1871 Naumann Hand Crank Sewing Machine - Servicing and Repair with History - Antique

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I picked up this antique 1871 Naumann hand crank sewing machine at the auction last year and I decided to try to revive it. The machine also has some interesting history to go along with it.
A friend of mine donated some compatible needles and I discuss needle compatibility.
This video covers troubleshooting some of the problems I came across with it, servicing, bobbin winding, needles, threading and basic cleaning.
Detail of subjects covered can be found in the index below.

Thank you for showing all this. I just got a Kohler that has very similar construction. Ive been oiling and cleaning it and I found I missed a few spots.

What an amazingly quiet machine! Love how detailed you were in showing us how it worked, thank you so much! Taking off the back cover was so interesting, it is nice to get a good look inside and see how everything works. If I weren’t so far away I would certainly pop by to say hello at the quilt show in October. Hopefully you get to meet a few viewers. Thanks again for making this video, loved it!

I am working on a 1906 Defiance hand crank distributed by A.J. Harris of London. It isn't the first hand crank VS I've worked on. I have 20 or so hand cranks with different manufacturers from U.S., Germany, and England. Problem 1: I NOTICED the point of the shuttle is pin-point sharp. Unusually sharp point. Never seen one like that before. While I've completed regular steps of threading the upper leaf tension and threading the needle from left to right in a red color thread, The bobbin I wound with white thread and it sits nicely into the shuttle and the bobbin thread pulls up nicely. Manually, both the upper and bobbin threads pull away perfectly--with the tension I expected. Problem 2: after sewing a line, the (red) stitches on the top of the fabric are fine. However, there are NO bobbin threads on the bottom to make a lockstitch. Hmmmm? Right now, the only thing weird I've noticed is the point of the shuttle is pin-point sharp--so unlike other points on shuttles I have in my collection of machines. So, I ask if you--should I smooth (sand) the point slightly? Could there be a burr that I cannot see? Can you advise anything else I should do? Thank you for listening to my question. I have other VS to work on today, so for now I will set the 1906 Defiance aside. P.S. - on old sewing machine repairman shared with me his copy of a list of hundreds of s.m. brand names and models, with a column referencing the needle id, size, and substitutions. Would you like a copy of it?

Threading the shuttle the at the Blunt end of the shuttle is a tiny slot to pass the thread under the bar , mine needs the bar soldering it back in place.

This is by far the best video on yt for this make and type of machine. I have 2 Wertheims that are allmost identical, one wooorks the other not - not sure why yet. How would we go about adjusting a needle for these machines. Mine is an 1890's and Im assuming its a 12 x 1 needle, how do i replace these - yeah, I know theyre rare!

Nice vid to watch on a Saturday night: ) Looks very similar to a 12K, likely a high arm clone. I've got a very similar, but later Superba, German also but an English import. It's great to see them working again.

Hi Alex. I tried that but it still doesn't seem to go far enough to wind evenly so I moved it back in the meantime. Cheers.

I snapped my base. My similar machine "Faudels of London Handcrank Sewing Machine with Peacock decal which is probably HAID & NEU The thin wood base sat on an uneven surface "a leather strap of the machine below" Foolishly I tightened the front hold down screen and tightened the rear hinges. I actually heard it snap the casting on a warm day. I will repair the base soon. John

This maybe daft but would you try winding the bobbin using the hand wind in the opposite direction to sewing; that is what I have to do with my British Bradbury machine. I had the manual for it but missed the direction of the arrow printed on the documentation showing the picture of the hand wheel.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauge_block see the history section for the sewing machine connection. the Swedish inventor Carl Edvard Johansson 1901 Johansson converted his wife's Singer sewing machine to a grinding and lapping machine to make the blocks The blocks are optically flat and when twisted together to eliminate air pressure they stick together. We used to use them in our manufacturing inspection department.
