I cruised to Alaska on Holland America last month. No excursions. We walked around the towns and enjoyed some museums and local pubs and a little shopping. We had an inside cabin. We were in our cabin only to sleep or rest. We enjoyed the views from public parts of the ship. We saved a lot of money and had a wonderful time.

We took two cruises to Alaska last year…so beautiful! The weather was great for both of them and they were both shoulder cruises! One in May and one in September. The Skagway train is a must! The lumber Jack show…eh, could have lived without it but maybe for a first time ok. We hired a private tour in Juneau and it was quite lovely and places off the main itinerary grid. Thanks Tanner! 😊

I actually like dreary cool weather so when I went on my first Alaskan cruise last September the weather suited me just fine.

I love cruising to Alaska at the end of the season. There are less people on the ship and whatever the weather it’s still so beautiful. Going on my 3 rd trip in September from SF on the Ruby Princess.

I took my first cruise to Alaska on carnival miracle from SF last August and I must say that it was wonderful! The only Excursion we did was seeing the Mendenhall glacier. My favorite ports were juneuax and Skagway, but I did not enjoy the actual cruise ship. It was so boring i lost 4lbs on my cruise because all i enjoyed to do was walk the track. I'm doing another non Alaskan cruise in February on Crown Princess so we'll see how that goes

You were NOT kidding about SOME cruise lines charging Much more than others…we are sailing on RCL’s Ovation on a Glacier cruise out of Seattle in June…When we were first pricing cruises, we originally wanted to try the Disney Wonder out of Vancouver…They were charging $8000 for two people in a balcony cabin; The Same itinerary (actually, a better one!) for the same class cabin on Royal Caribbean was LESS THAN ONE THIRD THE COST ($2400 for two in a balcony) For the same week!!

Get the Alaska Milepost! Although geared to road-system travel, it includes some marine travel info and info about your ports of call. It also includes a HUGE fold-out map of the state. I have not decided if I will pack the whole book (it is thick & heavy, although a paperback)) or will tear out the info I think I will need,. Well worth the price and a great souvenir of your trip! Regarding the ports of call - it tells you everything, not just what other cruisers or 'experts' think you might want to see. It includes sections on the Inside Passage and the White Pass & Yukon RR (I have done it and will do it again on my upcoming Alaska cruise.) No, I have NO monetary connection to the Milepost or any advertised vendors - I have been using it for years - even while visiting and traveling with a sister who lived in Anchorage. IMHO, a must have for any Alaska trip.

We will be on an Uncruise Adventure Cruise in May. No ports or WIFI. Only 43 cabins with kayaking and hiking everyday. We will be doing a helicopter-glacier tour before we embark. (Alaska is just as expensive as Hawaii because most everything must be flown in.) This is retirement!

It should be noted the cruise lines with the most experience in Alaska and most likely to go the the premier glacier sights are Princess and Holland America; their ships have less indoor activities, i.e. no bumper cars or skating rinks, more classic cruise and education focused, than the largest ships owned by Royal Carribean and Norwegian.

Tanner, it’s strange that you didn’t mention that Alaska cruises also sail from Vancouver, even offering one way options in addition to round-trip ones from Seattle. Viewers should be aware of this.

I cruised around 20 cruises. Alaska was a big disappointment after having been to Norway. Nothing beats Norway, makes Alaska look like a cute little place to visit. The other thing about Alaska is the weather, I did shoulder season, cruising the end of September, which is a big mistake. Clouds and rain with the order of the day most every day. If you haven’t done Norway do Norway, put Alaska to shame.
