    I really liked your description of the harm of over-oilling. It seems intuitive to supply as much oil as possible, but your explanation really drove home the drawbacks.

    That is a beautiful clock with the wood used in the case and the painting on the glass and the curves and bald eagle on the plates. It was a special treat to see your woodworking shop - the table saw, the joiner, the planer, the band saw, the belt sander. You are a shining example of clock restoration as it ought to be done.

    Thanks Paul, I do what I can to replicate these old obsolete parts to the original dimensions, not perfect but will keep some of the dust from getting in where the movement is in from the top.

    So many great features on this clock Mr. James! What a beauty! The label on this clock is in such good condition! What a pleasure to look at it. The artwork, lettering, designs, nothing comes close to that today. A pleasure to watch your skilled hands and to listen to your knowledgeable commentary. I learn so much in every video. Thank you!

    @@davestelling Thanks Dave! I think these cases were made in the "Empire" style but I'm still learning about them. Frankly, I would be afraid to touch a clock like that. More than content just to watch! lol Take care!

    I agree, absolutely the best example of an intact label I have come across yet! Seems like they are all yellowed, since they were printed on high acid paper then placed on high acid wood, depending on moisture content of their environment some age better than others. This clock spent most of its life in the Palouse farming area of Washington State known for its prime dry soil farm land, so its been in a dry climate for most of its life.

    Mr. Martin: I have a 30 year old Hermle grandfather clock movement (from Klock Kit) that no longer keeps accurate time. It looses about four minutes a day. I have turned the rating nut so far up that it is hidden behind the pendulum bob and will turn no more. I know the movement needs cleaned, but I can’t afford it right now. Do you have any suggestions to improve the timing?

  • @jamesmartin5370

    @jamesmartin5370

    Tough to make a call without inspecting the movement. 1st I would see if you could get to the movement and determine if the pivots are worn in excess. While you are in there, oil them with some clock oil. Also oil the verge where it slides on the escape wheel teeth. This may help to reduce friction and speed it up. I've seen people use all sorts of ways to raise the pendulum bobs on these and it works but the source is a worn or dry movement. If it has excess pivot wear, gear teeth may be misaligned with the pinions, causing friction and slowing it down. Clock cases breathe in and out with changes of house air temperature. Full exhale is when a house is warm, air is completely exhaled from a clock case. Full inhale is when a house is cold, air is completely inhaled into a clock case. So in effect a clock sitting in a house has a continuous air exchange as the air around it heats up and cools down, hot air expands and cold air contracts. Over a period of a couple years, the volume of air exchange in a clock case is huge. And with all that air, there is huge amount of dirt and dust particles that eventually get deposited on the oil in the clock and will start to cause wear on the working parts. From time to time oil should to be replenished, every several years cleaning helps to prevent pivot hole wear. Let me know how it turns out...

    @@jamesmartin5370 Wow never really thought of a clock breathing before, but explains how dust particles can work their way into the movement.
