18 HOURS in theory! IN REALITY? Aachen to Glasgow on coaches, train and flights.

After travelling with Flixtrain from Berlin to Aachen, I was left with the dilemma of getting back to Glasgow. I would travel via Brussels Midi, Charleroi and Edinburgh using various options including Flixbus and Flibco. On paper the journey 'should' take 18 hours, but how long did it really take?

    I guess once you're on the platform of a train station at night with nothing else to do you can't pretend you're doing anything else except "travelling", so it kind of starts then, even if he's stuck waiting.

    I would say that scot never failed, as I think he started the timer too early, it should have started at 23:30 especially since when he started the timer he was not on the correct platform, had he started by the main departure boards he easily could have started the time later.

    @@cdog252 Or taken the very regular 73 bus from Driescher Gässchen. However, that would not have made any difference to his arrival in Edinburgh, nor added to the sense of tension at the beginning of his challenge. However, he could have started the clock much later by taking the bus thus delivering his belated arrival within time.

    Aachen West may be two trainstops away from the main station, but it isn't any farther from the city center, the train just circles around the center. On the other hand Aachen West is much eaiser to reach with a coach from the motorway.

    Its a 10 minute bus ride from Aachen to Aachen West Station so no need to wait half a hour on a freezing cold platform in the middle of the night. Also Flixbus stations are often at the edges of city centres to avoid the potential delays by getting caught in traffic. If you need to get off the highway, rush hour traffic in, pick up/drop off passengers and go back to the highway that adds a lot of time to the journey

    RB stop at every station, so you can be assured it stops in Aachen-West (and every other station it passes). RE might skip some stations, but I believe on this line, that means it skips Aachen-Schanz and Kohlscheid, not Aachen-West and Herzogenrath. But honestly, you could walk to West, it's not that far out of the city, from the city centre, about as far as Hbf, actually (of course depending on where in the city centre). The shortest walking route from Hbf brushes the Aachen Cathedral somewhere in the middle, and is about 2.3 km. There's also a big university campus right next to West.

    Hi Scott, a very enjoyable video, and the idea of a stop watch challenge is a great one for videos. But curious why you chose that 18 hour time range, as you were in the airport for what looks like 7 or 8 hours. Is the objective to avoid an overnight hotel cost as well, which I can understand in itself. From the video it would seem you were booked on a Ryanair flight from Charleroi which presumably was timetabled for around 14:00 hrs out of Charleroi. So essentially you could have also made it something like a 10 hour challenge and still using buses from Aachen to Charleroi via Brussels, or even a train to Brussels and even on to Charleroi and still arrive in Charleroi before 12 noon. Given the time you spent at the airport, would this video not more accurately be described as a challenge on the reliability of the Ryanair flight schedule and the connecting bus from Edinburgh to Glasgow? Keep up the good work though!

  • @PlanesTrainsEverything

    @PlanesTrainsEverything

    Hi Sean, the Ryanair flight was leaving (from memory) around 10-10:30am, so I had to work backwards from there. The Flixbus I caught from Aachen would have been the only service giving me time to connect Brussels Midi-Charleroi while allowing 3 hours at the airport. I hadn't checked in at that point, and based on previous experiences at CRL, when security had been a nightmare, I wanted to give myself a comfortable amount of time. I also had to catch the last train from Aachen to Aachen West to connect with Flixbus to Brussels. You were right to say it was down to reliability, but if one leg had been cancelled or seriously delayed, the whole challenge would have failed much earlier. I'm glad you enjoyed the adventure, and glad it wasn't obvious in the video how nervous I was. Empty stations, dark streets and remote bus stops. All part of the fun!
