Gdynia (Kashubian Gdiniô, German Gdingen, 1939-1945 Gotenhafen) is a port city in Poland in the Gdansk Bay. It forms the metropolitan region of Trójmiasto (Tri-City) in the Pomeranian Voivodeship with the larger Gdansk (Gdańsk) and the smaller Sopot (Sopot). First documented as the settlement of Gdina in 1253, Gdynia was granted city status in 1926 and subsequently developed into the most important port city of the Second Polish Republic. Gdynia was a village until 1918. The Versailles Peace Treaty gave Poland access to the Baltic Sea through the Polish Corridor, but it did not have its own port. Therefore, Gdynia was systematically developed into one of the largest trade, emigration, war and fishing ports. The townscape of Gdynia is characterized by many modernist buildings due to the strong development of the city from the 1920s. In the 1930s it developed into a large city with over 100,000 inhabitants. During World War II, the German occupiers renamed it Gotenhafen. As an important base of the German navy, it was considerably destroyed by British and U.S. air raids. Today, Gdynia ranks twelfth among Poland's largest cities with a population of around 250,000. The invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 marked the beginning of World War II. The Germans expelled an estimated 50,000 Poles immediately after taking the city in October 1939. 12,000 to 13,000 inhabitants, mostly members of the Polish intelligentsia, were shot in the so-called Intelligenzaktion not far from the town, including the Piaśnica massacre. In 1944, the mass graves were reopened and the bodies were burned to remove the traces. With air support from the US Army Air Forces, the Red Army captured the city. Hitler had previously declared Danzig and Gotenhafen to be fortresses, which were thus to be defended "to the end". In the fighting for this fortress area, 39,000 German and 31,000 Soviet soldiers were killed. Before the final withdrawal of German troops, all port facilities were destroyed by demolition squads. The battleship Gneisenau was sunk in the harbor entrance as a block ship. The harbor was usable again from July 1945. The surviving displaced Poles flocked back to the city, and Poles from the territories annexed by the Soviet Union after the Yalta Conference moved to the city as new citizens.

@@emre2642 3/4 of these lands were ethnically polish, taken from crown of poland in 1772, 1793 and 1795. Katowice was taken by Prussia from habsburg empire in mid XVIII, formely was a slavic village, it was not a city up untill II half of xix ( 2nd indrustal revolution) - mind you most of the workes there were poles or silesians, so slavic ppl. Capital was mostly german allright. Thouse terrains remained polish/slavic despite aggresive germanisation campagins at the end of xix c. (Kulturkampf). Gdansk, subject of polish crown, was free city from 1772 to 1793 and again from 1807 to 1815. Clearly in defiance of kingdom of Prussia. Posen as you called it is Poznań - ancient polish city and a center of poland from X century. For centuries it was the most developed and most western part of polish kingdom, and by any means germanic territory - btw the forced germanisation process was the stongest in greater poland, but with out any significant success. Warmia and Mazury are ancient Prus terrotory, conquerd by teutonic orderz exploited by tge knoghts and later secularised and germanised in a sense of language and clutural influence. That took centuries trough. So what are you trying to say?

Only when he discovered about the confirmation of British and French ’guarantees’ to Poland and official Polish choice to stick to them he ordered the Fall Weiß. His plan was simple : Poland together with Germany against the Stalin Soviet Union. That plan would succeed if Poland have had choose the right side. French and British did every effort not to let it happen. As a result Poland has been crushed from both sides (Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact).

@@dexitjetzt8247 You are projecting modern ethnic states to times, when both Poland and Germany, expecialy Prussia ware massively multiethnic. It was cappuccino vs Caffe latte situation. Do you know that Bismarck speak perfectly Polish and was very angry when someone pointed that it is inappropriate? Erwin Romel was escaping allies pretending to be he's Polish cousin Rómel also a general? However it das not change the fact that by the ethnicity Gdiniô was Kashubian, then settled also by Poles.

@@dexitjetzt8247 these lands were inhabited by Kashubians, only Danzing was initially slavic settlement. Vistula delta were initially inhabited by slavs, possibly scandinavians and much later baltic prussians. The later geminised prussian lands were on the right bank of vistula, not on the left. Now Gdansk for 8 centuries was affilated with polish crown, despite speaking german or dutch from XIV c onward. The nationalism of XIX c. Made it a german city, but not sooner as it was always antiprussian (meaning definig policy of Prussia). Even now, what was rebulid reminds more of dutch or dannish old town than a germanic prussian one. In fact the ruins of prussian style oart of Gdańak were puprpousley not rebuild but replaced with social modernism style bulidings in 1950s. Which is a shame, but again the main Gdańsk artery would be just ridicousely narrow that way.
