18 | Sailing the Spectacular Islands of Fiji, Vanua Balavu and Makogai

We sailed Julia upwind to Fiji's remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu's Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves to explore. It is a dinghy sailing paradise.
After an overnight passage to the seldom visited island of Makogai, we toured an abandoned leprosy quarantine station and a giant clam hatchery. Fiji's natural beauty and welcoming people have impressed us at every encounter.
Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. She is constructed to the Ingrid design by William Atkin, and was launched in 1960.

Every cruising yacht should have a sailing/rowing dinghy. I have now retired from cruising any distance but still play with my clinker, gaff rigged loose footed, dinghy. I have seen larger motor yachts with rowing machines on deck and and think? Are you mad? Do you have no sense of adventure? Do youngsters aboard watch videos and miss out on the real world. Incidentally, my dinghy was once the tender to my father's old TSDY. I grew up with it and could not part with it when the motor yacht went. I am 72 , you can guess that this was not yesterday. Great video, I am so envious

So beautiful! So lovely sliding through the water so gracefully. Your wife is very attractive also but the boat is absolutely stunning. A sailing dinghy for exploring instead of a noisy inflatable zooming around disturbing the tranquility is my way of cruising. The subtle sounds a wooden boat makes is so much nicer than the squeaking of a fiberglass boat. Thank you very much for putting the time into making and sharing your trip.

You include video of the lovely Julia at anchor at each location, which shows admiration and respect to her. It’s like there are three of you on this voyage! You are wonderful photographers/video journalists too; perhaps the best of KZread sailors. It’s like watching a ‘National Geographic’ documentary film! Superb; simply superb! I’ve found myself worrying about you when you haven’t posted in a while. I would like to see more about Julia’s history, how you got her, and more about your dingy too; what design, what is she made of, did you build her, etc.?
