Kathryn Wilson I think you mean you are paid in 12 increments. Just because you get 12 pay checks does not mean you are paid for 12 months. The 10 months you work are just divided equally into 12 paychecks.

I would love that. I teach middle and high, but when I was substituting with kindergarten I LOVED doing storytelling with them. I taught temporary for special ed kindergarten and it's so fun t ol make exaggerated expressions while you are telling a story, and see all the kids mirror you.

We thankfully get paid in the summer...some of our money is held throughout the school year and we get it in the summer which is helpful. In the past I have taught summer school which yes, is a good option. I’ve also worked in daycare as a supply early childhood educator and I ended up working everyday. I have looked into VIPKid and have to submit my video for the interview but I would have to be extremely disciplined to be a part of that...waking up early in the summer will be a huge challenge for me. Lol! I totally forgot about summer camp as an option to make money...I use to do that back in the day when I was going to school. Yes, being a nanny is a good option too. We also can mark standardized tests and it’s really good money, but our union frowns upon that. Owl hooter? Hmmm...I’ll look into that. 😂

I did a similar video a while back with ideas for side hustles for teachers. Personally, I tutor online in the summer because I prefer to work with high school students, but I have friends who do VIP Kid or Dada and love it. There are so many unique ways to make money...selling platelets...dressing up as a party princess...being a ref or umpire.

Great list of ideas! In Wisconsin, we get paid through the summer, thank goodness! So sorry you have to deal with the August “gap.” 🤦🏼‍♀️ Ugh! I know direct-selling gets a bad rap, understandably so - “normal” people, too often, can turn super-weird and pushy, but teachers being great communicators, helpers, and natural leaders can really build an awesome side income this way, too, and still keep their friends. Yes! It’s true! 😂 I gathered up a squad of moms, teachers, and other go-getters to build a now 4-year side biz that funds family stuff, bills, travel, and my school loans. A 2nd paycheck every month talking about products you use/love is a great gig and “working” in pajamas is just extra. ❤️ It’s been a fabulous experience, and I plan to keep that going for sure as I also build out a blog and TPT products. 🥰 I’m a true-believer in multiple streams of income no matter what a person does, but especially teachers. Have a great summer! ☀️

We have a ten month contract with a 12 month pay cycle, but we're always short. This summer I'm: teaching summer school for the month of June, participating in the state test question committee in July (which is paid because I'm out of contract time), and working 17-20ish hours a week at OfficeMax (I do 10 hours during the school year, I take a lot of time off during the summer though to do the committee work or just have a life) During the school year, I get a couple stipends for dept. chair and clubs and I get hourly pay 2 times a week for watching late bus kids or curriculum work.

However, they didn’t/don’t have a position for me in my content area for next year! I have a signed contract for next year but basically have to make it for three months with no pay. I am just finishing up school, and we'll be doing student teaching in the fall. While I was going to school and also a full-time single mom, I had two side gigs that I hope to be able to continue when I'm working as a teacher. The first one is I work for an un- armed security company at a local University. There are opportunities for us to work on weekends and evenings at College events and all kind of sports activities. The second is that I work for a company that placees exchange students with families here in the US. I worked with two students from China, and I'm paid pretty well for each student that I supervised. They are not actually in my home, but this is a really flexible job that I will be able to continue once I'm teaching. You conduct home visits occasionally which can be done on your schedule.

If you teach the class, you receive $1.00 more for showing up on time. If you teach a total of 45 classes in a month, you get an additional dollar. This means that each class you teach, you earn $9. This equals $18 an hour. If the class is booked short notice meaning within a 24 hour window, you will get $2.00 extra. The best thing is that you can teach as much or as little as you want.

I hope you find enough down time to relax and stop the frenetic state of being for just a little bit. I have 10 or so weeks of non-school time each year, but in Australia it is standard to have four weeks of paid annual leave. That leaves us with 6 weeks that are technically unpaid. The remainder of our salaries are spread over 12 months. Voila...we get paid all year long. I cannot imagine not getting a pay for a whole month. It just seems wrong to me, and that's a lot of money to just not be there. My holiday self says it would be easier to just save a designated amount each month to make up for the month of no pay. But saving money is my secret super power, so that feels like the simplest option to me. I know not everyone operates the same way. I sincerely hope that whatever you do to fill your financial bucket is also something that fills your emotional bucket as well.

I agree!! Teachers anywhere else in the world seem to be paid over the summer, even though they don’t work. And I think, seeing how stressful and draining on so many levels a teaching job is, they deserve the extra break AND be paid at the same time. Meghan said she’s struggling to pay her bills like... what is wrong with this system!!

Christ Follower it seems unfair to me. In Europe you 5weeks paid vacation in any job, nursery through kindergarten teachers get 6 and elementary and up get 9 weeks. They deserve being paid for their break seeing the emotional stress, the noise levels, the physical aspect (tall teachers, small chairs in preschool for ex.) in my opinion. :)

  • @HoneybeeAdventures

Christ Follower well being a teacher of 14 years you would know we actually work during our vacation and work well outside of our paid hours. Marking and lesson planning happens outside of the classroom. Those holidays are paid annual leave which legally in Europe we are entitled to. In fact regardless of the profession everyone has a minimum of 4 weeks annual paid leave.

I used to work at a summer camp for gifted and talented kids- lots of fun. There are teaching positions, but also admin and counselors. Sites are all over the country and there is one in Hong Kong. Probably too late for this year, but check it out for next year: cty.jhu.edu/summer/

In NC I was making $35,000 a year before taxes and I was supporting myself and my fiancée while she was attending school. How is that livable? (I lived in a city where a 1 bedroom tiny apartment was $1200 a month not including water/electric/WiFi) my take home pay was about $2,000 a month. Add on car payments, gas, food, basic necessities, prescriptions, etc... there’s not much left

@@meaghanam1 , I agree with you with regard to North Carolina. They, Oklahoma, and Arizona don't pay their teachers enough. However, most states do. Georgia pays its teachers considerably more than North Carolina. I taught in Georgia for fourteen years. It was enough to live on so my wife didn't have to work outside the home.

@@mrhaider6343 , it depends where you are. I made $56,000 per year in Georgia. After taxes, insurance, retirement, etc., my take home was about $36,000 per year. That was enough for me and my family to live on in the suburbs of Atlanta. Sure, we had to be frugal, but we were able to do it, and take trips, too.
