There were good reasons why there was a revolution but the some aspects of the outcome weren't what some people might have liked. Whatever his faults, Stalin built up the economy of his country and managed to overcome a much fouler regime in 1943-45. Unfortunately he did stuff afterwards that were shall we say "superfluous" and still causing trouble today (the partition of Korea).

The Romanovs were much better than the Bolsheviks, that's for sure! But the whole question is probably moot -- as things stand, Russia will probably be ruled by the House of Putin!

One of my father's friends is a distant relative of the Ruriks, but she is probably not the next in line for succession -- she is not closely related to Nicholas II or any of the other murdered members of the Russian royal family, or even to the house of Romanov (as shown by her last name, which is Rurikova and not Romanova). And I also doubt that she would want to give up her American citizenship to be crowned as Russia's queen. But I'm sure there are many other relatives of the Romanovs and the Ruriks who are scattered throughout the world, either in Russia or in other countries!

I just remembered -- one of Solzhenitsyn's many cellmates was a trucker, Victor Novikov (?), who was in fact closely related to the house of Romanov. But he probably died in the gulags, because I haven't seen any mention of him anywhere else.

I love these old Russian Imperial Marches. Most of them belong to Imperial Regiments with long and brilliant histories - all of whom were dissolved after 1918.. The fact that Tsar Valimir Putin has decided to resurrect some of the names of the old Imperial Regiments does not give them the history.

I'm monarchist. The monarchy kept my country ( Brazil) united and prevented the fragmentation in several republics . It was a period in our history marked by respect to the constitution , poltical stability and democracy. The republican period, since 1889 only brougth us instability and corruption. So I salute the Russian tsarist like other monarchies.

So he inspired awe, or fear, in people. In Russian 'Grozny' can be used positively and negatively. I have a feeling Ivan liked it that way. It kpt people on their toes around him.

at this point the russians would be better off with a tsar back on the throne: they already have an absolute ruler, but this one has pissed off half the world. also no security when he dies, it'll be a grab for power. despite the fact that monarchies are mostly ceremonial nowadays, they do open doors and can facilitate and strengthen diplomatic bonds. also a sense of stability with heirs who should theoretically be groomed for the position.

The German Eagle was black but had only one head. it only appeared after the formation of the German Empire in 1871. The Austrian and Russian eagles were very similar, both with two heads, a small crown on each head with a larger one between. They both claimed to have inherited it along with the title of 'New Rome' from the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire respectively

I believe the Semenovsky Regiment was formed under the auspices of Peter the Great, same as the Preobrazhensky Regiment. If memory serves me right, the Preobrazhenskys wer supposed to be tall, fair-haired Russians and the Semenovskys were to be dark haired and dark eyed Russians. If I am mistaken in this, someone please correct me. The music for both regiments is stirring and exciting. Were either or both of these regiments involved in actual combat with Soviet Forces, or are they ceremonial?

@monkeypoo3000 The main reason for that is that they didn´t preper for a war as large and long as ww1 and istead focused on a much smaller war(they didn´t spend that much money on the military as the germans did)and people actually starved all over Europe because of the war. Don´t forget that the Russian Empire did have access to some impressive technology like the first 4 engine bomber the Ilya Muromets.

@Chandersson25 Most reckon it would have been a great power by 1930 without any of the gulags. One of the reasons Germany attacked Russia in 1914 was because her Generals calculated she would be too powerful for Germany to fight after 1919. Bismarck understood the potential power of Russia so peace with her was absolutely essential for Germany.
