by far the best out there! But the new graphics and camera angles, makes it unnecessary confusing imo.
