Even better, in a way, is that, I was hit by a car (driver texting while driving) back in July, and it took me four months to get my functional coherence back and another two to get my short term memory restored. I still have to catch up on your videos from last season that you uploaded before the accident, and if memory and looking at your upload wall serves, that's anything that started with your Miami videos all the way to your Keys finale. Which means I have something to look forward to, beyond the fresh new vids.

Sorry to hear about your accident! glad that you are recovering. The 2016 season actually starts in Tampa with 17-06. (17-01 is unused footage from SF, 17-02 is 13-31 from LA Remixed and 17-03 to 05 are from Atlanta).
2 things... 1. Your choice of music is impeccable!! I've been following you for 7+ years, and I've watched many other freeway channels, but I always end up back here!!! 2. That horn at the 3:07 mark had me in stitches!!! 🤣🤣

Thank you very much and I agree with you regarding the construction, plus when filming/photographing construction projects like these, you capture something that was only in its particular stage for a short time.
Good to see you filming once again. I haven't been in B'ham for about 6 years and wow lots of construction! Definitely needs the upgrades.
Great video to start off a great new season! Love the new effects such as the VMS and the horn. :)
I travel 65N and south everyday and it’s quite possibly the worst freeway section in Alabama. It’s bumpy, full of holes and the speeds average anywhere from 35 to 125mph at any given time. It’s a true test of your patience. Love the content man, fantastic channel. We have parties and just loop your videos on the television.

Glad you're going to be making some more videos, Jim. Love your driving adventures, and the production quality of your videos is superb. Look forward to your next set. BTW, hope you'll make it back over here to Houston sometime soon. To make it worth your while to cruise the not-so-expressways of the GHA, there are at least enough Whataburgers that you can't swing a dead cat around and not hit one. :-) Safe travels!

Nothing like a fresh new FWJ video to go with my morning coffee. I've never been on that stretch of I-65 south of Birmingham, so that was cool to see. When I took a trip from Athens, GA to D.C. last spring we made a point to stop at Whataburger as well.

Phew... I have an addiction. My addiction is new FWJ video. Just got my first "fix" in months! So I'm sitting here, trying to conjure up a few memories of Birmingham from decades ago, and NOTHING is jumping out at me. Must have been the antiquated freeways in the '80s. Looking forward to the next one, Jim. Maybe it'll help shake loose at least one old memory. 😆
@Freewayjim
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah it was a different scene in the 80's although what we call antiquated was relatively new to Birmingham, lol.
Alabama is the first state in the Road Atlasses in which I learned (as a 6 year old) about America and its topography, and therefore has an extra attraction to me. I'm right away going to check the 2011 video's, looking forward to what's coming! Malfunction Junction is so special because it is so unique. There are a few other ones in the USA but I guess none in Europe. I love it's efficient design. The commuters of Birmingham won't agree with me on this one, but I feel a little bit of loss here.
@pointlesssentience3987

H Hoef / HvH Well I won’t say it’s efficient, but it’s certainly uncommon and unique (compared to the stack that they are going to replace it with)

Pointless Sentience that’s sad that malfunction Junction is leaving 😱😥 that was my favorite interchange in Birmingham. That’s part of what put them on the map as being unique.

Actually, they aren't replacing it with a stack. Several on and off ramps are being added and deleted. Accesses to and from 20/59 and 65 are being modified---by the time it's all said and done it will resemble an octopus. www.5920bridge.com

Just rewatching this after driving to Birmingham and taking the same route. You should come back out here soon. I think they did a great job with the I-20/I-59 replacement including all the new flyovers and stacks. Didn't expect I-65 to be like a washboard or what I-10 use to be near Slidell before they turned it to asphalt.

Yes, I would like to get back there.
RE: your comments about Birmingham being late to the game in getting its Interstates completed...blame it on George Wallace. In the 60's and 70's, he never carried Jefferson County. To get back at the people of the Birmingham area, he focused on getting freeways completed in counties (mainly rural ones) that supported him. One of the saddest TV interviews I remember was in 1984 when I-459 was (finally) completed. He appeared on one of the local newscasts, vowing and declaring that he had done everything he could to expedite the completion of Birmingham's Interstates. Truth be told, it wasn't until 1985 or '86 that I-65 was completed north of Birmingham (Exit 265 to Exit 281) or that I-20 was completed (Exit 132 to Exit 140).
@Freewayjim
6 жыл бұрын
Interesting stuff, however, he did expedite the completion of I-20 east of Birmingham as a means to woo the France family of NASCAR to build a big race track at Talladega, that was originally set to be built in Spartanburg, SC so he could get things done when he "wanted" to.
@CC21560
6 жыл бұрын
It helped that Wallace carried St. Clair and Talladega Counties. :)

Awesome, simply outstanding! Your music selection made the ride very energetic, as in your prior videos, this one lacks nothing, you deliver just what your fans look for and want! I guess with increase in population, DOT is trying to improve and keep up on the roadway demands in order to relieve congestion, but they aren't doing the job fast enough. I stumbled across these videos, and I'm glad I did. Outstanding (GVJ)!!

And your choice is perfect, I watch your videos at least three times to experience what you see and detect anything I might have missed in the prior viewings, one thing I am assuming, your previous profession must have been a tractor trailer driver, because you handle the roadways too perfect, (3:07) when that car just suddenly appeared , and merged in front of you, your expertise took over and you completely avoided an accident. Great job as always!!!

I love Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham is my second most favorite city behind Atlanta. But a good video would be from Vulcan Park through UAB through Five Points South through downtown to I-20/59. I believe it’s 20th Street Street that takes you all the way through. Another good video would be from I-65 north of Bham through the new I-22 interchange to malfunction junction then head east through downtown on 20/59 then head south on 280 freeway then follow 31 to Hoover from where 280 splits off.
Welcome back Jim. Nice video. Look forward to many more in 2018.

I'm late to the game here, but great stuff here. The interchange work looks like it's going to be a great product when finished. Sadly, I still haven't been to Birmingham yet, one of the last major American cities I have yet to visit. Would love to drive around the place, as the hilly terrain makes the place pretty fun to drive around (at least from what I've gathered from this and your other Birmingham videos). Cheers!

The Malfunction Junction interchange of Birmingham eventually provides access to 11th Avenue commuters with a choice of taking northbound I-65, southwestbound I-20/I-59 and southbound I-65 while leaving downtown. It also goes vice versa and leads drivers to downtown connecting to 17th Street. That's an amazing improvement or upgrade of that interchange.

I rode through the new I-22 Interchange on I-65 a couple times, they did a good job with that.
I rode through Bham the other day and they've made tremendous progress. I was taken aback by the huge scale of the construction. You should consider going back before they shut down I 20
That was fun! Great soundtrack as well. Is I-20 actually losing one of its Malfunction Junctions?

Incredibly, Malfunction Junction won't be rebuilt anytime soon. What you see under construction there now is additional access to downtown streets, built partly for its own sake and partly in preparation for the demolition and reconstruction of the I-20-59 viaducts between I-65 and US 280- Red Mountain Expressway.

Thank YOU for watching!
Birmingham has a severe interstate problem...Not only is it outdated, but it is EXTREMELY congested...The amount or volume of traffic that flows through the city is AGONIZING at times...3 lanes northbound and 3 lanes southbound on I-65 is RIDICULOUS....Too congested, no room to pass the other car, and the surface of the roads are bumpy and uneven.....I-459 is a race track...might as well call I-459 the NEW TALLEDEGA 500....I live in Atlanta, where traffic there is a nightmare, but people drive way too fast on I-459 for no reason at all....Geesh, I thought I-285 was bad in Atlanta, but 459 in Birmingham is the Autobahn..... Birmingham seriously needs to add more lanes east and west I-20 through the city, and definitely more lanes north and south I-65 through the city.....That is all....
Thats right the highway master is back! 😁😁😁😁😍

Let’s see...... West Coast Whataburgers are very easy to find..... Whataburgers as I know are in Arizona, California, Colorado, and Nevada . I don’t recall seeing any in Utah but I bet there’s a few there.
There's nothing wrong with traveling for a Whataburger :-) That said, at least a mid sized city, like Birmingham, has improvement projects going on, and a good amount of 6 to 8 lane sections, unlike my hometown of Pittsburgh.
You should drive the freeways in savannah it’s a sight to see especially heading to the st George area

Whataburger is great! Although if you want what us Alabamians (especially us from Birmingham) eat on the regular, then you must eat at Jack's! No better burger place in the south! I personally think it even gives The Varsity a run for it's money. I'm a little biased though lol.
