19.12.2019 - VN24 - Truck gets into oncoming traffic - fatal accident on B1 in Paderborn

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

VN24 - Paderborn / Germany - (ots) A serious traffic accident involving two trucks and a passenger car on the federal highway B1 caused two fatalities and one seriously injured person on Thursday morning. According to initial investigations by the police, the 56 year old driver of a 12 tonne truck drove from Bad Lippspringe towards the motorway A33 at around 09.55 a.m. Approximately 500 metres before the junction Schloß Neuhaus, he cross the double lane markings to the left and got into two lane of oncoming traffic for reasons as yet unknown. The truck collided first with a VW Golf which a 24-year-old was driving in the direction of Bad Lippspringe. The car skidded against an semi-trailer truck from Dortmund driving in the same direction, which was steered by a 55 year old male. The white 12-ton truck then also collided with the tractor trailer, causing the truck to break through the right-hand guard rail and come to a stop on the embankment there. All drivers suffered injuries, some of them extremely serious, and were trapped in their badly damaged vehicles. They had to be freed by the fire brigade. Emergency doctors and paramedics initiated resuscitation measures for two injured persons. Three rescue helicopters were requested. The driver of the white truck and the Golf driver died at the scene of the accident due to their injuries. The severely injured semi-trailer truck driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Paderborn. The police called in the public prosecutor's office, who commissioned an expert investigator. Numerous traces were secured at the scene of the accident. The police secured the vehicles. A crane truck had to be used to recover the semi-trailer truck. Work on the accident site continued into the evening hours. The damage to property is provisionally estimated at about 100,000 euros. The B1 was fully closed in both directions for the accident investigation and recovery measures.

    Why don’t the recovery operators try to pull a vehicle out in the reverse direction to the way it went in, rather than pulling sideways on a wheel, usually in a steeply sloping bit of ground? This seems unnatural but it is obviously the accepted technique. Why ?

    Instead of shouting and cursing at each other, like Americans love to do, here they work almost in silence. Everybody knows what and how. Yeah they broke a chain, so what.... The reason that they didn't disconnect, could be, that everything is too much damaged, that it's better to tow all in one. I've seen Towing companies from the US, where chains missing, or the Cable wouldn't enroll, or a heavely damaged steel cable....due to bad maintenance...!! Nooo.....then I rather go for the European way of recovery. Kompliment an dieser Firma, gutes Personal, und Fachgerecht gearbeitet..!!

    What happened to the legendary German efficiency ? . Wrong chains, tangled cables on the drums causing kinks. Using a cutting torch next to a possible damaged fuel tank, no extinguishers to hand. Absolutely no safety equipment, soft shoes, no helmets etc. Generally a very unsafe way of working, lucky not to have anyone injured with the snapped chain. Perhaps the operators would benefit from watching the Americans doing a similar job . Plaza Towing or Ron Pratt.

    you`re absolutely right... i live in germany and the recovery companies are very often outlaws. this land has a rule and law for every fart, but in these cases of recovery, its something like a fairy tale bubble where they can do what they want. look how the skinny man throws the lader on the ground to open it... ists the topping of the other things you wrote.

    The thing I found surprising was the LACK of an external "Load Spreading foot" under each of that Truck Mounted Cranes outriggers. The surface area of the basic outrigger foot is just there as an interconnect between the end of the ram and an external "load spreader pad". Especially since the edge of an asphalt road is often thinner and less compacted during its laying I would NOT have trusted the truck-mounted outrigger base pad not to have punched through the asphalt during the lift and cause the crane truck to tip over. Failures and crane rollovers due to inadequate Outrigger setup are well documented both in videos and press

    You have a good point about the railways taking the traffic load off the roads. At the start of the steam era, freight represented 75% of rail traffic. If the balance was restored, railways could be cost effective again. We need a whole new design of containers that are interchangeable between shipping, rail and road haulage. They should be capable of being divided, so that a large consignment could be distributed without the need for being unloaded.

  • @wilsjane

    @wilsjane

    Their were low bridges. I assume that they towed a short distance to where they were safely off the road to sort things out. The trailer load may have also needed to be removed. With drinks, even a few ruptured containers can soften the packaging, causing the load to collapse.

    616,300 views and no LIKES. I don't think this is any reflection on the poster - good video, But rather about the recovery it's self. Someone commented about the chain braking and said "so what". If that had hit somebody that would have been the scene of a double fatality.

    Obviously you have never done this sort of work? i have moved tractor units and trailers in worse condition ie chaining back axles into position chaining 2 out of 3 trailer axles up winching cabs forward to enable steering and towed them hundreds of miles to salvage yards with a old SCANIA twin boom wrecker but i don't approve of the way it was picked up!
