Mercia, the kingdom which grew out of the English Midlands, dominated England south of the Humber from the 620s until its final fall in the late 800s. It was a military and cultural powerhouse for much of that time, yet its origins are mysterious, even more mysterious than those of the other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. In this episode, we begin our look at the history of Mercia by considering its origins in the distant past of legend and using archaeological and literary analysis to chart its history up to its entry on the historical stage.

Your channel is simply amazing. Thank you so much 🙏❤
Awesome stuff, great quality, great info, nice podcasting voice and pace.
The sheer amount of research and effort it takes for you to produce one of these podcasts is considerable, I am overwhelmed! It also amazes me that there is so much material that survived, I know that sounds opposite to what we usually hear, but most of these people, in this case the murky histories of the Mercians, had a life span of perhaps 30-40 yrs? Some may have had 50, others perhaps barely 25, and yet we have names, threads of who they were Allie’s with, connections that across the expanse of centuries I wouldn’t expect to see survive, Bede or no Bede!
I love your in depth dive into this exact subject! Very rare and hard to find!
Who is the Witcher of Gloucester? And what are they known for? Where can I find more info on them?

The Hwicce were a small kingdom in the Gloucester area. They are somewhat mysterious, but there's a good book by Della Hook called 'The Anglo-Saxon landscape: The kingdom of the Hwicce' which is worth a look. I'm also planning on giving them their own episode in the future.
