$169 LED Knockoff better than the Wescott FLEX?
Фильм және анимация
In the world of flexible LED lighting, is it possible for a $169 LED light to compete with a $2700 one?
Flexible LED's are useful for their weight, size and ease of use. Today Griffin tests the Westcott Flex Cine (1x2') ($2700), the Fositan FL 1x2' ($169) and the Falcon Eyes RX-18T ($229) to see if the cheap Flex LED's have any chance against a full featured Westcott.
He tests the lights for 3 different categories: brightness, high speed flicker and color. Which one is the best value? Watch to find out!

Suggestion: Cheap Wireless Mics (less than $100, $100-500, $500-$800) vs. Expensive Wireless Mics ($800+)

This is a great suggestion

I'm sure there is a difference... but probably not a $500 difference!
@seablaede

@@broaderFOCUS It can depend a bit, the problem isn't so much when using one or two mics, often times a lot of the more expensive comes down to coordinating multiple channels of wireless. Things like antenna distribution, quality of RF filtering, etc. make more of a difference there. You do get some differences when talking analog companders vs digital signals, but that applies cheap or expensive as there are cheap digital mics as well these days. Also you can look at some aspects such as latency that don't make as much of a difference in filming as they do live.

When on the subject of sound, off camera sound is an option with multiple performers. Smaller Zoom, Tascam, Olympus, and related products are able to capture up to 24 bit 96K sample sound in stereo or more for post production. For outdoor film with just speech, some of the personal audio recorders produce excellent sound with a decent mic. Even some cell phones are used as field recorders. Best to put those in airplane mode. Way too many youtube videos are interrupted by a text message. Many cheap wireless mics have poor frequency response and an ever present background hiss of poor S/N ratio.

$500-$800 is expensive! $300 mic plus $300 boom mic has covered my needs as a freelancer.
The price of the Wescott is ridiculous. Good comparison video!
finally!! I think that everyone is very happy to see you again Griffin and see that you have not lost "the touch" to communicate what is best for us!

It’s nice seeing this cannel with people that seem to care about it again
I've been using the Falcon Eyes Bi-color mats (18's and 2x2) for a couple years now. They've traveled, been smashed, in the rain and totally abused. Only thing that starts to fail is some of the fabric stitching but who cares. Totally love them and so versatile. Mine don't exhibit any green/magenta shift. May be some QC issues with different batches coming from the factory which wouldn't be surprising. Nice thing about Amazon is you can just return them and get another if the color isn't spot on.
Great comparison! I love my Neewer NL-660 kit. I got 3 Bi-color LED panels with stands, power cords, and cases for only $290. They're plenty bright for most use and also take power off Sony NP-F batteries which has been a lifesaver on so many jobs!
I missed you guys! Nice to have you back!
wow i missed this channel i watched this channel as a kid and loved everybit of it i cant believe that was almost ten years ago bring back bfx!
Thank you for this. The wescott is perfect for lighting my kitchen, but i haven't pulled the trigger due to price. So its really nice to know about these other options. Currently light set up is a genaray spectroled and and wescott Ice light. The ice light is nice as I often throw it behind my stove to create a nice natural lighting when I'm cooking. But a flat light can be tapped to the wall which is a bit more ideal for me.
Glad you're back, Buddy.
I like that you included some other models for comparison too!
Im currently in love with my Luxli's , RGB 's , remote control , built in effects and gels . It's awesome for the price too !
Wow-this ratio won't last, but right now it's 374 likes to 0 dislikes. Thank you!

Hey Griffin, I enjoyed the video, but you missed one thing that's very important. The tint. Cheaper lights very often have a green or magenta tint which is a big deal if you want consistent and accurate colour. You briefly mentioned it but would have liked to see an accurate test / visual comparison.

This is EXACTLY the video I needed! I'm looking at new LED lights on a budget, and then this popped up in my notifications. 10 years later and Indy Mogul is still helping my shoots where I need it most, my wallet!
This video is about a year old and I just came across it. Learned a lot had a lot of fun. I actually am an old video guy who is getting back into things and used to use tungsten lights if you remember those.I also have some cheaper LEDs that don't change lights and I thought hey why don't I just throw a gel and I'm like we would have done anyway. I love these new lights they're so much lighter than the old Arri gets me to drag around from shoot to shoot. Looking forward to seeing more from IndyMogul I love this channel years ago when I was starting out and now that I'm back into it I'm revisiting relearning and engaging. Looking forward to all that comes :-)
Thank you. This is the video that I need. I recommend the best video.

This was the first 'cheap vs expensive' comparison video that I've liked. I'd like to see more where there's the expensive vs cheap but then a slightly more expensive than cheapest option. Having these 3 points of data, and not just using a price point exactly in the middle, allows us to really see the differences in the premium vs cheap quality curve. Thank you!!

This was excellent. Don't own a flex light, but I like the large surface area of the light. Never paid attention because I thought they were too expensive, but you have offered some good options. thanks for doing this!
Thanks for sharing the video, very educational!
That intro was BOSS!!!!!!

Awesome vid. Thank you for posting!
I was wincing at the flat LED prices I had seen doing some research and was looking for some alternatives, Thanks for the review,
Very nice video content! I learned something today.
Great video! I have been looking at getting a few flexible LED panels and the Fositans are much cheaper than the ones I found for the same features. Thanks again Griffin!

Really awesome video 👏
I was nervous you were going to pick the expensive thing at first. We use the bi-color falcon eyes - it's about $600 - and highly recommend that one.
Thank you. That was very, very helpful.
Griffin! Hells yea.. The other crew are awesome.. but for years you were the face of Indy Mogul for me. So.. yes the other guys are great.. just good to see you back on as well in whatever capacity you are here.

Awesome comparison! We've been looking for a replacement for our softbox kit because the colour is essentially green, and the boxes are too darn big! Cheers Griffin 😃👍
Another great video Griffin.... thank you! Can you suggest LED modeling lights for photo strobes? It would be great (and cheap) to use my current lights and modifiers.
This was fantastic! Thanks for the review. How about cob led lights like the 120d/sl-60w for a different review?
If video doesn't work out for you, you can do voiceovers your voice is awesome much like a radio host voice. Love this vid thanks for the ideas.
Was the flicker tested for at full brightness? Because of the way these LED lights are controlled, they will usually be fine at max output, but some beging to downright strobe once you start dimming them.
@SirRelith
5 жыл бұрын
Would be nice to see what they are like at lowest brightness and high frame rate.
I’ve used the Wescott lighting and the cheapo LEDs and the biggest drawback for me on the cheap LEDs is the low CRI. They throw a green spike that is very unflattering. You can use a 1/4 magenta (minus green) gel to help that but it’s never perfect. But still, $2,000 vs $200? I can live with a little green if I absolutely need a flexible fabric light.
Suggestion: soft boxes and fluid heads!
Must test the CRI of each light to see how effective each will be when high quality light is demanded.
Great finds. I've bookmarked the Fositan and Falcon Eyes lights for future reference. By the way, the links in the description for the Fositan and Falcon Eyes go to Wescott lights instead.
Your falcon eyes link goes to a $2,999 westcott kit, btw. Thanks for the video! Great info.
Wtf!! Griffin is back on Indy Mogul!!
Such timeless test ! Next smart thing to do : buy some cut Westcott baggies, cut them and velcro the Wescott name on the back of ur Fositans. Make ur crew happy again.
Good LED light comparison

Cheap thang vs Expensive thang : SD Cards
You should also check out the Menik flex panels! I bought both the 102A and the 68A (and the addt'l softboxes). They're affordable, have good CRI and TLCI, surprisingly punchy, and are super useful when you need to squeeze a light in a weird spot or need something to run off v-mount. I use them on commercials and shorts quiet often.
Falconeyes makes the rgb lights as well. The 18TD rgb is 700 which is not cheap but still 1/4th of the price of the westcot.

and then there's the bicolor for like $280. I've been using the 24tdx (150W bi-color) for a year now and love it - amazing light for my editing space as well.
The mainstream light makers are so primitive. Huge adapters, boxes to lug around, way over prices. The end is coming for these guys if they don't get their act together.
I have the same Falcon Eye RX18. Its great! You can get a bicolor version though. But as with every bi-color light system its probably not going to be as bright as if it was only daylight or tungsten only
Hi Griffin, Once again, another great video. May I please ask you what was the name of the light meter attachment for your iPhone? Maybe a link to Amazon or B&H through your site? Thanks, Terme
(Aliexpressing as i'm watching) there seems to be a Falcon Eyes RGB at ~€600
Trying to figure out how bright these lights are compared to ones I have. Any idea how their brightness compares to the Neewer CN216 or CN 304? Thanks!
Suggestion: Cheap Tube-lights vs. Expensive Tube lights! There's a lot of options out there, both bi-color and RGBW, and they're very popular these days..! Quasar / Andromeda / Voyager / Yongnuo
Very helpful. Definitely can't afford most expensive.
Next, can you test example, two 120d vs one 300d. Which is brighter, thnx. Love your show
Whats the cri values? Great video. Thank you
@SirRelith
5 жыл бұрын
I think I heard that the CRI for the FOSITAN was like 90, and the Falcon Eyes was 92 or something. Not sure, but my impression is that the CRI is good enough considering their price.
It would of be also useful if you talked about the difference in power usage & how it would be helpful to not have to plug AC
Love the video, but your links are switched around. The Fositan and Falcon eyes are showing the links to wescott, and vice versa. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Thank you for all your hard work!
I see a lot of people comparing the Godox sl 60 and 150w against the aputure 120d. There's also a similar falcon eyes light but these lights hardly have any reviews on Amazon. I'd like to see a test like this for those lights!
I agree, the westcotts are amazing lights (yes, I’ve used them quite a bit, but only because others I’ve worked with already owned them), but the price is soooo over the top! Even at half that price, it’s ridiculous. You can buy several Travor lights or falcon eyes for the price of one westcott panel! FWIW, there are other westcott options, including straight daylight only, but even those are ridiculously priced.
Very nice :D
Would've been nice to test portability. You mentioned how you travel with the westcott lights, can you travel as well with the cheap alternatives?
There is also a falcon eyes that does RGB for around 600 - 700 dollars.
PS: Looks like several of amazon links are mixed up :-/ Great review!
Instant subscribe.
It would have been cool to show What kind of light package you could create from the $2k+ buying the cheap lights and how bright it is when you have 3 cheap lights together on each of your 3 point lighting setup. Crazy.
you should do the same thing for the apurture 120d and the neewer lights that are like $150 or $350
Not too shabby...
I got 3 Fotisans courtesy of this vid! **would LOVE any wisdom on how to mount them best for flexibility (like a lot of us I'm looking to go Peter Hurley on these things). Thanks!
You should do cheap on camera monitors vs. expensive ones. Like an alternative to Small HD or something in the likes

Fositan's here I come! Heads up: Those product links are incorrect. The westcott links are the cheapies, the cheapie links are the westcotts!
Search for Travor FL-3060A for the bi-colour version of the Fositan (I believe Travor is the manufacturer and there are many rebranded versions). The brightness output is the same as the single colour and only a little more expensive so a no brainer.
Looks like your amazon links in the description are switched up. Westscott / Fositan.
