18 Levels of Hell (and some heaven): The Madou Daitian Temple, Tainan

The Madou Daitian Temple is an out of the way mythological theme park in Tainan City, Taiwan. Created in the 1980s, animatronic depictions of the 18 levels of Taoist Hell and Taoist Heaven are displayed in graphic detail. Triggered by motion sensors, sinners are sentenced by kings to their appropriate tortures while screaming for mercy in an endless loop. Local parents take their children to the temple to impress upon them the importance of living a virtuous life.
Filmed and edited by David Scott Kessler during a three-month residency at Absolute Space for the Arts in Tainan.

In Chinese societies, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, even Vietnam and Cambodia, where there are Chinese locals, and my country, Singapore, Chinese bring their Children to preview this kind of attraction. To educate the children; Oppress your parents and indulge in sins, you will have to answer in Hades.

Great video man, I hope that I could go there and experience myself someday. And to those that say that people shouldn't bring kids there, we were taught about this since we were very young by our parents so that we do not misbehave or carry out bad deeds. Almost all Taoist/Buddhist Chinese know about this from a very young age, so its not as bad as you think

Thank You! I hope you get to go one day too. The animatronics are weird and fun. Little kids are scared but I don't think it's so bad. In America we go to haunted houses where I've seen way more realistic violence. Most people just go here for fun too.

This is the truth on how you get away from hell. 1. God’s plan-peace and life. God loves you and wants you to experience the peace and life He offers. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16, NKJV). He has a plan for you. 2. Our problem-separation from God. By nature, we are all separated from God. The Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, NKJV). He is holy, but we are human and don’t measure up to His perfect standard. We are sinful, and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23, NKJV). 3. God’s remedy- the cross. God’s love bridges the separation between you and Him. When Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave, He paid the penalty for your sins. The Bible says, “‘He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed’” (1 Peter 2:24, NIV). 4. Our response- receive Christ. You cross the bridge into God’s family when you accept Christ’s free gift of salvation. The Bible says, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). To receive Christ, a person needs to do four things: • Admit that you are a sinner and you need the Savior. • Be willing to turn from your sins, and ask God to forgive you. • Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave. • Invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. Romans 10:13 says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Here’s a prayer you can pray to receive Christ: Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. I want to turn from my sins, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe He died for my sins and that You raised Him to life. I want Him to come into my heart and to take control of my life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as my Lord from this day forward. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Perhaps these 18 Levels of Hell in Asian folklore is justified. There's less crime in those countries. One American said: if in the middle of the night, there's someone chasing after you in Singapore, it's often to return your lost wallet! In New York, someone would stab you for the Nike you wear at night. Yanks are some of the brightest people in the world and they have so little control, powerless on these menaces, eg. with Los Angeles, a top city lined with drug addicts in tents, cardboard homes in some of the main streets.

  • @davidskessler

I see your point. I just wouldn't generalize Americans as having less self control. Americans live in a country with crippling minimum wage, highest education costs, unaffordable health insurance fueling an opioid epidemic and medical bankruptcy, highest wealth inequality, systematic racism, no mental help for people who need it most, and a broken undemocratic political system that only works for the rich and powerful. It's a recipe for crime. Obviously no place is perfect and there are places I would prefer to live in less but I think when discussing behavior it's important to look at the conditions that might be at the root of that behavior.

It's better if small children learn values through a tad bit of fear, since most kids won't understand even if you explain it to them in simpler terms. Showing them this gives them a clearer picture that evildoers suffer and good people are rewarded. My parents brought me to these kind of places when I was small so I kinda understand. Bringing them when they are teens won't be as effective anymore since they think more logically and probably laughs at all those weird moving mannequins. It's probably too late to hammer values in teens when they are going through puberty and their head are as hard as rock. We Asians have different ways of teaching values to kids, and by reading some of the comments, by looking at the way they reply, I assume most of them are westerners? Kinda new to Asian culture? Won't hurt to learn new stuff, am I right?

There's Hell too bro, but much worse because in Jesus world, the Hell is eternal. The Chinese hell, you will be released as soon as your karma is paid. If you have good karma, you can rest in heaven until the good karma is finished and then reincarnated back to the World. Or you can simply skip the heaven and reincarnated to World as rich or successful person.

How much do Christians , Protestant Christians and Reverted Christians understand what Jesus was saying in Matthew 11:11 ? Concern about John The Baptist Matthew 11:11 Truly , I say to you , among those born of women there has risen no one greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence , and men of violence take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John ; and if you are willing to accept it , he is Eli'jah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Do the above verses talk about Reincarnation ? Especially this words , " and if you are willing to accept it , he is Eli'jah who is to come. "
