1882 SINGER Sewing Machine Restoration. Working after 140 years!!!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have long wanted to understand how a sewing machine works. And then, quite by accident, I stumbled upon an old rusty sewing machine at a flea market. The seller told me that it was made in the late 1940s or 50s, but due to the unusual shape of the base, I guessed that it was made much earlier.
Already at home, I studied a lot of material regarding this model of a sewing machine. As it turned out the name of the model "Singer 12K". The figure base is called "Fiddlebase", and according to information from the forums, it is now quite rare to find it on sale.
During the repair process, I found her serial number, and after checking on the official website of Singer sewing machines, I found out the year of her production - 1882.
Restoration process:
The disassembly phase was pretty easy. Then I sandblasted most of the parts in a sandblasting chamber.
All metal parts were then primed and painted.
Some parts of the sewing machine were lost or broken and I had to remake them.
In general, the work on the sewing machine required the maximum amount of patience from me and took about 14 days, so I will be grateful for feedback from you in the form of comments and "thumbs up"

I restored my grandmother's 1929 Singer treadle model 127 two years ago, it now works like a new machine, perfect stitching every time. Really just need a deep deep cleaning and proper adjustment. All of the components were still good. Singer made some damn good machines for mass production. Tolerances are amazing, performance is legendary. It's why people still fix these old beauties, they can still do exactly what they were made to do nearly, and over, a century ago. Nice work on this old fiddle base!

I don't do resotration for a living but I've restored a few dozen vintage sewing machines over the years. Recording every item you remove in order and showing the item clearly, as they do for restoration videos really helps. I don't post my videos but I started recording my work after being inspired by some restoration videos here on youtube. You even know exactly how each mechanism was engaged. If you're ever lost you can rewatch yourself take it apart. After some time and experience you need less and less because you'll get better. Also storing the parts in an organized way, like a lettered or numbered set of containers, as you pull it apart helps too. I always say out loud the number of the box the current part is going into. I use a bunch of tupperware with sharpie numbers on them.

Back in 1968, as a teenager I bought a used 1952 Singer, a fairly common one made in New Jersey. It is a work horse. Although I don't use it all that much, when I need it, I need it. A few years ago I bought a new cheap portable sewing machine because it had all the bells and whistles and to do some interesting things that my Singer can't do. But I can't get used to it, and there is no room to put heavy material between the needle and the machine. So I find I keep going back to my Singer. I have lovingly put a lot of time disassembling the machine, cleaning, greasing and oiling it, and in doing so realized this machine is a piece of art. Every piece is so well made, and the chrome pieces are like jewels. It represents what we were and where we came from. I like to be reminded of that. In comparison my newer machine is but a computer with a needle on it. I felt good to see you bring this beauty back.

I've waited a long time to see a video like this. I'm lucky to have a few of this model and have been cleaning them up as best I can with minimal dismantling. I haven't got anything like enough skills to go as far as you but this will get me a lot further along than I've managed so far. That reverse-threaded screw took me a lot longer than 30 minutes to figure out when I came up against the same problem you had. I still haven't found a service manual for these and don't know if they made one so this video is a huge help. Thank you.

The sewing machine looks amazing. Well done. My granny had an old singer sewing machine but it was on a special table and had a big ornate pedal you pushed up and down to work the machine. I loved the sound of it when my granny was using it. The electric ones are way faster but I still prefer the old manual ones ❤

You're right, the sound of old hand sewing machines is amazing. Electric sewing machines are certainly much more productive, but they have lost the magic that the old Singers have.

I just bought my first sewing machine, a Singer from ~1950. It's amazing how well it works and I'm happy I can do minor repairs and upkeep by myself. These machines really were made to last and I'm happy this one has a new life.

  • 3 ай бұрын

Good job! Well I lucked out yesterday and found an 1871 fiddlebase. It is dirty, but the decals are pretty good. The handle was broken off the wheel where it fits to the base, but that was done a long time ago. The handle will still stay in its place because of the pins on the broken end. You are fortunate that you know how to make the parts that are broken,. You are very talented!

This is so cool. I always enjoy watching Singer machines being restored. Isaac Singer was my Grandmother's great grand dad. So way up the family tree I was kin to the man who started all the Singer empire. Only bad thing about it, he forgot to leave me an inheritance.... lol...

@@ITBR_Restoration I don't know how significant it is but I used it for bragging rights when I get the chance. I've read that he was a very talented and creative man. I think those traits were passed down through to my grandmother and my Mom. They are both the most talented women. I have never found anything my Mom can't do. Awesome artist with any kind of medium you can think of. Musician and can play anything she touches. She has so many incredible things she has made over the years and everyone says her house looks like a museum. And here I am bragging again....

@@dannywilsher4165 He was a very talented man. The class 15 sewing machine system was directly his design from way back in 1866 just after he quit from the company. The oscillating shuttle was Singer's patent and found on the Singer Improved Family machines from 1879-1883 on the bobbin plate. That Machine ended up being what most machines are designed on, the class 15 and the needle for that machine is the standard needle used on domestic sewing machine to this day. I research Singer sewing machie from 1851-1900 plus and am published in ISMACS.

@@alibabafurball That's cool you researching Singer history. I have also and he was a pretty sharp man. I think the thing I liked most about him was the way he started the idea of letting women buy a machine on credit. I read he made lots of money by financing his machines.

140 years later this Singer sewing machine is nearly exactly the same as mine manufactured 100 years later. Except for some electricity and some fancy stitches I recognize all the moving parts. Amazing, but the old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” still rings true. Can’t wait to see how all the decals look after you get them back! Great job!!
