18 Inexplicably Horrifying Junji Ito's Lovecraftian Monsters And Stories - Analyzed And Explored

Ойын-сауық

In the realm of horror manga, no one is more well-known than Junji Ito. He has garnered a sizable fan base since his debut in the late 1980s. Over the years, some of his biggest works have also been made into live-action films or dramas. Junji Ito was born in the prefecture of Gifu in 1963, and began writing comics in 1987. His first manga contribution was acknowledged with an honorable mention from the Kazuo Umezu Prize, and that was only the beginning. “Tomie”, a manga series about a supernatural girl/entity named Tomie, that was suitably terrifying, was one of his earlier works. Ito is the author of several notable works, including “Gyo”, “Uzumaki”, “Cat Diary: Yon and Muu”, and a few others. Many of his short stories have been included in a few anthologies. One such collection is “Fragments of Horror”, which was translated by Viz in the United States. “Tomie” and “Uzumaki”, for example, have been transformed into films and television programs.
Junji Ito has his own set of tricks and tropes that he enjoys using. Aside from the obvious ones like Cosmic horror, and unfathomable supernatural power, Ito employs a variety of additional ways to communicate his terror. Some are subtle, while others are more obvious. The audience is kept on edge by a combination of body horror, scary surroundings, and an overall sense of unease. He truly is a master of horror, and today we will look at some of his most bizarre and horrifying monsters of all time. Put your seatbelts on because you're in for one hell of a ride.

Ito did theorize it wasn't the woman who caused the house to become monstrous, but the previous inhabitants refused to let go of their sentimental nature to the house that became dangerous. Think about that, allowing the past to become the future.

I love how Junji Ito introduces this central idea and evolves it until it completely overwhelms and dominates the entire world of the story. It’s truly genius how he is able to conjure these absurd yet breathtaking images. Uzumaki for example, started with the image of a spiral of a snail’s shell and at the end of the manga, there was an entire spiral world underneath our own, and reading that was truly admirable

There is a lot of lovecraft elements in his work, so much so that many people say he copycat some aspects of his work. But I could fairly say that his work is not a copy cat of lovecraft but a love letter to him and he made it into his own style and flavor. After all greatness comes for previous predecessors shoulders.

Lovecraft was the father of existential / Cosmic horror, so of course Junji Ito's work resembles his. its impossible not to when you compare an example of a genre/subgenre to the works of the one who created said genre/subgenre. Lovecraft is interesting in that (If I recall correctly) he stated in his will that his work became Public domain so other writers could play with the world he created and continue it. It is because of this action we have so many Lovecraft inspired works the man opened up an entire literary universe for people to explore and expand upon. @@wacky-physics7506 The PUBG/Fortnite drama was more complicated than that... Bluehole games was using the Unreal Engine from Epic Games (makers of Fortnite). Their issue was that they were one of their most successful customers, were paying a load of royalties to Epic Games, were working CLOSELY with Epic around the development of the title, even before its release, and they were then releasing a direct competitor to them. Hurting their business and possibly using background knowledge they gained from working with Bluehole. It wasn't just a "Look! They're doing a BR game!" they took issues with. That was just what Epic Games made the story look like. I say this as someone who despises Bluehole. They honestly suck for what they did to that game.

alot of his stories are very interesting. It's a shame that he mostly makes short stories because almost all of his short horror stories would be interesting if it was longer and we can deep dive more to the story. Alot of his short story endings are rushed. It's like counting up to 20 and when you reach 10, you straight up go to the number 20. I think one of his short stories with the most perfect ending is The bully. Literally gave me chills than the supernatural, lovecraftian stuff that he makes because the bully's story actually happens in real life.

Because the people are more of set pieces, his stories are spectacle driven not character driven. Why do you think the characters are drawn nondescript. No flashy clothes, no fruit colored hair, no particular quirk. The forces within the plot don't revolve around the "protagonists" and work independently such as the concept of Spirals, a planet devouring being, a human shape size hole in the mountain. Heck even the so called recurring "characters" are acts more like spectacles rather than characters to drive the plot.

just because theyre scary doesnt make them lovecraftian... really the only lovecraftian shit junji has done was amigara fault, hellstar remina, uzumaki, and the thing that drifted ashore. what makes them lovecraftian is that the origins of such creatures or events cant be explained and even at the end you dont know what it is or what caused it.

Lovecraftian horror is existential. It is the dread, and helplessness you feel in the face of something outside of understanding. You are right that remina, uzumaki and amigara fault being lovecraftian, but for the wrong reasons. Remina is an unstoppable inevitability, uzumaki cannot be stopped, and amigara fault forces people to enter their "hole." They are all unstoppable forces outside of human understanding, which is why they are lovecraftian.

@@user-rl4tg2mr9n is that honestly not the same thing though? what i said goes right along the lines of what you were describing, the fear of the unknown. “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” in hellstar remina we know that its a planet eating organism but from where? you never know. in the thing that drifted ashore we know its a deep sea creature and how it survived, but from where and why did such a creature go undetected for so long? we never know. in amigara fault we get background info that they were carved hundreds of thousands of years prior but for what? why? how did they know the dimensions of people in the future? we never know. you were right about helplessness though, it is the same helplessness that is apparent throughout many of hp lovecrafts novels. the inability for our tiny minds to even understand what we are seeing. “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”

Murdered in a car accident 19:05? That is quite a contradictory cause of death as murder and accident are generally mutually exclusive unless a murder is disguised as an accident in which case no one should publicly be aware of it.
