175€ vs. 2000€ trench coat: what’s good quality outerwear? | Vintage Burberry, Barbour, COS

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video compares trench coats: vintage Burberry, vintage Barbour wax jacket and COS. It's about what makes good quality outerwear, from a price tag of €175 to €2000. I talk about fabrics, construction, where the brands saved money and the luxury details that make a difference in the price... and what to look for in order to buy good quality when you're shopping outerwear.

I bought my Burberry in DC 31 years ago for $1,500. I wear it throughout spring and fall and some days in-between. It has been cleaned countless times and no longer sheds rain quite as well, but it shows almost no signs of wear. At this rate, they'll be able to bury me in it!

I worked with a woman who, when she graduated from University in the 1970s, received a Burberry trench coat from her father. She still wore it when she retired in 2015. It looked great. So when my daughter graduated from University in 2018, I bought her a Burberry trench coat. I am a dressmaker, and I am very happy to know that any time a button gets loose, she takes it to the store and it is repaired for free. We are both happy with the investment.

I have a London Fog trench coat with a zip in lining for colder weather from around the same era. Has a touch of the big shoulder pad look but not so over the top Dynasty looking that it's too bad. Not nearly as stylish and upscale as your Burberry, but well made and still in use some 40 years later. My son loves it and is always trying to "borrow" it from me.

The thrift shops in Paris and Amsterdam still carry designer labels at affordable prices and, often, they are helping charities. I got a couple of gorgeous cashmere coats in Amsterdam, about five years ago, for maybe 50 euros each. I always google the second-hand shops, when I go on holiday, and devote a couple of leisurely days to them. it is really useful to learn the reason behind why some aspects are better quality, and how they affect the garment. You cannot always find a garment where everything is impeccable so it is good to be able to judge what aspects of quality will be most important to prioritise for you. for example if an issue is mostly aesthetic or if it will make the whole thing fall apart.

Nice video! I’m a fellow designer and just wanted to make a correction on one statement - the small buttons on the inside of the Burberry coat are not to cover the thread only. The main purpose of this button is to add stability to the front button so it doesn’t “flop”. It’s a common technique used in outerwear making (mainly) where larger and heavier buttons are used and they need to lay even against the fabric.

I have had a Barbour for the last 40 years and it has worn very well and will outlive me. I had a chance to buy some ex-Burberry trench fabric a few years ago and passed it up because it wasn't quite the right colour, so I am kicking myself now! I also like checking out RTW, usually tut-tut-tutting and the usually poor construction of womenswear. I am so glad I sew, I could not afford to buy the finished garments I make for myself. I heard Queen Elizabeth loves her old Barbour jackets so much she gets them refurbished and repaired front time to time. I love the waxed jackets because they breathe and repell water. They have to be rewaxed and one needs to purchase the tin of wax. I wore one out. I have found some from LL Bean and Eddie Bauer in the US. I also have seen them in Orvis catalogs . And with the quality and durability, I know this is my last trenchcoat/raincoat I will need to buy! I live in Missouri, U.S. and we have a lot of “middle” weather, and I wanted to look nice during these times of the year. It was indulgent, for sure. I really love how details these reviews are! So informative! But the prices of Burberry aren’t just cause of the finishing/COO etc. They’re more than anything a product of the status of the brand as a luxury brand. It didn’t cost Burberry 20 times the price to produce their trench coats compared to Cos but they charge 20 times more! I think Barbour is the best option as they specialise in outerwear and they’re not positioned as a luxury brand. If you don’t have access to second hand luxury brands cause not everyone does! X

One small detail to add: the small inner buttons on the burberry coat are not just for optical reasons. Brands across all ends of the economic spectrum do this. Search for DW fast fashion, they investigated the fast fashion industry. The most shocking thing to me was the amount of clothing H&M/Zara etc make that go directly to a land fill… brand new clothes never sold never worn… directly to the land fill. I don’t know what’s worse LV/ Burberry destroying old stock or H&M/ Zara doing the same??? It’s all about controlling the market and planned obsolescence a business practice that goes back to the 1920s Almost every manufacturer of any product you can think of is guilty of this, from clothes computers ,cars, appliances. To me the biggest difference between a Burberry coat vs a H&M coat is… the chances of the Burberry coat going to a landfill post consumer purchase is exponentially lower due to perceived value. In fact, before I buy any “luxury” product I check the used resale market prices. By doing so I can estimate my projected loss or gain after wearing the item for a few years. Some items I have lost a little money on some items I have made really good money. What matters most is that the item didn’t go to a land fill and it’s service life continues with a new owner.

It’s an amazing piece of clothing, the comfort level is just great. The pockets are huge, they hold so much and never look bulky. The small details like the hook on the front, the gun flap, the neck strap... everything was designed for the military and is still very useful and cool today. Years ago I went shopping with the intention of buying a Burberry trench for work. I also tried on a Nippon trench which was every bit as nice and had a beautiful zip out wool lining. At that time, it was a nicer trench all the way around. It came down to price and the privilege of paying a premium for the signature Burberry lining. I bought the Nippon-it was a great trench.

There is a small shop called Da Vinci on Sanjyo street in Kyoto close to Teramachi street. They used to supply fabrics to Burberry Gucci etc. They make very nice trench coats with variety of colors with a fraction of the price of Burberry. If u ever visit Kyoto I would recommend to visit the shop

I'd be interested to see if the new Burberry is constructed as well as the vintage. I would definitely buy either vintage option if they were available in my size

I appreciate so much your detailed evaluation. I’m in the process if buying a vintage piece. Thank you!!!
